But over the course of time, the occupation hurt the Iraqis. ولكن بمرور الوقت ، فإن الاحتلال تؤذي العراقيين. And I didn’t see any humanitarian support. ولم ارى اى دعم انسانى.

Paul Rockwell: What experiences turned you against the war and made you leave the Marines? بول روكويل : ما هي الخبرات التي حولت كنت ضد الحرب والذي ادى بك الى ترك المارينز؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: I was in charge of a platoon that consists of machine gunners and missile men. مآسي : الأول كان مسؤولا عن فصيلة ان يتكون من آلة المدفعيون والقذائف الرجال. Our job was to go into certain areas of the towns and secure the roadways. مهمتنا هي الى الخوض في مناطق معينة من البلدات وتأمين الطرق.

There was this one particular incident — and there’s many more — the one that really pushed me over the edge. وكان هناك حادثة معينة هذا واحد -- وهناك العديد من اكثر -- واحد حقا ان يدفع لي اكثر من الحافه. It involved a car with Iraqi civilians. انه ينطوي على سيارة مع المدنيين العراقيين. From all the intelligence reports we were getting, the cars were loaded down with suicide bombs or material. من كل التقارير الاستخباريه ونحن يزدادون ، وحملت سيارات فلتسقط القنابل الانتحاريه او ماديه. Paul Rockwell: Lit up? بول روكويل : اضاءت ما يصل؟ You mean you fired machine guns? كنت تعني انك اطلقت المدافع الرشاشه؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Right. مآسي : الحق. Every car that we lit up we were expecting ammunition to go off. كل سيارة مضاءة حتى اننا كنا ننتظر والذخيره لتنفجر. But we never heard any. ولكننا لم يسمع اي. Well this particular vehicle we didn’t destroy completely, and one gentleman looked up at me and said: ‘Why did you kill my brother? هذا بالاضافة الى سيارة خاصة واننا لم تدمر تماما ، واحدة حتى في نظر الرجل المحترم ، وقال لي : 'لماذا انت تقتل أخي؟ We didn’t do anything wrong.’ That hit me like a ton of bricks. اننا لم نفعل اي شيء خطأ. Paul Rockwell: He spoke English? بول روكويل : تحدث الانجليزيه؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Oh, yeah. مآسي : أوه ، نعم.

Paul Rockwell: Baghdad was being bombed. بول روكويل : قصفت بغداد كان يجري. The civilians were trying to get out, right? فان المدنيين كانوا يحاولون الخروج ، الحق؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Yes. مآسي : نعم. They received pamphlets, propaganda we dropped on them. انهم تلقوا الكراريس ، ونحن اسقطت على الدعايه لها. It said ‘Just throw up your hands, lay down weapons.’ That’s what they were doing, but we were still lighting them up. وقال انه 'حتى مجرد رمي يديك ، والقاء الاسلحة.' ، هذا ما كانوا يفعلون ، ولكن كنا لا نزال الاضاءه تصل اليهم. Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Five times. مآسي : خمس مرات.

“We Lit Him Up Pretty Good” "نحن أضاءت له حتى جيد جدا"

There was Rekha. وكان هناك Rekha. The gentleman was driving a stolen work utility van. الشرف كان يقود المسروقه العمل فان المنفعه. He didn’t stop. ولم يكتف. With us being trigger happy, we didn’t really give this guy much of a chance. معنا يجري تحريك سعيدة ، ونحن في الحقيقة لا يعطي الكثير من هذا الرجل فرصة. We lit him up pretty good. نحن أضاءت له حتى جيد جدا. Then we inspected the back of the van. ثم اننا بتفتيش مؤخرة الشاحنه. We found nothing. وجدنا شيئا. No explosives. اي متفجرات.

Paul Rockwell: The reports said the cars were loaded with explosives. بول روكويل : قالت تقارير السيارات التي كانت محملة بالمتفجرات. In all the incidents did you find that to be the case? في جميع هذه الحوادث هل تجد ان يكون لهذه القضية؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Never. مآسي : ابدا. Not once. ليس مرة واحدة. There were no secondary explosions. ولم تكن هناك انفجارات ثانويه. As a matter of fact, we lit up a rally. كمساله الحقيقة ، ونحن مضاءة حتى اجتماع حاشد.

