(Photo: Handout\/Reuters)<\/span><\/span>A U.S. military aircraft <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/places\/africa\/article\/2013\/12\/21\/us-southsudan-unrest-aircraft-idUSBRE9BK07G20131221\">came under fire Saturday<\/a> during a reported evacuation mission in South Sudan, leaving four U.S. service members wounded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The aircraft diverted to an airfield outside the country and aborted the mission,&#8221; reads a statement from the U.S. military&#8217;s Africa Command.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the aircraft fell under attack en route to Bor, which is occupied by forces loyal to the rebel former Vice-President Riek Machar.<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan&#8217;s military spokesperson said renegade troops who had seized control of the region were responsible for the attacks, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/africa\/2013\/12\/us-military-plane-hit-south-sudan-20131221124842778597.html\">according to<\/a> <em>Al Jazeera America<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The injuries follow the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/dec\/19\/south-sudan-rebel-militia-seizes-strategic-town-bor\">killing<\/a> of three UN peacekeepers from India earlier this week and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/newsdesk\/2013\/12\/south-sudan-erupts.html#slide_ss_0=1\">over 500 civilian deaths<\/a>, with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/africa\/2013\/12\/us-military-plane-hit-south-sudan-20131221124842778597.html\">many warning<\/a> that oil-rich South Sudan stands on the verge of a deadly civil war as violence spreads.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of civilians are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/newsdesk\/2013\/12\/south-sudan-erupts.html#slide_ss_0=5\">fleeing the violence<\/a> and reportedly crowding into UN peacekeeping bases.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">_____________________<\/p>\n<p>This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headline\/2013\/12\/21-0\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"US Military Aircraft Comes Under Fire in South Sudan\">Common Dreams<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Sudanese civilians crowd at the United Nations mission in Bor.
