{"id":107882,"date":"2014-02-13T23:55:17","date_gmt":"2014-02-13T23:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theorganicprepper.ca\/?p=864"},"modified":"2014-02-13T23:55:17","modified_gmt":"2014-02-13T23:55:17","slug":"what-to-eat-when-the-power-goes-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/editorials\/what-to-eat-when-the-power-goes-out\/","title":{"rendered":"What to Eat When the Power Goes Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/pad1.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/a\/a4\/Candles-in-the-dark.jpg\/550px-Candles-in-the-dark.jpg\" width=\"440\" height=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the power goes out, my kids tend to think it&#8217;s party time. \u00a0They like it because it means that we are definitely going to play some games, do some arts and crafts, and eat some food we don&#8217;t normally indulge in.<\/p>\n<p>Of course we have back-up cooking methods for heating food when the electricity goes out, We became accustomed to it, since it happens with relative frequency, but in our old house in the city it wasn&#8217;t so easy. \u00a0Still, in the summer, we don&#8217;t want to fire up the woodstove and during a storm, we don&#8217;t want to stand outside in the rain cooking on the barbecue. \u00a0So, during a short term power outage, it makes life easier in many cases to eat things that don&#8217;t require much in the way of preparation. \u00a0We have specific preps for this situation that require no cooking. \u00a0It&#8217;s probably the only time we regularly consume food that hasn&#8217;t been made from scratch, so for the girls, it&#8217;s a bit of a treat.<\/p>\n<p>I like to keep the refrigerator door closed so it depends on the expected length of the outage whether or not we take things from there. \u00a0If we do get items from the refrigerator, I plan it out so I can quickly grab all the things and then close the door again, to help maintain the temperature.<\/p>\n<p>At our cabin, the pump goes out when the power goes out, so we have no running water. \u00a0(I rent so this is not something I can upgrade at this time.) \u00a0To circumvent a few difficulties, we stock up on disposable goods to use during power outages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Styrofoam plates<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Paper towels and napkins<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Plastic cutlery<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Baby wipes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Disinfecting wipes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Plastic cups<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In our cupboard, most of the following items are the organic version. \u00a0Some exceptions are graham crackers and saltines, which\u00a0can&#8217;t be found organic in our rural area. \u00a0(I avoid purchasing non-organic items that contain<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theorganicprepper.ca\/killer-corn-12212012\" > corn<\/a>, even for the &#8220;Lights Out&#8221; stockpile, since nearly all corn grown in North America is genetically modified.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Graham crackers with peanut butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Crackers with home canned cheese sauce<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Saltines with peanut butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Fresh fruit (apples, oranges, bananas)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Canned juice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Trail mix<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Dry cereal<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Cereal with milk<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Canned baked beans with ham<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Pretzels<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Nuts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0Pudding cups<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Canned fruit<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Jerky<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Pouches of pre-cooked and seasoned rice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Cookies<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Granola bars<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Crackers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Dried Fruits: apricot, mango, banana, raisins, cranberries, pineapple<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Sandwiches: Peanut butter and jelly, tuna, leftovers from the fridge, Nutella<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following are some &#8220;recipes&#8221; for power outage food. \u00a0Okay, &#8220;recipe&#8221; is a stretch &#8211; perhaps just some &#8220;tasty combinations&#8221;. \u00a0:)<\/p>\n<h4>No-Power Nachos<\/h4>\n<p>Layer organic tortilla chips with canned cheese sauce, salsa, and canned\u00a0jalepenos<\/p>\n<h4>&#8216;Smores<\/h4>\n<p>Top graham crackers with Nutella (or other chocolate-nut spread) and marshmallow fluff<\/p>\n<h4>Wraps<\/h4>\n<p>Soft tortillas filled with canned meat, a touch of mustard or mayo, and veggies from the fridge<\/p>\n<h4>No-cook Soft Tacos<\/h4>\n<p>Soft tortillas with canned meat (we use our home canned chicken or taco meat for this), salsa, and canned cheese sauce<\/p>\n<h4>Main Dish Tuna Salad<\/h4>\n<p>Combine a can of tuna, a can of white beans, chopped onion, chopped peppers and chopped black olives (veggies are optional). \u00a0Top with Italian dressing mixed with dijon mustard to taste.<\/p>\n<h4>Pudding cones<\/h4>\n<p>Drain canned fruit of choice and stir it into vanilla pudding. \u00a0Serve in ice cream cones for a kid-friendly treat.