Paul Rockwell: A demonstration? بول روكويل : مظاهره؟ Where? وأين؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: On the outskirts of Baghdad. مآسي : على مشارف بغداد. Near a military compound. بالقرب من مجمع عسكري. There were demonstrators at the end of the street. كانت هناك المتظاهرين في نهاية الشارع. They were young and they had no weapons. كانوا صغارا ولم يكن لديها اي اسلحه. And when we rolled onto the scene, there was already a tank that was parked on the side of the road. ونحن عندما توالت على مسرح الأحداث ، كأن هناك فعلا دبابه كانت متوقفة على جانب الطريق. If the Iraqis wanted to do something, they could have blown up the tank. واذا اراد العراقيون ان تفعل شيئا ، وانهم يمكن ان يكون تفجير الدبابه. But they didn’t. لكنهم لم. They were only holding a demonstration. انها ليست سوى عقد المظاهره. Down at the end of the road, we saw some RPGs (rocket–propelled grenades) lined up against the wall. تراجع في نهاية الطريق ، وشاهدنا بعض rpgs (قذائف صاروخيه) اصطف ضد الجدار. That put us at ease because we thought: ‘Wow, if they were going to blow us up, they would have done it.’ ان تضعنا في سهولة لاننا الفكر : 'نجاح ، واذا كانوا يذهبون الى ضربة تصل الينا ، لكانت قد فعلت ذلك.'

Paul Rockwell: Were the protest signs in English or Arabic? بول روكويل : تم الاحتجاج علامات باللغه الانكليزيه او العربية؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Both. مآسي : كلا.

Paul Rockwell: Who gave the order to wipe the demonstrators out? بول روكويل : من الذي اعطى من اجل محو المتظاهرين من اصل؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Higher Command. مآسي : القيادة العليا. We were told to be on the lookout for civilians because a lot of the Fedayeen and the Republican Guards had tossed away uniforms and put on civilian clothes and were mounting terrorist attacks on American soldiers. وقيل لنا ان على مراقبة للمدنيين لأن الكثير من الفدائيين والحرس الجمهوري قد قذف بعيدا عن الزي الرسمي ووضع ملابس مدنيه وكانت تتزايد الهجمات الارهابيه على الجنود الاميركيين. The intelligence reports that were given to us were basically known by every member of the chain of command. تقارير المخابرات التي اعطيت لنا كانت اساسا معروفة من قبل كل عضو في سلسلة القيادة. The rank structure that was implemented in Iraq by the chain of command was evident to every Marine in Iraq. برتبة هيكل ان نفذ في العراق عن طريق سلسلة القيادة وكان واضحا ان كل البحرية في العراق. The order to shoot the demonstrators, I believe, came from senior government officials including intelligence communities within the military and the US government? الامر باطلاق النار على المتظاهرين ، واعتقد ، جاءت من كبار المسؤولين في الحكومة بما فيها الاستخبارات العسكرية داخل المجتمعات وحكومة الولايات المتحدة؟

Paul Rockwell: What kind of firepower was employed? بول روكويل : أي نوع من القوة الناريه كان يعمل؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: M-16s, 50-cal.machine guns. مآسي : م - أف 16 ، 50 - cal.machine البنادق.

Paul Rockwell: You fired into six or ten kids? بول روكويل : عليك باطلاق النار على ستة او عشرة اطفال؟ Were they all taken out? كانوا جميعا اخرجت؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Oh, yeah. مآسي : أوه ، نعم. Well, I had a ‘mercy’ on one guy. حسنا ، كانت لي 'رحمة' على رجل واحد. When we rolled up, he was hiding behind a concrete pillar. اننا حتى عندما رحل ، وكان يختبئ خلف عمود ملموسة. Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Probably about one or two hours. مآسي : ربما واحد او حوالى ساعتين. This is another thing, too. هذا هو شيء آخر ايضا. I am so glad I am talking with you, because I suppressed all of this. وانا سعيد بذلك وانا اتكلم معكم ، لأنني قمعت كل هذا.

Paul Rockwell: Well I appreciate you giving me the information, as hard as it must be to recall the painful details. بول روكويل : حسنا انني اقدر لكم على اعطائي المعلومات ، كما انه من الصعب كما يجب ان نذكر تفاصيل مؤلمة.

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: That’s all right. مآسي : هذا كل الحق. It’s kind of therapy for me. انه نوع من العلاج بالنسبة لي. Because it’s something that I had repressed for a long time. لأنه ما كان لي أن القمع لفترة طويلة.

