{"id":102841,"date":"2014-01-03T08:53:16","date_gmt":"2014-01-03T08:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/ruling-in-favor-of-us-spying-appealed\/"},"modified":"2014-01-03T12:38:55","modified_gmt":"2014-01-03T12:38:55","slug":"ruling-in-favor-of-us-spying-appealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/ruling-in-favor-of-us-spying-appealed\/","title":{"rendered":"Ruling in favor of US spying appealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div id=\"divLead2\">\n<p><strong>The American Civil Liberties Union and the New York Civil Liberties Union have filed a notice of appeal challenging a US federal judge\u2019s ruling that said Washington\u2019s collection of Americans\u2019 phone records was legal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The ACLU, which works to protect Americans\u2019 constitutional liberty, filed the one-page notice of appeal alongside its New York chapter on Thursday, less than a week after Judge William Pauley of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York dismissed their federal lawsuit against the National Security Agency\u2019s mass call-tracking program.<\/p>\n<p>The case,\u00a0<em>ACLU v. Clapper<\/em>, was filed in June and challenged the constitutionality of the US spy agency\u2019s phone records collection program.<\/p>\n<p>However, Judge William Pauley sided with the administration of US President Barack Obama last Friday, ruling that \u201cthe Government\u2019s bulk telephony metadata program is lawful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pauley\u2019s ruling came in sharp contrast to a ruling by another federal judge, Judge Richard Leon of the District Court for the District of Columbia, who said the program \u201calmost certainly does violate\u201d the US Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that the NSA\u2019s call-tracking program violates both statutory law and the Constitution, and we look forward to making our case in the appeals court,\u201d said ACLU Deputy Legal Director Jameel Jaffer.<\/p>\n<p>The NSA\u2019s massive collection of Americans\u2019 phone records is a major aspect of its domestic spying programs which were revealed when American whistleblower Edward Snowden\u2019s leaks blew the lid on Washington\u2019s spying activities across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Snowden\u2019s documents have also shown that the NSA tracks the use of US-based web servers by all people around the world and collects nearly 5 billion records per day on the location of cell phones.<\/p>\n<p>Other leaks also revealed that the US government eavesdropped on phone calls of at least 35 world leaders, spied on Russia\u2019s leadership with the help of Sweden, and spied on the 2010 G8 and G20 summits in Toronto as well as the 2009 G20 summit in London with the help of the host countries\u2019 governments.<\/p>\n<p>ISH\/ISH<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>With permission<br \/>\nSource: <a title=\"Ruling in favor of US spying appealed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/detail\/2014\/01\/03\/343443\/ruling-in-favor-of-us-spying-appealed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Press TV<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The American Civil Liberties Union and the New York Civil Liberties Union have filed a notice of appeal challenging a US federal judge\u2019s ruling that said Washington\u2019s collection of Americans\u2019 phone records was legal.
