{"id":113032,"date":"2014-04-16T18:15:15","date_gmt":"2014-04-16T18:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=113032"},"modified":"2014-04-16T18:15:15","modified_gmt":"2014-04-16T18:15:15","slug":"nations-boldest-gmo-label-law-nears-passage-vermont","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/nations-boldest-gmo-label-law-nears-passage-vermont\/","title":{"rendered":"Nation&#8217;s Boldest GMO Label Law Nears Passage in Vermont"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Senators credit &#8217;emails and calls&#8217; of voters for pushing legislation<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Lauren McCauley<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rinf.com\">RINF Alternative News<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After a groundswell of support from state residents fueled by grassroots activism, Vermont is on track to become the first state to require the labeling of food that contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs).<\/p>\n<p>A bill making its way through the Vermont legislature won preliminary approval on Tuesday when the Senate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.vt.us\/database\/status\/rcdetail.cfm?Session=2014&amp;RollCallID=763\">voted 26-2<\/a>\u00a0in favor. On Wednesday, the legislation goes before the House, which previously passed a slightly different version of the bill. Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin said he&#8217;s likely to sign the bill should it reach his desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a victory for everyone who eats,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vpirg.org\/news\/vermont-senate-approves-gmo-labeling-bill\/\">said<\/a>\u00a0Andrea Stander, Director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ruralvermont.org\/\">Rural Vermont.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cIt is fitting that Vermont, where we take food seriously, is on the way to becoming the first state in the U.S. to require that genetically engineered foods be labeled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.vt.us\/docs\/2014\/bills\/intro\/H-112.pdf\">Bill H.112<\/a>\u00a0requires that food sold in Vermont stores that contains genetically modified ingredients will be labeled starting July 2016.<\/p>\n<p>During the vote, legislators acknowledged that it was the rallying cry of their constituents that pushed them to back the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Burlington Free Press\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.burlingtonfreepress.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2014\/04\/15\/vermont-senate-votes-26-2-for-gmo-labeling\/7739819\/\">reports:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some senators who had been skeptical of GMO labeling said they were persuaded that their constituents want the information clarified on the food they buy. Senators said they were flooded with emails and calls from people urging them to pass the bill.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Bobby Starr, D-Essex\/Orleans, chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said he, too, had been unenthusiastic about GMO labeling, but at every public meeting he heard from Vermonters who wanted a labeling law. \u201cLo and behold, GMOs would float to the top of the debate within those meetings,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cToday the Senate stood up for the vast majority of Vermonters who want to see genetically engineered foods labeled,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vpirg.org\/news\/vermont-senate-approves-gmo-labeling-bill\/\">said<\/a>\u00a0Vermont PIRG Consumer Protection Advocate Falko Schilling. \u201cVermont is once again leading the nation by acknowledging the important fact that everyone has a right to know what they are eating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other New England states,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headline\/2013\/04\/24-6\">Maine<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headline\/2013\/06\/04-3\">\u00a0Connecticut<\/a>, which passed labeling laws that delay implementation until neighboring states sign on\u2013in an effort to share the cost of a potential suit\u2013the Vermont bill will immediately become law.<\/p>\n<p>If and when the law passes, most assume that a lawsuit by large business interests would be inevitable.
