The United States is seeking to beef up its armed forces in the Pacific in order to \u00c5\u201ccounter threats\u201d in the region, according to a report.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00c5\u201cPentagon leaders are seeking to place the Air Force, Navy and Marines in dominant roles to counter threats in the Asia-Pacific region, which they have deemed to be the nation’s next big national security challenge,\u201d The Washington Post<\/em> said in a report on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u00c5\u201cThe Army is launching an ambitious campaign to transform itself and assert its relevance in the Pacific,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

US Gen. Vincent Brooks, the new top Army commander in the Pacific, wants his forces to \u00c5\u201cmore quickly and effectively respond to small conflicts, isolated acts of aggression and natural disasters.\u201d <\/p>\n

The American general, who called the initiative \u00c5\u201cPacific Pathways,\u201d is trying to make his forces \u00c5\u201cmore maritime and expeditionary.\u201d<\/p>\n

General Brooks is seeking authorization to \u00c5\u201csend key elements of a US-based infantry brigade to Asia and keep them there for months at a time, moving every few weeks to different nations to conduct training exercises,\u201d the report explained.<\/p>\n

Brooks said he wants \u00c5\u201ca capable force that can respond to a variety of contingencies\u201d rapidly. <\/p>\n

\u00c5\u201cForces that are already in motion have an advantage in responding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u00c5\u201cWe can no longer afford to build [combat] units and put them on a shelf to be used only in the event of war,\u201d the general\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s command wrote in an internal planning document.<\/p>\n

Washington\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s military build-up around China has infuriated officials in Beijing. <\/p>\n

China is considering the Pentagon\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s focus to \u00c5\u201cpivot\u201d increased US military presence in the Pacific as a strategy to counter China\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s increasing global influence.<\/p>\n

Last month, China established an air defense zone over the East China Sea, urging airlines to inform the Chinese government upon entering the region.<\/p>\n

The United States, however, has said it will not recognize the defense zone. The US also flew two B-52 bombers over the zone to challenge China.<\/p>\n
