Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption drive takes a great leap forward

Upon becoming general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 2012, President Xi Jinping put forward a frank assessment that endemic corruption among party elites and cadres threatens to delegitimize the reform process and undermine the CPC’s rule. Xi announced a broad anti-corruption campaign and vowed that the party’s graft watchdog would be“striking tigers and flies at the same time” – a signal that both prominent officials and grassroots cadres would be equally held accountable.

In the two years since the anti-corruption campaign began, it has proven to be the longest reaching and most impactful clampdown effort since the reform era began in 1978. Anti-graft inspectors have launched thousands of investigations, ending the political careers of hundreds of officials engaged in bribery, embezzlement and acquiring illicit funds through land deals, official infrastructure projects and land development. The scope of the anti-corruption efforts has not spared those in the CPC’s inner circle, creating anxiety within the party.

Zhou Yongkang, one of China’s most powerful men until his retirement in 2012, has been the most prominent official probed for abuses of power. During his tenure as the head of the CPC’s political and legislative affairs committee, Zhou’s only superiors were the president and prime minister. He was a member of the Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) and oversaw the state’s internal security, judicial system, law enforcement, and paramilitary operations, operating with a larger budget than China’s military.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) – the party’s formidable anti-corruption agency – has also detained reputable officials known to be Zhou’s protégés and opened investigations into the extraordinary wealth of his family members. It is widely believed that the long delays in announcing the probe against Zhou were due to huge inner-party resistance, indicating that Xi engaged enormous political capital in order to create conditions for the investigation.

Strongest Antiwar Statement Yet from a Congressional Candidate

In this local TV news interview (video), we see Virginia Fifth District Democratic nominee for Congress Lawrence Gaughan say, "We need to get back to the Constitution on the issue of war, and I will never authorize the executive to use force when there is no direct or imminent threat to our national security here on our soil."

I'm not aware of a stronger statement from any candidate for Congress.

Virginia's Fifth District is currently misrepresented by Republican Robert Hurt who on Thursday voted against blocking funds for a new war on Iraq:

Lee (D-CA)- Amendment No. 31 - Prohibits funds from being used to conduct combat operations in Iraq. – REJECTED 165 – 250

Twice:

Lee (D-CA)- Amendment No. 33 - Prohibits funds from being used pursuant to the Authorization for Use of Military Force against Iraq Resolution of 2002. – REJECTED 182 – 231

Prior to Hurt, VA-05 was misrepresented by Democrat Tom Perriello, an enthusiastic warmonger who recently moved to the State Department from the Center for American Progress, which is advocating for missile strikes on Iraq.

Prior to Perriello, this district was embarrassed and disgraced by Democrat turned Republican Virgil Goode.

When people voted for Perriello (and Obama) in 2008, many blindly followed a party line, and many fantasized that they were electing an anti-war representative.

Many imagined Hurt was hopeless in this regard, although he did prove willing in the end to oppose missile strikes into Syria.

Now, as it happens, there appears to be an opportunity to vote for someone who is actually running on an antiwar platform, not just a platform of being from a different party than Bush and Cheney.  And what a platform!

It's quite common to say you'll only back wars when "U.S. national interests are at stake" or when the U.S. is threatened, but those phrases can usually be defined to mean anything at all, including U.S. troops halfway around the globe getting into a shoot out.  That's not what Gaughan has said.  He has said there must be a threat to the United States in the United States.  That's a rejection of at least the past 70 years of U.S. war making.

It's also common to claim that one will take a decent position against wars if asked by the President.  That's not what Gaughan has said.  He has said that he will abide by the Constitution, which does not allow presidents to make wars, and that he will not permit the executive to wage wars except under the narrow circumstances described.

We're not going to find better than this around here for a long, long time to come, and I doubt anybody can find better elsewhere in the country.

I therefore suggest that wherever you live, you consider supporting putting this man in Congress.

Anti-Russian Media Wars

Anti-Russian Media Wars

by Stephen Lendman

Welcome to Cold War 2.0. The first one never ended. Since Soviet Russia's 1991 dissolution, Western policy remained hard-wired in place.

Putin defends Russian sovereignty. He opposes US imperial lawlessness. Washington considers him public enemy number one. At stake is world peace.

Russia bashing is intense. It rages daily. It exceeds the worst of Soviet era levels.

