Documents prove FBI tracks Internet and phones

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

FBI also spies on home soil for military, documents show; Much information acquired without court order John Byrne The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been routinely monitoring the e-mails, instant messages and cell phone calls of suspects across the United States -- and has done so, in many cases, without the approval of a court. Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act and given to the Washington Post -- which stuck ...

5,000 children a month added to DNA database

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Christopher Hope One in four people being added to the DNA database is a child, it emerged yesterday. The figure provides further evidence that the Government's "Big Brother" national database is increasingly targeting young people before they are old enough to vote. Data obtained by the Liberal Democrats from Parliamentary Questions shows that the proportion of children being added is rising, with 5,000 being included every month. Between October and January, 25 ...

Memo linked to warrantless surveillance

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Associated Press WASHINGTON - For at least 16 months after the Sept. 11 terror attacks in 2001, the Bush administration believed that the Constitution's protection against unreasonable searches and seizures on U.S. soil didn't apply to its efforts to protect against terrorism. That view was expressed in a Justice Department legal memo dated Oct. 23, 2001. The administration on Wednesday stressed that it now disavows that view. The October 2001 memo ...

CCTV cameras not capturing many crimes

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

San Francisco's 68 controversial anti-crime cameras haven't deterred criminals from committing assaults, sex offenses or robberies - and they've only moved homicides down the block, according to a new report from UC Berkeley. Researchers found that nonviolent thefts dropped by 22 percent within 100 feet of the cameras, but the devices had no effect on burglaries or car theft. And they've had no effect on violent crime. Mayor Gavin Newsom called the ...

An overview of the NSA¡¯s domestic spying program

Monday, March 17th, 2008

In Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, Siobhan Gorman pulled together the disparate threads of reporting on what's known of the NSA's secret domestic spy program, and combined them with some of her own reporting to confirm, once again, that the NSA's program is another incarnation of the Pentagon's erstwhile Total Information Awareness program. Gorman also describes how Carnivore, the SWIFT database snooping program, and basically every other "Big ...

Faceless: Chasing the Data Shadow

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Remote-controlled UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) scan the city for anti-social behaviour. Talking cameras scold people for littering the streets (in children¡¯s voices). Biometric data is extracted from CCTV images to identify pedestrians by their face or gait. A housing project¡¯s surveillance cameras stream images onto the local cable channel, enabling the community to monitor itself. These are not projections of the science fiction film that this text discusses, but techniques ...
