Schneier: I nostri dati, noi stessi

Non è giusto i nostre clienti di banca e cartelle di riserva, o le nostre fatture dettagliate, elencando ogni acquisto di carta di credito e telefonata che facciamo. È sistemi automatici dell'accumulazione del strada-tributo, schede di affinità del supermercato, ATMs e così via.
È inoltre le nostre vite. Le nostre lettere di amore e chiacchierata amichevole. I nostri E-maihi personali e messaggi di SMS. I nostri programmi di affari, strategie e conversazioni offhand. I nostri leanings e posizioni politici. E questo è giusto i dati che ci interagiamo con. Tutti abbiamo auto dell'ombra vivere nelle banche di dati delle centinaia mediatori di informazioni di società' - le informazioni su noi che sono sia sorprendentemente personali che uncannily complete - tranne gli errori che potete nè vedere nè correggere.
Che cosa accade ai nostri dati accade noi stessi.
Questo auto dell'ombra non si siede appena là: È toccato costantemente. Ha esaminato e giudicato. Quando facciamo domanda per un prestito di banca, è i nostri dati che determinano se o non li otteniamo. Quando proviamo al bordo un aeroplano, è i nostri dati che determinano quanto otteniamo completamente cercati - o se otteniamo al bordo affatto. Se il governo desidera studiarlo, sono più probabili passare con i nostri dati che sono di cercare le nostre sedi; per molto che i dati, neppure non hanno bisogno di una garanzia.
Chi controlla i nostri comandi di dati le nostre vite.
È allineare. Chiunque controlla i nostri dati può decidere se possiamo ottenere un prestito di banca, su un aeroplano o in un paese. O che specie dello sconto otteniamo da un commerciante, o persino come siamo curati dal supporto di cliente. Un datore di lavoro potenziale può, illegalmente negli Stati Uniti, esaminare i nostri dati medici e decidere se o non offrirci un lavoro. La polizia inscatola mine i nostri dati e decide se o non siamo un rischio del terrorista. Se un criminale può ottenere abbastanza dei nostri dati, può carte di credito aperte nei nostri nomi, soldi del sifone dai nostri clienti di investimento, persino vendere la nostra proprietà. Il furto di identità è l'ultima prova che il controllo dei nostri dati significa il controllo della nostra vita.
Dobbiamo prendere indietro i nostri dati.
Our data is a part of us. It’s intimate and personal, and we have basic rights to it. It should be protected from unwanted touch.
We need a comprehensive data privacy law. This law should protect all information about us, and not be limited merely to financial or health information. It should limit others’ ability to buy and sell our information without our knowledge and consent. It should allow us to see information about us held by others, and correct any inaccuracies we find. It should prevent the government from going after our information without judicial oversight. It should enforce data deletion, and limit data collection, where necessary. And we need more than token penalties for deliberate violations.
This is a tall order, and it will take years for us to get there. It’s easy to do nothing and let the market take over. But as we see with things like grocery store club cards and click-through privacy policies on websites, most people either don’t realize the extent their privacy is being violated or don’t have any real choice. And businesses, of course, are more than happy to collect, buy, and sell our most intimate information. But the long-term effects of this on society are toxic; we give up control of ourselves.