Daily attacks reinvented the Evil Empire. It's back to the future. It doesn't surprise. Media scoundrels march in lockstep with US imperial lawlessness. It's longstanding policy.

Propagandists masquerade as journalists. Managed news misinformation substitutes for truth and full disclosure. Readers and viewers are systematically lied to. Mind manipulation works this way.

Neocons infest Washington. They hugely influence policy. The Liz Wahl affair highlights to what lengths they'll go. More on this below.

Putin and Obama are geopolitical opposites. They're world's apart. A previous article explained.

Putin supports peace and stability. Obama wages one war after another.

Putin affirms UN Charter and other rule of law principles. Obama ignores them. He claims a divine right to pursue unchallenged hegemony. He does it belligerently.

Putin believes nation-state sovereignty is inviolable. Obama wants pro-Western puppet governments replacing independent ones.

Washington wants Boris Yeltsin reinvented. He presided over Russia's lost decade.

He let 80% of Russian farmers go bankrupt. He closed 70,000 state factories. He presided over an unemployment epidemic.

Half or more of ordinary Russians became impoverished. A permanent underclass was created. Crime, suicides, mortality, alcoholism, drug abuse, and HIV/AIDS soared to intolerable levels.

So-called "shock therapy" (aka force-fed austerity) produced economic genocide. GDP plunged 50%. Life expectancy fell.

Democratic freedoms died. An oligarch class accumulated enormous wealth. Western interests profited. They did so at the expense of millions of exploited Russians.

Yeltsin let corruption and criminality flourish. One scandal followed others. Grand theft became sport. So did money laundering. Billions in stolen wealth were secreted in Western banks or offshore tax havens.

Former Nezavisimaia Gazeta editor Vitalii Tret'iakov wrote earlier:

"(F)or the greater part of his presidency, Yeltsin slept, drank, was ill, relaxed, didn't show his face before the people and simply did nothing."

"Despised by the majority of (Russians, he'll) go down in history as the first president of Russia, having corrupted (the country) to the breaking point, not by his virtues and or by his defects, but rather by his dullness, primitiveness, and unbridled power lust of a hooligan."

Western governments loved him. So did media scoundrels. They praised his "democratic" change. He presided over free market gangsterism.

He created appalling human misery. Another generation or more may be needed to recover.

Putin's Russia is back. He's proud and re-assertive. He's not about to roll over for Washington. He's on the right side of history. He defends Russian sovereignty.

He does so responsibly. He's vilified for doing it. Daily attacks malign him. They're intense. They're vicious. They're merciless. They're unconscionable.

He's called a Russian strongman. Hillary Clinton outrageously compared him to Hitler. She did so disgracefully. Others take full advantage to vilify him.

RT International (formerly Russia Today) provides real news and information. It does so responsibly.

It airs what viewers most need to know. It's a vital service. It's an antidote to Western media propaganda.

RT America is part of its network. It's based in Washington. It includes New York, Los Angeles and Miami studios.

Former news presenter Liz Wahl became a cause celebre. She disgraced herself. She lost professional credibility.

She's geopolitically mindless. She swallows Western propaganda irresponsibly.

She sold out. She did so perhaps for benefits derived. She resigned on air. "It actually makes me feel sick that I worked here," she said.

"I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin."

"I'm proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth, and that is why, after this newscast, I'm resigning."

RT responded professionally, saying:

"When a journalist disagrees with the editorial position of his or her organization, the usual course of action is to address those grievances with the editor, and, if they cannot be resolved, to quit like a professional."

"But when someone makes a big public show of a personal decision, it is nothing more than a self-promotional stunt."

It's that and much more. It's betrayal. It's supporting wrong over right. Wahl got feature air time on US cable channels.

They embraced her. They took full advantage of her Russia bashing. It's standard scoundrel media practice.

Official policy mandates misinformation, demagoguery, warmongering and junk food news. What viewers and readers most need to know is suppressed.

Wahl apparently prefers presstitution to real news. Whoring pays well. Maybe she's discussing new employment. RT viewers won't miss her.

The Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI) is the Project for the New American Century's (PNAC) current incarnation. It's neoconservative and then some. It's ideologically over-the-top.

It's militantly pro-war. It deplores peace. It supports US imperial lawlessness. It does so shamelessly.

