Imitation is the key to achieving higher rankings, converting customers, and increasing your sites ROI
Let’s review, you’ve researched and bolded all of your keywords, you’ve optimized your title tags, URL’s, and content. And you finally gotten around to adding a robo.txt and site map to your site. Patiently you wait for the Googlebot to scan your web pages and reward your hard work with a first page ranking. However, after weeks (maybe months or even years) you are still on the 15th page on your most desired keywords. What is a webmaster supposed to do? How do you get your site on the first page?
The answer is relatively simple, you need to do what you’re competitors are doing.
Wait, wait, wait, before you pelt me with virtual rotten tomatoes, let me explain.
To reach high rankings on Google (or any other search engine), you have to treat it like a game. There are literally hundreds of SEO strategies out there that attempt to “influence” SE spiders into giving their site high rankings. However, I have found that imitating sites that are successful is the easiest and most effective path to high rankings. After all, why reinvent the wheel if you can just replicate it? Take a page from Microsoft, Apple, and Facebook, and imitate those that are successful, but do it your way.
Keep in mind that imitation will only go so far. Just as no two people are the same, the same is true for websites. Be it the age of the domain, the types and quality of inbound links, or even the intent of the webmaster, your website is not the same as your competitors. That’s where the “do it your way” part comes into play. You need to understand (from an SEO perspective) what advantages your site has over your competitors. At the same time, identify where your site falls short. With this information at hand, you can then begin to take action.
If you are strapped for resources and are forced to choose, you should focus your attention on improving your shortcomings. If it’s a shortage of links, go out and get some. If your competitors content is of a higher quality, hire a web copywriter (with knowledge of SEO of course) to improve your sites readability (i.e.” searchability”). In short, you need to bone up on your weak spots so that your site can become a well-oiled, high ranking, high converting machine.
Once you’ve got your weak spots covered the next part is easy, whatever you’re doing well, keep doing it.
If it is high rankings you are after, it would behoove you to take a look at what strategies are working for your competitors. If it works for them, it can work for you. But before you commit to a “copy and paste” strategy, adjust your plan to fit within the confines of you website and resources. High search rankings await, it just takes a little detective work, creativity, and commitment to following your strategy through.
