Iran Next Target, Warns Israeli Diplomat

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

The Age

A SENIOR Israeli diplomat has warned that Israel is ready to launch a military offensive against Iran to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons.

In an interview with The Age, Dan Gillerman, who was Israel’s permanent representative at the United Nations from 2003 until last September, said time for diplomatic efforts to stop Iran acquiring a nuclear capability might have already expired.

“The world cannot afford to live with a nuclear Iran,” Mr Gillerman said. “I hope diplomacy will work, but I’m not sure we have the time for diplomacy to work.

“Israel has made it very clear that it will not live with a nuclear Iran and I believe that Israel has the ability and the capacity to make sure it will not happen.”

Mr Gillerman, who will visit Australia later this month, said two clocks were running with respect to Iran: “There is the technological clock of Iran and there is the diplomatic clock, and I think the Iranian clock is running much faster.”

Detailed military plans to bomb Iran’s nuclear enrichment plant have long been on the table of Israeli military commanders. Outgoing Defence Minister Ehud Barak is believed to have requested US support for a military strike last May, but the plans were aborted after then-president George Bush declined to endorse them.

Last June, Israel carried out military exercises over the Mediterranean involving more than 100 F-16 and F-15 fighters in what was interpreted as a rehearsal for an attack on Iran’s nuclear plants. At the time, The New York Times reported that as well as sending a warning to Tehran, the exercise was intended as a message to the US that Israel was prepared to act militarily if diplomatic efforts to stop Iran from producing bomb-grade uranium faltered.

On Tuesday, the man likely to lead Israel’s next government, Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, made a reference to Iran in his victory speech. He said: “Israel is facing an Iranian threat, from afar and from near. The nuclear threat and the terror threat … it will be up to us to deal with this, and we will be able to deal with these two challenges successfully.”

Israel has carried out two strikes on suspected nuclear sites over the past 30 years. In 1981, its jets bombed Iraq’s nuclear reactor at Osirak, and in September 2007, Israeli aircraft bombed a structure in Syria that was alleged to have housed a nuclear reactor.

Any new attack against Iran would be much more complicated, with the country’s uranium enrichment plants spread across many sites. Iran’s comparatively sophisticated military and its distance from Israel would present further complications for military planners and risk setting off a full-scale war.

Mr Gillerman said the world could not afford to underestimate the seriousness of the Iranian threat. “We have a very extreme, radical fundamentalist regime there with a president (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) who denies the Holocaust while preparing the next one, and has vowed to wipe Israel off the face of the map. My advice to the rest of the world is to listen to him very carefully and take him at face value.”

    actually every nation on the planet contains a mixed bag. Just as politicians poorly represent the peoples true interest’s in north America, the same goes on across the world. One newstation broadcasts information telling us why we should fear or buy or judge another while the other propegates an equally compelling story of how we and our children are stupid little monsters as well. It is through the manipulation of belief and through the apathetic response of people like u and me that creates never ending wars and never ending pain.

    I highly respect the people of Israel. This tiny nation of 7.4 million of which approxiametly 5.6 are Jews, has time and again, when the odds were staggeringly against them, and while the whole world was watching, defeated the Islamofascist Orches in several for the Muslims humiliating wars. Just contemplate the fact that the country is surrounded by over 400 million hostile Arabs that aspire to destroy it and you will understand the resolve of the Israeli people. Israel, the only democracy in the region, is run by very competent people. Rest assured Arash, that measures will be taken to protect its citizens. The Islamonazis of Iran will be no match, sadly though, there are only so many times a nuclear threat from fascistoid regimes can be postponed through preemptive strikes before evolving into something bigger and worse. It could just be the prelude of a much bigger conflict. There are 1.4 billion followers of a destructive cult just waiting for an excuse to turn any anti-Islamic activity global. I’m afraid we are just delaying the Inevitable. With Nazism and Communism dealt with, the civilized world will sooner or later have to, either deal with, or succumb to Islam. In my opinion we should act and the sooner the better. Yashar Kochech Israel, God bless!

    Maximus V, your comment should be posted under Strange Cuisine(Or, Some Things are Just Not Worth Eating). Just because someone dares to have an alternate viewpoint that does not coincide with yours, you start foaming at the mouth. Get a freakin´ grip, this is just a place for debate and not a World War III battleground!

    I’m sorry, I don’t see the connection to Apartheid. There is no institutionalized discrimination based on race, ethnicity or creed. All Israeli citizens, whether they are Jews, Christians or Muslims, enjoy equal civil rights guaranteed by the country’s constitution. Israel, the only democracy in the region, is encircled by enemies hostile to her existence, that have tried more than once to obliterate her off the map. Really Maximus V, who are the fascists, the 5.6 million Jews of Israel that have granted democratic rights to all its citizens, including those that don’t support her existence, or the 1.4 billion Muslims who support vocal threats of violence and physical acts of terror against a tiny democracy and wish her demise?

    Ifidel,
    according to ACRI “The Association for Civil Rights in Israel”- Human rights in Israel aren’t in a constitution. Only some are in the Basic Laws, and those apply only for Jews. Israeli Arab citizens have no rights whatever.
    Arab Israelis in Israel are disadvantaged, persecuted, endangered, and live under third-world conditions, especially in “unrecognized villages” in the Negev and Galilee;

    Though legally entitled to full equality, israeli Arabs are effectively victimized by institutional discrimination “deriving from the concept of the State and its actual policies:”

    – Judaizing the Negev and Galilee, for example;

    – legislation favoring Jews over Arabs, such as the right to citizenship;

    – anachronistic institutions since the founding of the State that strictly serve Jewish majority interests in all respects;

    Israeli Jews can move freely throughout the country and on special OPT roads. Israeli Arabs are greatly restricted, and so are Palestinians in the Territories.

    In Occupied Palestine, conditions are far worse and oppressive. Since decades, Israel has denied fundamental rights to four million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza,” effectively controlling their lives, and repressively denying them their rights under military occupation.

    In addition, Israeli laws and policies reflect institutionalized discrimination favoring Jews alone - no others, including Christians. Those most aggrieved are the Palestinians in the OPT. For Jews, however, laws have been passed to guarantee equality even though they’re loosely enforced and are seriously eroding. Inequality and discrimination persist because they’re hard to prove and Israeli society never internalized these values in practice. The list goes on and on and on……
