{"id":104689,"date":"2014-01-09T17:43:15","date_gmt":"2014-01-09T17:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/marketing-lobbying-assault-pushes-global-tobacco-use-to-record-levels-2\/"},"modified":"2014-01-09T19:19:23","modified_gmt":"2014-01-09T19:19:23","slug":"marketing-lobbying-assault-pushes-global-tobacco-use-to-record-levels-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/marketing-lobbying-assault-pushes-global-tobacco-use-to-record-levels-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Marketing, Lobbying Assault Pushes Global Tobacco Use to Record Levels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2014\/01\/08\/3133021\/anti-tobacco-efforts-lives-saved\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=anti-tobacco-efforts-have-saved-8-million-u-s-lives-over-the-past-50-years\" target=\"_blank\">recent estimates<\/a> that anti-tobacco efforts have saved 8 million American lives since the US Surgeon General issued the first health warnings nearly fifty years ago, a new report released Wednesday shows that smoking on a worldwide scale has actually &#8220;never been higher.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The analysis, which comes from the University of Washington and was <a href=\"http:\/\/jama.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?articleid=1812960\" target=\"_blank\">published in the <em>Journal of the American Medical Association<\/em><\/a>, shows that there are more smokers and more cigarettes being consumed across the world now than ever, particularly in places like China and other nations with fewer controls on the tobacco industry and less strict public health regulations.<\/p>\n<p>From 1980 to 2012, adult smokers increased from 721 million to nearly 1 billion and the number of cigarettes smoked went from about 5 trillion to 6.25 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>As the <em>Seattle Times<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.com\/html\/localnews\/2022617190_smokingupxml.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The study, which is one of the most comprehensive ever to examine global tobacco use, shows that the remarkable reductions in smoking rates in the United States and other wealthy countries have been offset by a growing epidemic in the developing world.