Paul Rockwell: And the incident? بول روكويل : وهذا الحادث؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: There was an incident with one of the cars. مآسي : كان هناك حادث مع احدى السيارات. We shot an individual with his hands up. نحن الطلقه فردي مع يديه. He got out of the car. وقال انه نزل من السياره. He was badly shot. كان سيئا بالرصاص. We lit him up. ونحن حتى أضاءت له. I don’t know who started shooting first. لا أدري الذين بدأوا اطلاق النار اولا. One of the Marines came running over to where we were and said: ‘You all just shot a guy with his hands up.’ Man, I forgot about this. واحدة من أكثر من المارينز جاءت بالظهور الى حيث كنا وقال : 'لكم جميعا عادل اطلقت النار على رجل مع يديه.' الرجل ، وأنا نسي هذا.

Depleted Uranium and Cluster Bombs اليورانيوم المنضب والقنابل العنقوديه

Paul Rockwell: You mention missiles and machine guns. بول روكويل : لقد ذكرتم الصواريخ والمدافع الرشاشه. What can you tell me about cluster bombs, or depleted uranium? ماذا يمكنك ان اخبرني عن القنابل العنقوديه ، أو اليورانيوم المنضب؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Depleted uranium. مآسي : اليورانيوم المنضب. I know what it does. وانا اعرف ما تقوم به. It’s basically like leaving plutonium rods around. انها اساسا مثل ترك القضبان حول البلوتونيوم. I’m 32 years old. انا وعمره 32 عاما. I have eighty-percent of my lung capacity. لقد وثمانون في المئة من بلادي قدرة الرءه. I ache all the time. انا الوجع كل الوقت. Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Oh, yeah. مآسي : أوه ، نعم. It’s everywhere. انها في كل مكان. DU is everywhere on the battlefield. دو هو في كل مكان على أرض المعركه. If you hit a tank, there’s dust. اذا كنت تصل الى دبابه ، وهناك الغبار.

Paul Rockwell: Did you breath any dust? بول روكويل : هل نفسا اي غبار؟

Paul Rockwell: And if DU is affecting you or our troops, it’s impacting Iraqi civilians. بول روكويل : واذا دو تؤثر عليك او قواتنا ، وأنها تؤثر على المدنيين العراقيين.

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Oh, yeah. مآسي : أوه ، نعم. They got a big wasteland problem. انها حصلت مشكلة كبيرة القفار.

Paul Rockwell: Do Marines have any precautions about dealing with DU? بول روكويل : هل لديها أي احتياطات المارينز حول كيفية التعامل مع دو؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Not that I know of. مآسي : لا اعرف أن لل. Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: I had one of my Marines in my battalion who lost his leg from a cluster bomb. مآسي : كان لي احد زملائي في بلادي كتيبة مشاة البحرية الذي فقد ساقه من قنبلة عنقوديه.

Paul Rockwell: What happened? بول روكويل : ماذا حدث؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: He stepped on it. مآسي : سعادة تكثيف عليه. We didn’t get to training about clusters until about a month before I left. ونحن لم نصل الى تدريب نحو التكتلات حتى حوالى شهر قبل أن أغادر.

Paul Rockwell: What kind of training? بول روكويل : اي نوع من التدريب؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: They told us what they looked like, and not to step on them. مآسي : قالوا لنا انهم ما يشبه ، وليس خطوة الى عليهم.

Paul Rockwell: Were you in any areas where they were dropped? بول روكويل : هل كنت في أي مجال من المجالات حيث اسقطت؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Oh yeah. مآسي : أوه نعم. They were everywhere. كانوا في كل مكان.

Paul Rockwell: Dropped from the air? بول روكويل : اسقطت من الجو؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: From the air as well as artillery. مآسي : من الجو وكذلك المدفعيه.

Paul Rockwell: Are they dropped far away from cities, or inside the cities? بول روكويل : انها اسقطت بعيدا عن المدن ، او داخل المدن؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: They are used everywhere. مآسي : أنها تستخدم في كل مكان. Now if you talked to a Marine artillery officer, he would give you the runaround, the politically correct answer. الان اذا كنت تحدثت الى ضابط البحرية والمدفعيه ، وقال انه سوف اعطيك الهارب ، الجواب الصحيح سياسيا. But for an average grunt, they’re everywhere. ولكن لمدة متوسطها النخير ، ويبحثون في كل مكان.

Paul Rockwell: Including inside the towns and cities? بول روكويل : بما في داخل البلدات والمدن؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Yes, if you were going into a city, you knew there were going to be cluster bombs. مآسي : نعم ، إذا كنت في طريقها الى المدينة ، وانت تعرف ان هناك يذهبون الى ان القنابل العنقوديه.

