I was recently stopped by Homeland Security as I was returning from a trip to Syria. كنت توقفت خلال الفترة الاخيرة من قبل الامن الداخلى بينما كنت عائدا من رحلة الى سوريا. What I saw in the hours that followed shocked and disturbed me. ان ما رأيته في الساعات التي تلت ذلك بصدمة وقلق لي.

After 28 hours of traveling, I had settled into a hazy awareness that this was the last, most familiar leg of a long journey. بعد 28 ساعة من السفر ، كنت قد استقر في الوعي خافت ان هذه هى اخر ، اكثر درايه اي مرحلة من مراحل رحلة طويلة. I exchanged friendly words with the Homeland Security official who was recording my name in his computer. انا تبادل عبارات الود مع الوطن وكان مسؤول امني من تسجيل اسمي في جهاز الحاسوب الخاص به. There was one British tourist in the group. وكان هناك واحد السائح البريطاني في المجموعة. Paul (also not his real name) was traveling with three friends who had passed through customs soon after their plane landed and were waiting for him on the other side of the metal barrier; he suspected he had been detained because of his dark skin. بول (ايضا لا اسمه الحقيقي) كانت تسير مع ثلاثة اصدقاء من الجمارك قد مرت في وقت قريب بعد هبوط الطائرة وكانت في انتظاره على الجانب الآخر من الحاجز المعدني ؛ يشتبه في انه كان قد اعتقل بسبب نشاطه في الظلام الجلد. The guard who had been picking his molars for hours quietly mispronounced the names of people whose turn it was to be questioned, muttering each surname three times and then moving on. الحرس قبض على من كان له الاضراس لساعات بهدوء مخطا تلفظ اسماء الاشخاص الذين كان بدوره ان يجري استجوابه ، تمتمه كل اللقب ثلاث مرات وبعد ذلك الانتقال. When he called Omar from City College to his desk, I moved closer to hear the interview. عندما دعا الى عمر من كلية سيتي الى مكتبه ، وأنا اقترب من الاستماع الى المقابلة. “Where did you go?” the officer asked. "الى اين ذهبت؟" طلب الضابط. “What is your address in the United States? "ما هو عنوانك في الولايات المتحدة؟ Is your brother here illegally? هو أخوك هنا بصورة غير قانونيه؟ Do you support Hezbollah? هل انت مع حزب الله؟ What do you think of Hezbollah in general? ما هو رأيك في حزب الله في العام؟ How do you pay for your life here? كيف تدفع عن حياتك هنا؟ How many people live with you? كيف يعيش كثير من الناس معكم؟ Are you sure it’s just you and your brother? هل انت متأكد من انه فقط أنت وأخوك؟ Who are your friends?” Omar answered respectfully and emphatically; he was then asked to wait by the side of the desk, from which he was ushered toward one of the rooms. من هم أصدقاؤك؟ "عمر الاجابه بكل احترام وبالتأكيد انه كان يطلب في ذلك الحين الى الانتظار من جانب الى جانب المكتب ، والتي كان من فتح الباب في اتجاه واحد من الغرف.

After four hours, I finally demanded to speak to the guards’ supervisor, and he was called down. وبعد اربع ساعات ، واخيرا طالب ان يتحدث الى وحراس مشرف ، وقال انه دعا الى اسفل. I asked if the detainees could file a formal complaint. سألت اذا كان ملف المعتقلين يمكن ان شكوى رسمية. He said there were complaint forms (which, in English and Spanish, direct one to the Department of Homeland Security’s Web site, where one must enter extensive personal information in order to file a “Trip Summary”) but initially refused to hand them out or to give me his telephone number. وقال : كانت هناك شكوى من أشكال (التي ، باللغتين الانكليزيه والاسبانيه ، واحدة مباشرة الى وزارة الامن الوطنى موقع ، حيث يجب ان تدخل على نطاق واسع في المعلومات الشخصيه من اجل رفع قضية "رحلة الموجز") ولكنه رفض في البداية لتسليمها او ان يعطيني رقم هاتفه. “The Department of Homeland Security is understaffed, underfunded, and I have men here who are doing 14-hour days.” He tried to intimidate me when I wrote down his name — “So, you’re writing down our names. "وزارة الامن الوطني هو نقص التمويل الكافي ، وانا هنا من الرجال هي 14 ساعة عمل يوما." حاول تخويف لي عندما كتبت اسفل اسمه -- "حتى انت والكتابة لدينا اسماء. A large crowd began to gather. بدأ حشد كبير لجمع. Everyone wanted to voice complaints. والجميع يريد ان صوت الشكاوى. I explained to the supervisor that his guards had been making people afraid. واوضحت ان المشرف على حراسة قد جعل الناس يخشون. He flipped through the green files, tossing the American passports to the front of the pile. وقال انه مقلب من خلال ملفات الاخضر ، القذف جوازات السفر الاميركية الى واجهة الكومه. “You should have gone first, before these people. "يجب عليك ان ذهبت اولا ، وقبل هؤلاء الناس. I reassured my Homeland Security interrogator that I did not make any connections with Hezbollah or with anyone I knew to be associated with such an organization. انا مطمءنه الى وطني الامن مستجوب ان الاول لم يقدم اي اتصالات مع حزب الله او مع اي شخص وكنت اعرف ان يرتبط مع منظمة من هذا القبيل. I am not a member of any terrorist group. وأنا لست عضوا في أي جماعة إرهابية. In fact, my visit to Syria had been so apolitical and touristy that I felt an embarrassing affinity with the pastel-shirted families waiting by the Air France baggage carousels in the distance, whom I knew I would eventually join. في الواقع ، والزيارة التي قمت بها الى سوريا كان ذلك غير سياسي والسياحيه التي شعرت حرج ألفة مع الباستيل - shirted الاسر تنتظر من جانب فرنسا الامتعه الجوية carousels في المسافة ، وكنت اعرف منهم في نهاية المطاف اود ان تنضم اليها.

It was shocking that briefly standing up to someone overseeing an abuse of civil rights — in JFK airport, in the United States, where we supposedly have laws and a democratic judicial system — could be perceived as heroic. ومن المروع ان بايجاز الوقوف الى شخص الاشراف على اساءة لاستعمال الحقوق المدنيه -- فى مطار جون ف. كينيدي المطار ، في الولايات المتحدة ، حيث من المفترض اننا لديها قوانين وديمقراطيه النظام القضائي -- يمكن ان ينظر اليه بوصفه البطل. I had nothing to lose, but the other people being detained had everything to lose. الاول ولم يعد هناك ما اخسره ، ولكن اشخاص اخرين محتجزين قد يخسر كل شيء.

In the past five years I have worked for human rights and refugee advocacy organizations in Serbia, Russia and Croatia, including the International Rescue Committee and USAID. فى السنوات الخمس الماضية عملت لحقوق الانسان واللاجئين والمنظمات العاملة في مجال الدفاع في صربيا وروسيا وكرواتيا ، بما فيها لجنة الانقاذ الدولية والوكالة الامريكية للتنمية الدولية.
