Schneier: Nuestros datos, Ourselves

No es justo nuestras cuentas bancarias y listas comunes, o nuestras cuentas detalladas, enumerando cada compra de tarjeta de crédito y llamada telefónica que hacemos. Es sistemas automáticos de la colección del camino-peaje, tarjetas de la afinidad del supermercado, ATMs y así sucesivamente.
Es también nuestras vidas. Nuestras letras del amor y charla amistosa. Nuestros E-maices personales y mensajes de SMS. Nuestros planes de negocio, estrategias y conversaciones offhand. Nuestros leanings y posiciones políticos. Y esto es justo los datos que obramos recíprocamente con. Todos tenemos uno mismo de la sombra el vivir en los bancos de datos de centenares corredores de información de las corporaciones los' - la información sobre nosotros que es asombrosamente personal y uncannily completa - a excepción de los errores que usted puede ni ver ni corregir.
Qué sucede a nuestros datos sucede nosotros mismos.
Este uno mismo de la sombra apenas no se sienta allí: Se toca constantemente. Ha examinado y juzgado. Cuando solicitamos un préstamo de banco, es nuestros datos que se determinan si o no los conseguimos. Cuando intentamos subir a un aeroplano, es nuestros datos que se determinan cómo conseguimos a fondo buscados - o si conseguimos subir en todos. Si el gobierno desea investigarnos, son más probables pasar con nuestros datos que son buscar nuestros hogares; para los muchos de eso los datos, incluso no necesitan una autorización.
Quién controla nuestros controles de datos nuestras vidas.
Es verdad. Quienquiera controla nuestros datos puede decidir si podemos conseguir un préstamo de banco, sobre un aeroplano o en un país. O qué clase de descuento conseguimos de un comerciante, o aún cómo la ayuda de cliente nos tratamos. Un patrón potencial puede, ilegal en los E.E.U.U., examinar nuestros datos médicos y decidir si o no ofrecernos un trabajo. El policía puede el míos nuestros datos y decide si o no somos un riesgo del terrorista. Si un criminal puede conseguir el asimiento de bastantes de nuestros datos, él puede las tarjetas de crédito abierto en nuestros nombres, dinero del sifón fuera de nuestras cuentas de la inversión, incluso vender nuestra característica. El hurto de la identidad es la última prueba que el control de nuestros datos significa control de nuestra vida.
Necesitamos tomar detrás nuestros datos.
Our data is a part of us. It’s intimate and personal, and we have basic rights to it. It should be protected from unwanted touch.
We need a comprehensive data privacy law. This law should protect all information about us, and not be limited merely to financial or health information. It should limit others’ ability to buy and sell our information without our knowledge and consent. It should allow us to see information about us held by others, and correct any inaccuracies we find. It should prevent the government from going after our information without judicial oversight. It should enforce data deletion, and limit data collection, where necessary. And we need more than token penalties for deliberate violations.
This is a tall order, and it will take years for us to get there. It’s easy to do nothing and let the market take over. But as we see with things like grocery store club cards and click-through privacy policies on websites, most people either don’t realize the extent their privacy is being violated or don’t have any real choice. And businesses, of course, are more than happy to collect, buy, and sell our most intimate information. But the long-term effects of this on society are toxic; we give up control of ourselves.