Paul Rockwell: Cluster bombs are anti-personnel weapons. بول روكويل : القنابل العنقوديه هي الاسلحة المضاده للافراد. They are not precise. انها ليست دقيقة. They don’t injure buildings, or hurt tanks. انهم لا تجرح المباني ، او تؤذي الدبابات. Only people and living things. فقط الناس والاشياء الحيه. There are a lot of undetonated duds and they go off after the battles are over. هناك الكثير من undetonated الفاشلون وانها تنفجر بعد معارك قد ولت.

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Once the round leaves the tube, the cluster bomb has a mind of its own. مآسي : بعد جولة يترك الانبوبه ، وقنابل عنقوديه لها الاعتبار من جانبها. There’s always human error. هناك دوما خطأ بشري. I’m going to tell you. أنا ذاهب لنقول لكم. The armed forces are in a tight spot over there. القوات المسلحه هي في ضيق اكثر من بقعة هناك. It’s starting to leak out about the civilian casualties that are taking place. انها بدأت تسرب خارج عن وقوع اصابات بين المدنيين التي تجري. The Iraqis know. العراقيون يعرفون. Embedded Reporters تكمن مراسلون

Paul Rockwell: How are the embedded reporters responding? بول روكويل : كيف هي متاصله للصحافيين ردا؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: I had embedded reporters in my unit, not my platoon. مآسي : كان لي جزءا لا يتجزأ من الصحافيين في بلدي وحده ، وليس قصدي الفصيله. One we had was a South African reporter. لدينا كان واحد من جنوب افريقيا مراسل. He was scared shitless. وقال انه كان خائفا shitless. Paul Rockwell: Why? بول روكويل : لماذا؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: It was when we started going into Baghdad. مآسي : انه عندما بدأنا الخوض في بغداد. I talked with my commanding officer after the incident. لقد تحدثت مع نظيري ضابط القيادة بعد الحادث. We killed a bunch of civilians.’ He goes: ‘No, today was a good day.’ And when he said that, I said ‘oh, my goodness, what the hell am I into?’ نحن قتلت مجموعة من المدنيين. I just bought into the whole thing. انا فقط اشترى في الجامع شيء.

Paul Rockwell: What changed you? بول روكويل : ماذا تغير؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: The civilian casualties taking place. مآسي : تحدث الاصابات في صفوف المدنيين. That was what made the difference. وهذا هو ما يجعل الاختلاف. That was when I changed. هذا هو انني عندما تغيرت.

Paul Rockwell: Did the revelations that the government fabricated the evidence for war affect the troops? بول روكويل : ألم تكشف ان الحكومة لفقت الادله الحرب تؤثر على القوات؟

Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: Yes. مآسي : نعم. I killed innocent people for our government. الأول قتل الناس الابرياء لحكومتنا. For what? لماذا؟ What did I do? ماذا فعلت؟ Where is the good coming out of it? اين هو حسن الخروج منه؟ I feel like I’ve had a hand in some sort of evil lie at the hands of our government. أشعر مثل أنا كنت قد اليد في نوع من الشر يكمن في ايدي حكومتنا. I just feel embarrassed, ashamed about it. انا فقط أشعر بالحرج ، ويخجل من حوله.

Paul Rockwell: I understand that all the incidents — killing civilians at checkpoints, itchy fingers at the rally — weigh on you. بول روكويل : افهم ان كل هذه الحوادث -- قتل المدنيين عند نقاط التفتيش ، حاك الاصابع في رالي -- تلقي بثقلها على اليكم. Sgt. الرقيب. Massey: There was an incident. مآسي : كان هناك حادث. It was right after the fall of Baghdad, when we went back down South. فمن الصواب بعد سقوط بغداد ، وعندما ذهبنا التراجع الجنوب. We’re committing genocide. نحن تهمة ارتكاب جرائم ابادة. ‘ He asked me something and I said that with the killing of civilians and the depleted uranium we’re leaving over here, we’re not going to have to worry about terrorists. 'طلب مني شيئا وقلت انه مع قتل المدنيين واليورانيوم المنضب نحن تاركة اكثر من هنا ، نحن لن يكون تقلق على الارهابيين. He didn’t like that. وقال انه لا يريد ذلك. He got up and stormed off. وحصل ما يصل من والمقتحم. And I knew right then and there that my career was over. وكنت اعرف الحق ثم وهناك ان حياتي قد انتهت.
