In a report that unsurprisingly received little publicity, pharmaceutical giant Merck recalled some 743,000 vaccines earlier this month due to some being contaminated with glass particles.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn December 16, 2013 CDC was informed by Merck that the company planned to implement a voluntary recall of one lot (lot J007354) of Gardasil\u00ae [Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent (types 6, 11, 16, and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant], due to the potential for a small number of vials to contain glass particles as a result of breakage during the manufacturing process,\u201d a news release<\/a> on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s website states.<\/p>\n 743,360 vials were recalled, and Merck estimates \u2014 like some grotesque perversion of Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket \u2014 that only 10 of those vials are contaminated.<\/p>\n Affected vials were distributed between August 20 and October 9, and given the expansive time frame and how long it’s been, the Drug Recall Attorneys Blog<\/a> suspects \u201cit is likely that some patients have already received injections potentially contaminated with broken glass shards.\u201d<\/p>\n Gardasil claims to somehow \u201chelp protect\u201d against human papillomavirus, a virus which \u201cnearly all<\/a>\u201d sexually active man or woman contracts at least once in their lives, and which the CDC admits<\/a> \u201cthe body naturally fights off\u201d \u201cmost of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIn fact, a recent study published in the journal Vaccine estimates that 90% of HPV infections are cleared from the body within 2 years,\u201d writes Dr. Tyson Perez for GreenMed Info<\/a>.<\/p>\n Last month, daytime TV host Katie Couric was lambasted<\/a> by the mainstream media after inviting the mothers of young women who died after receiving Gardasil jabs.<\/p>\n \u201cWe guess ABC will do anything to bring Katie<\/em> out of its ratings hole<\/a>, because the HPV vaccine has been proven to be absolutely safe for girls,\u201d The Atlantic Wire<\/a> wrote. According to them, stories about people who died after receiving the vaccine mean it’s \u201cabsolutely safe.\u201d<\/p>\n Merck lists swelling, itching, bruising, headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, fainting, and seizures as possible signs of an allergic reaction, however no mention of Guillain-Barr\u00c3\u00a9 Syndrome or of the multiple reported deaths.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Couric also interviewed one of the researchers whose work helped develop the vaccine, Dr. Diane Harper. The University of Louisville professor hinted she’d reversed her position on the efficacy of the vaccine.<\/p>\n \u201c..Gardasil doesn’t last long enough to prevent cervical cancer<\/strong> and HPV infections are something that women continue to get throughout their lifetime,\u201d Harper said to Merck’s chagrin, adding that 10 to 15 percent of children up to age 11 already showed signs of HPV infection, indicating an \u201cunderlying infection rate already that’s there.\u201d<\/p>\n Back in October 2012, a report in the British Medical Journal<\/a> highlighted a case in which a 16-year-old girl experienced premature ovarian failure after receiving HPV vaccinations, and numerous instances of permanent disabilities<\/a> and deaths<\/a> have been reported as a result of HPV vaccines.<\/p>\n Despite the CDC admitting<\/a> to \u201c22,000 adverse event reports occurring in girls and women who received HPV vaccines\u201d (more than 1,671<\/a> of which were categorized as \u201cserious,\u201d), legislation is being introduced in 42 states to either make the vaccine a requirement or fund HPV awareness.<\/p>\n \u201cAbout 2 of those states enacted such legislation. New Hampshire provides the vaccination free of charge, and Virginia requires the HPV vaccine for all female students entering the sixth grade,\u201d the Drug Recall Attorneys Blog reports.<\/p>\n Despite the seriousness of the charge, Merck is optimistic people who receive glass particle injections will only experience \u201cmild reactions.\u201d However, according to the Attorneys Blog, the law firm of Pintas & Mullins \u201care currently reviewing cases of serious injury caused by broken glass in vaccine vials.\u201d<\/p>\n
