Schools Now Offering “Internet Marketing Degrees”

by Brian Jenkins from BrainTrack

Over a billion and a half people surf the Web today. This huge crowd has created an abundance of great opportunities for talented and motivated Internet marketers. Many schools have responded by offering Internet marketing degree programs which focus on e-commerce and online business. These programs cover e-marketing strategies, developing a brand on the Internet, increasing a company’s web presence, and attracting more consumers to websites.

Internet marketing associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs are available both on-campus and online. Most of the programs are offered by for-profit schools. It is a good idea to find out if your prospective programs prepare you for certification from Google Advertising Professionals and the Web Analytics Association. These types of certifications will greatly enhance your resume.

Internet Marketing Bachelor’s Degree Programs

These programs typically cover topics like:

  • Determining target audiences
  • Analyzing behavior of Internet consumers
  • Creating, implementing, and tracking Internet campaigns
  • Architecture of successful web sites
  • Developing and implementing promotional email campaigns
  • Social media
  • Building and optimizing websites
  • International marketing
  • Search engine optimization
  • Web analytics

Some Internet marketing programs also review other important subjects such as mobile technologies, media planning, digital imaging, mobile advertising, audio and video for the web, Internet law and intellectual property, and multimedia design.

Internet Marketing Master’s Degree Programs

You can also obtain an MBA with a specialization in Internet marketing. These programs usually cover the core business subjects of a basic MBA program as well as search engine marketing and usability, integrated online marketing strategies, advanced interactive marketing, and management.

Most of these programs provide advanced training in many of the subjects covered in an Internet marketing bachelor’s degree program. Some of these MBA programs also cover the best practices of successful Internet marketers. In most of these programs, students develop a fully integrated business plan, which goes a long way to preparing graduates for the world of business.

The University of San Francisco (USF), a private university founded in 1855, offers a Master Certificate in Internet Marketing. USF has been designated as one of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report. (It should be noted the author has no connection with the university.)

A degree that focuses on Internet marketing can give you a competitive edge for Internet-based marketing jobs. An Internet marketing program is also beneficial for entrepreneurs.
