The 34-kilohertz tag will be the implanted in the patients upper right arm and a 16-digit code will be able to provide access to a database via an RFID reader containing their medical history and existing conditions.

Despite warnings from privacy advocates and protesters who held an interfaith prayer vigil outside the centre, Mary Barnes of Alzheimer’s Community Care insists the implants are “a safety net”.

Privacy advocates would rather see a bracelet used instead of the implants, also if the chips malfunction it would lead to surgery.

“This is by definition a way of doing something that denies a person control,” says Lee Tien, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, San Francisco. “If that doesn’t strike at the heart of human dignity, I don’t know what does.”
