And recently, the European Union has announced plans to spend a mind-numbing <strong>$700 billion<\/strong> on building out this centralized control grid.<strong><a title=\"European Commission wants another $700 billion for smart grid upgrades: http:\/\/www.smartgridnews.com\/artman\/publish\/Business_Markets_Pricing\/European-Commission-wants-another-700-billion-for-smart-grid-upgrades-5868.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smartgridnews.com\/artman\/publish\/Business_Markets_Pricing\/European-Commission-wants-another-700-billion-for-smart-grid-upgrades-5868.html\" target=\"_blank\">[3]<\/a><\/strong> The stated reasons for \u201csmart\u201d metering and grid technology:<\/p>\n<p>to save energy and thus aid the environment;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to increase power reliability; and<\/li>\n<li>to give you more control of energy use in your own home.<strong><a title=\"California Public Utilities Commission: Benefits of Smart Meters: http:\/\/www.cpuc.ca.gov\/PUC\/energy\/Demand+Response\/benefits.htm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cpuc.ca.gov\/PUC\/energy\/Demand+Response\/benefits.htm\" target=\"_blank\">[4]<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is now easily demonstrated that all three of these claims are patently false. \u201cSmart\u201d meters and grids typically use more energy<strong><a title=\"CBS5 News Report, Feb 2010: https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=csvmw2frBws\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=csvmw2frBws\" target=\"_blank\">[5]<\/a><\/strong>, they are extremely hackable<strong><a title=\"Krebs on Security, 09 Apr 2012: https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2012\/04\/fbi-smart-meter-hacks-likely-to-spread\/\" href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2012\/04\/fbi-smart-meter-hacks-likely-to-spread\/\" target=\"_blank\">[6]<\/a><\/strong> (making the entire power grid vulnerable<strong><a title=\"US Government Accountability Office Report &quot;Challenges in Securing the Electricity Grid&quot;, 17 Jul 2012: http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/GAO-12-926T\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/GAO-12-926T\" target=\"_blank\">[7]<\/a><\/strong>), and customers suffer increased utility bills virtually across the board immediately following a \u201csmart\u201d meter installation<strong><a title=\"USA Today, 23 Jun 2010: http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/communities\/greenhouse\/post\/2010\/07\/smart-meters-draw-complaints\/1#.UWs0dcpYXTo\" href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/communities\/greenhouse\/post\/2010\/07\/smart-meters-draw-complaints\/1#.UWs0dcpYXTo\" target=\"_blank\">[8]<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 a fact even openly acknowledged now by some utilities.<strong><a title=\"Toronto Hydro: 80% seeing increases on bills http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/end-smart-meter-hydro-program-ont-opposition-1.938350\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/end-smart-meter-hydro-program-ont-opposition-1.938350\" target=\"_blank\">[9]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the words of <strong>Dr. Timothy Schoechle<\/strong>, a leading digital technology engineer and author of <em>Getting Smarter About The Smart Grid<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe smart meter is a canard\u2013a story or a hoax based on specious and grandiose claims about energy benefits ostensibly derived from the promise of \u201ctwo-way\u201d communication with the customer\u2026 There is essentially no possibility that most smart meters or meter networks will lead to greater sustainability.\u201d<a title=\"Getting Smarter About The Smart Grid, by Dr. Timothy Schoechle: http:\/\/gettingsmarteraboutthesmartgrid.org\/\" href=\"http:\/\/gettingsmarteraboutthesmartgrid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>[10]<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<em>-Dr. Timothy Schoechle, \u201cGetting Smarter About The Smart Grid<\/em>\u201c<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Smart spy state<\/h4>\n<p><a title=\"The Borg: The largest sector supporting CISPA was energy &amp; utilities. According to a <strong>US Congressional Research Service<\/strong> report,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPolice will have access to data that might be used to track residents&#8217; daily lives and routines while in their homes, including their eating, sleeping, and showering habits, what appliances they use and when, and whether they prefer the television to the treadmill, among a host of other details.\u201d<a title=\"US Government Congressional Research Service report, &quot;Smart Meter Data: Privacy and Cybersecurity&quot;: https:\/\/www.fas.org\/sgp\/crs\/misc\/R42338.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fas.org\/sgp\/crs\/misc\/R42338.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>[11]<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<em>-US Government Congressional Research Service report, \u201cSmart Meter Data: Privacy and Cybersecurity\u201d, 2012<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But it gets worse. Utilities and public utilities commissions (such as <strong>California&#8217;s PUC<\/strong>) are actually encouraging the sale of this private data \u2014 everything you do in your own home \u2014 to 3rd-party corporate interests, for a profit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI support today&#8217;s decision because it adopts reasonable privacy and security rules and expands consumer and third-party access to electricity usage and pricing information. This is called a \u201cthermal effect\u201d. Every \u201csmart\u201d digital electric meter has what&#8217;s known as a \u201cswitching mode power supply\u201d, which is proven to directly create large amounts of <strong>dirty electricity (DE)<\/strong> \u2014 or high-frequency energy radiating throughout your home&#8217;s electric circuits, essentially creating an antenna cage. The levels of DE caused by \u201csmart\u201d meters can be several hundred times higher than some international safety standards.
