The Committee to Protect Journalists have today published their annual\u00a0list of states<\/a>\u00a0where the murders of journalists are likely to go unpunished.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Here\u2019s the top 10 as of 2014:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 1. Iraq <\/p>\n The worst, then, is Iraq \u2014 a country the UK recently spent over six years occupying. The 6th worst is Afghanistan \u2014 a country the UK has been occupying for well over ten years.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n You might think that a British newspaper would be interested in focusing on these countries, perhaps in the context of asking just what kind of \u2018nations\u2019 British armed forces have helped \u2018build\u2019 there over the past decade.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n These figures don\u2019t exactly chime with the pro-war narrative of Iraq and Afghanistan being transformed into flourishing, peaceful democracies, after all.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n But no. Here\u2019s the first two paragraphs from the commentary accompanying The Guardian\u2019s datablog about the report (emphasis mine):<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2018Syria<\/strong>\u00a0has joined a list \u2014 compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists \u2014 of countries where journalists\u2019 murders are most likely to go unpunished.<\/p>\n The 2014 Impunity Index, published today by the committee, shows that\u00a0Syria<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 which topped the world\u2019s most dangerous country for journalists index \u2014 has been ranked the fifth worst country for where journalists\u2019 murders are most likely to go unpunished. The CPJ say that\u00a0Syria\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>appearance on the list \u201chighlights the rising number of targeted killings\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n <\/p>\n And here is their concluding sentence:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2018Syria<\/strong>, which was named by the CPJ as the world\u2019s most dangerous country for journalists, has joined the list for the first time this year\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n <\/p>\n
