{"id":105710,"date":"2014-01-14T11:04:20","date_gmt":"2014-01-14T11:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/only-a-fool-still-believes-the-nsa\/"},"modified":"2014-01-14T11:04:20","modified_gmt":"2014-01-14T11:04:20","slug":"only-a-fool-still-believes-the-nsa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/only-a-fool-still-believes-the-nsa\/","title":{"rendered":"Only a FOOL Still Believes the NSA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- START CONTENT --><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2014\/01\/fool-believes-nsa.html\"><b>Washington&#8217;s Blog<\/b><\/a><br \/>January 14, 2013<\/p>\n<p>The NSA and other intelligence officials have been <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"repeatedly caught lying about their spying programs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2013\/10\/spies-can-now-for-the-first-time-monitor-everything-about-us-and-they-can-do-so-with-a-few-clicks-of-a-mouse-and-to-placate-the-lawyers-a-drop-down-menu-of-justifications.html\">repeatedly caught lying about their spying programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government all say that the mass surveillance on Americans is unnecessary:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" title=\"3 Senators with top secret clearance\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2013\/11\/3-senators-top-secret-clearance-reviewed-surveillance-extensively-seen-evidence-bulk-collection-americans-phone-records-provided-intell.html\">3 Senators with <em>top secret clearance<\/em><\/a> \u201chave reviewed this surveillance extensively and have seen <em>no evidence<\/em> that the bulk collection of Americans&#8217; phone records has provided <em>any intelligence of value<\/em>that could not have been gathered through less intrusive means\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A member of the White House review panel on NSA surveillance said he was \u201cabsolutely\u201d surprised when he discovered the agency&#8217;s lack of evidence that the bulk collection of telephone call records had thwarted any terrorist attacks.\u201cIt was, \u2018Huh, hello? What are we doing here?&#8217;\u201d said Geoffrey Stone, a University of Chicago law professor\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was stunning. That was the ballgame,\u201d said one congressional intelligence official, who asked not to be publicly identified. \u201cIt flies in the face of everything that they have tossed at us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conclusions of the panel&#8217;s reports were at direct odds with public statements by President Barack Obama and U.S. intelligence officials.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Top terrorism and security experts also agree, saying that:<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the NSA <em>itself<\/em> no longer claims that its mass spying program has stopped terror attacks or saved lives. Instead, intelligence spokesmen themselves now claim that mass spying is just an <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u201cinsurance policy\u201d to give \u201cpeace of mind\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20140111\/22360125843\/nsa-goes-saying-bulk-metadata-collection-saves-lives-to-prevented-54-attacks-to-well-its-nice-insurance-policy.shtml\">\u201cinsurance policy\u201d to give \u201cpeace of mind\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But given that mass surveillance by governments on their own people have <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"always been used \u2014 for at least 500 years \u2014 to crush dissent\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2014\/01\/government-spying-citizens-always-focuses-crushing-dissent-keeping-us-safe.html\">always been used \u2014 for at least 500 years \u2014 to crush dissent<\/a>, that the NSA has a <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"long history of spying on Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2014\/01\/spying-congress.html\">long history of spying on Congress<\/a> for political purposes, and that high-level NSA whistleblowers say that the NSA is using spying to <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"blackmail politicians and social critics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2013\/11\/nsa-tracks-porn-discredit-activists.html\">blackmail politicians and social critics<\/a> and to <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"prosecute people the government dislikes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2013\/12\/former-top-nsa-official-now-police-state.html\">prosecute people the government dislikes<\/a>, the question is whose peace of mind the programs preserve<\/p>\n<p>And while the NSA claims that disclosure of its spying programs hurts America&#8217;s security, that&#8217;s what authoritarians <em>always<\/em> say.
