This is one of those stories where you realize the conflict between what is right, and what is profitable, is just too great in our society.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Hardy has taken on and beaten cancer, but is nows fighting a viral infection he developed after a recent bone-marrow transplant His family turned to social media to pressure pharmaceutical maker Chimerix into providing the antiviral drug brincidofovir, which could well save his young life.<\/p>\n<p>The company has already turned down multiple requests by Josh\u2019s doctors for the unapproved drug, and thousands of requests made by friends, family members, and other supporters have failed to shift the companies position on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur son will die without this drug,\u201d said the boy\u2019s father, Todd Hardy. \u201cWe\u2019re begging them to give it to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Kenneth Moch, CEO of Chimerix said that the company\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/10\/health\/cohen-josh\/index.html?hpt=hp_c2\">cannot agree<\/a>\u00a0to provide the drug, because it would then be obligated to share the drug with other patients \u2014 and according to Moch, that would simply cost too much.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf this were just one patient wanting this drug, then this would be a very different question,\u201d Moch said. \u201cBut it\u2019s yes to all or no to all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have great compassion for this family, but this is not just about a single boy,\u201d said Moch, who admits he would feel \u201chorrible\u201d if Josh dies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A medical ethicist, in a statement to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2014\/03\/11\/company-withholds-experimental-drug-from-dying-7-year-old-boy-to-preserve-profits\/\">Raw Story<\/a>, said he understands both viewpoints.
