Door Bruce Schneier | Wat is het deze dagen met fotografen? Zijn zij werkelijk alle terroristen, of denkt iedereen enkel zij zijn? Sinds 9/11, is er een stijgende oorlog op fotografie geweest. Fotografen heb [[been]] gekweld, gevraagd, vastgehouden, gearresteerd of slechter, en verklaard aan ben ongewenst. Wij zijn herhaaldelijk verteld aan horloge uit voor fotografen, vooral verdacht degenen. Duidelijk gaat om het even welke terrorist naar eerste foto zijn doel, zodat wordt de waakzaamheid vereist.

Behalve dat is het onzin. De 9/11 terroristen fotografeerden om het even wat niet. Noch vervoerde Londen bommenwerpers, de de metrobommenwerpers van Madrid, of de vloeibare bommenwerpers die in 2006 worden gearresteerd. Het timoteegras McVeigh fotografeerde niet het Federale Gebouw van de Stad van Oklahoma. Unabomber fotografeerde om het even wat niet; noch deed schoen-bommenwerper Richard Reid. De foto's worden niet gevonden onder de documenten van Palestijnse zelfmoordbommenwerpers. IRA werd niet gekend voor zijn fotografie. Zelfs die vervaardigde terroristenpercelen dat de overheid van de V.S. houdt van te spreken over - Voet. De terroristen van Dix, de JFK luchthavenbommenwerpers, Miami 7, Lackawanna 6 - geen fotografie.

Gezien echte terroristen, en zelfs wannabe terroristen, niet om om het even wat te fotograferen, waarom is schijnen het dergelijke doordringende conventionele wijsheid dat de terroristen hun doelstellingen fotograferen? Waarom is onze vrees zo groot dat wij geen keus dan van om het even welke fotograaf verdacht te zijn hebben?

Omdat het a is movie-perceel bedreiging.

Is een movie-perceel bedreiging een specifieke bedreiging, levendig in onze meningen zoals het perceel van movie. U herinnert hen van de maanden na de 9/11 aanvallen: bloedzweer die van gewassenstofdoeken wordt uitgespreid, een vervuilde melklevering, de duikers van de terroristenscuba-uitrusting die met almanacs worden bewapend. Onze verbeelding stelt wildernis met gedetailleerde en specifieke bedreigingen, van het nieuws in werking, en van daadwerkelijke movies en televisie toont. Deze movie percelen resoneren in onze meningen en in de meningen van anderen wij aan spreken. En velen van ons worden doen schrikken.

De terroristen die beelden nemen is een quintessential detail in om het even welke goede movie. Natuurlijk houdt het dat de terroristen steek beelden van hun doelstellingen zullen nemen. Zij moeten verkenning doen, niet zij? Wij hebben 45 minuten van televisieactie vóór de daadwerkelijke terroristenaanval nodig - 90 minuten als het movie is - en een fotografiescène is enkel perfect. It’s our movie-plot terrorists that are photographers, even if the real-world ones are not.

The problem with movie-plot security is it only works if we guess the plot correctly. If we spend a zillion dollars defending Wimbledon and terrorists blow up a different sporting event, that’s money wasted. If we post guards all over the Underground and terrorists bomb a crowded shopping area, that’s also a waste. If we teach everyone to be alert for photographers, and terrorists don’t take photographs, we’ve wasted money and effort, and taught people to fear something they shouldn’t.

And even if terrorists did photograph their targets, the math doesn’t make sense. Billions of photographs are taken by honest people every year, 50 billion by amateurs alone in the US And the national monuments you imagine terrorists taking photographs of are the same ones tourists like to take pictures of. If you see someone taking one of those photographs, the odds are infinitesimal that he’s a terrorist.

Of course, it’s far easier to explain the problem than it is to fix it. Because we’re a species of storytellers, we find movie-plot threats uniquely compelling. A single vivid scenario will do more to convince people that photographers might be terrorists than all the data I can muster to demonstrate that they’re not.

Fear aside, there aren’t many legal restrictions on what you can photograph from a public place that’s already in public view. If you’re harassed, it’s almost certainly a law enforcement official, public or private, acting way beyond his authority. There’s nothing in any post-9/11 law that restricts your right to photograph.

This is worth fighting. Search “photographer rights” on Google and download one of the several wallet documents that can help you if you get harassed; I found one for the UK, US, and Australia. Don’t cede your right to photograph in public. Don’t propagate the terrorist photographer story. Remind them that prohibiting photography was something we used to ridicule about the USSR. Eventually sanity will be restored, but it may take a while.
