Man freed by DNA testing after 27 years in prison رجل يحررها اختبار الحمض النووى بعد 27 عاما في السجن
AP | A Dallas man who spent more than 27 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit was freed Tuesday, after being incarcerated longer than any other wrongfully convicted US inmate cleared by DNA testing. أ ب | أ دالاس من رجل امضى اكثر من 27 عاما في السجن لجريمه قتل وقال انه لم ترتكب اطلق سراحه يوم الثلاثاء ، بعد ان يسجن مدة اطول من اى سجين ادينوا خطأ من دولارات الولايات المتحدة من الالغام بحلول اختبار الحمض النووى.
James Lee Woodard stepped out of the courtroom and raised his arms to a throng of photographers. جيمس لي وودارد خرج من قاعة المحكمه ورفع ذراعيه الى حشد من المصورين. Supporters and other people gathered outside the court erupted in applause. وغيرها من أنصار تجمعوا خارج المحكمه اندلعت في التصفيق.
“No words can express what a tragic story yours is,” state District Judge Mark Stoltz told Woodard at a brief hearing before his release. "لا توجد كلمات يمكن ان تعبر عن قصة ماساويه ما هو لك ،" الدولة قاضي محكمة المقاطعه مارك stoltz قال وودارد في جلسة استماع امام وجيزة من اطلاقه.
Woodard, cleared of the 1980 murder of his girlfriend, became the 18th person in Dallas County to have his conviction cast aside. وودارد ، وتطهيرها من عام 1980 قتل صديقته ، وأصبحت الثامن عشر شخص في مقاطعة دالاس لادانته بينما سقط. Woodard was sentenced to life in prison in July 1981 for the murder of a 21-year-old Dallas woman found raped and strangled near the banks of the Trinity River. وودارد حكم عليه الحياة في السجن في تموز / يولية 1981 لاغتيال احد من العمر 21 عاما دالاس امراة للاغتصاب والخنق وجدت بالقرب من ضفاف نهر الثالوث.
He was convicted primarily on the basis of testimony from two eyewitnesses, said Natalie Roetzel, the executive director of the Innocence Project of Texas. وقد ادين في المقام الاول على اساس افادة اثنين من شهود عيان ، قالت ناتالي roetzel ، المدير التنفيذي للمشروع البراءه من ولاية تكساس. One has since recanted in an affidavit. ومنذ ذلك الحين واحدة recanted في شهادة خطية. “On the first day he was arrested, he told the world he was innocent … and nobody listened,” Jeff Blackburn, chief counsel for the Innocence Project of Texas, said during Tuesday’s hearing. He even stopped attending his parole hearings because gaining his release would have meant confessing to a crime he didn’t do. حتى انه توقف المشروط له حضور جلسات الاستماع لان الحصول على اطلاق سراحه من شانه ان يعني الاعتراف جريمه لأنه لم يفعل.
“It says a lot about your character that you were more interested in the truth than your freedom,” the judge told Woodard after making his ruling. "تقول الكثير عن الطابع الخاص بك ان كنت أكثر اهتماما في الحقيقة من حرية الخاص بك ،" قال القاضي وودارد ، بعد اتخاذ قراره.
Blackburn and prosecutors hailed Tuesday’s hearing as a landmark moment of frequent adversaries working together. بلاكبيرن والمدعين العامين واشاد جلسة استماع يوم الثلاثاء باعتباره علامة لحظة العمل معا من كثرة الاعداء.
Since the DNA evidence was tied to rape and Woodard was convicted of murder, Innocence Project attorneys had to prove that the same person committed both crimes. منذ ادلة الحمض النووي تعادل للاغتصاب وكان وودارد ادينوا بتهمة القتل ، وكان وكلاء مشروع البراءه لنفسه ان يثبت ان الشخص قد ارتكب كل الجرائم. They said they couldn’t have done that without access to evidence provided by Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins’ office. وقالوا انهم لا يمكن ان يكون فعل ذلك دون الحصول على الادله التي قدمها المدعي العام مقاطعة دالاس كريغ واتكينز مكتب.
“You’ve got to have very good lawyers with a lot of experience and skill … working on both ends of this case, hard,” Blackburn said. "كنت قد وصلت الى المحامين جيدة مع الكثير من خبرة ومهاره… تعمل على طرفي هذه الحاله ، من الصعب ،" قال بلاكبيرن. “And you’ve also got to have government power behind what you do.” "وكنت قد حصلت على سلطة الحكومة وراء ما تقوم به."
Under Watkins, Dallas County has a program supervised by the Innocence Project of Texas that is reviewing hundreds of cases of convicts who have requested DNA testing to prove their innocence. في اطار اتكينز ، دالاس المقاطعه برنامج تشرف عليه والبراءه من المشروع هو اعادة النظر في ولاية تكساس ان مئات من حالات المحكومين وقد طلبت من اختبار الحمض النووي لاثبات براءتهم.

“I saw the human side of it, and seeing the human said of it just gives you more courage to advocate for issues like this,” said Watkins, who had breakfast with Woodard on Tuesday morning. Woodard said his family was “small and scattered,” although he pointed out a niece in the courtroom. وقال وودارد اسرته "صغيرة ومتناثره ،" على الرغم من واشار الى ابنة الاخت في قاعة المحكمه. He said his biggest regret was not being with his mother when she died. وقال صاحب اكبر الاسف لا يجري مع أمه عندما توفيت.
“I can tell you what I’d like to do first: breathe fresh, free air,” Woodard said during a news conference in the courtroom after the hearing. "انا لا اعرف ما يمكن ان يتوقعوه. I haven’t been in Dallas since buses were blue.” أنا لم تكن في دالاس حيث ان الحافلات الزرقاء ".