James Kirchick is an FPI fellow. He's based in Washington. He's a former US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty propagandist.

He performs similar services for FPI. He buries truth. He lies for power. He conspired with Liz Wahl. He did so beginning last August. FPI was involved. What happened on-air was carefully orchestrated.

Twenty minutes before Wahl's resignation, FPI twittered: "#WordOnTheStreet says that something big might happen on RT in about 20 - 25 minutes."

"Tune in RT now," it added. "The#WordOnTheStreet says it'll be worth your while."

At 5.26PM as Wahl quit, FPI twittered: "RT Anchor RESIGNS ON AIR. She 'cannot be part of a network that whitewashes the actions of Putin.' "

FPI tweets before and coincidentally with Wahl's resignation suggests carefully orchestrated complicity.

Around an hour daily, The Daily Beast published Kirchick's article headlined "Exclusive: RT Anchor Liz Wahl Explains Why She Quit," saying:

She "made Vladimir Putin's enemies list.." Her "announcement was stunning." It was pre-planned. It was carefully choreographed. It was straight from FPI's playbook.

Kirchick called her stunt "a very brave thing…Hopefully (she'll) inspire a wave of defections from Putin TV," he added.

On March 19, Max Blumenthal and Rania Khalek headlined their Truthdig article "How Cold War-Hungry Neocons Managed RT Anchor Liz Wahl's Resignation," saying:

Her on-air stunt made her "one of the most famous unemployed people in America." CNN, Fox News and MSNBC took full advantage. They jumped at a chance to interview her.

BuzzFeed is a social news and entertainment web site. It's been sued for plagiarism. It's political views are neoconservative. Credibility isn't its long suit.

Rosie Gray is one of its contributors. On March 13, she headlined "How the Truth Is Made at Russia Today."

It's RT International (or RT.com). Russia Today is its former name. Gray's headline was incorrect. What followed was compromised.

She lied claiming Russia invaded Crimea. No invasion occurred. She regurgitated Western propaganda. She embellished it her own way. She substituted rubbish for accuracy.

She bashed RT irresponsibly. She lied claiming it "produc(es) Russian propaganda." Apparently she's so brainwashed by managed news misinformation, she doesn't recognize legitimate reporting when she hears it.

According to Blumenthal and Khalek, "a cadre of neoconservatives was celebrating a public relations coup."

"Desperate to revive the Cold War, head off further cuts to the defense budget, and restore the legitimacy they lost in the ruins of Iraq, the tight knit group of neoconservative writers and stewards had opened up a new PR front through Wahl's resignation."

Complicit media scoundrels helped. Featuring Wahl played right into neocon strategy. It worked without "neoconservative fingerprints."

Inflammatory reporting escalates East/West tensions. Current RT employees take issue with Wahl.

Blumenthal and Khalek said six former colleagues call her "an apolitical, deeply disgruntled employee seeking an exit strategy from a job where, sources say, she was disciplined for unprofessional behavior and had been demoted."

One employee said she "always (was) apolitical and without any clear principles. She didn't talk about any politics outside of work."

Another said she rarely objected to RT's news coverage. "We do have editorial meetings in the morning to bring up questions and comments or concerns, an opportunity Liz rarely took," the employee said.

Before joining RT, she interned for Fox News host Sean Hannity. He's ideologically compromised and then some.

Last spring, said Blumenthal and Khalek, "Wahl was suspended for two weeks without pay and then demoted from anchor to correspondent after a series of outbursts in the office."

"She had become disgruntled about her salary, the sources said, then began complaining that she was receiving insufficient assistance from producers in writing her monologues."

She " 'wasn’t disgruntled about anything editorially. It was entirely about payment,'  one ex-colleague remarked."

"Wahl expressed her outrage at co-workers, often berating them, according to her former colleagues, and by 'screaming' at management."

"She was ultimately suspended without pay for her unprofessional behavior, they told us, and demoted from anchor to correspondent until her duties were restored this past January."

Last year, she told a former colleague she was "approached by an unnamed person who wanted her to help undermine RT," said Blumenthal and Khalek.

She took full advantage of Ukraine's crisis. She acted irresponsibly. She's on the wrong side of history.

US cable channels are politically compromised. Propaganda substitutes for real news and information. Perhaps employment awaits Wahl at one of them. Who said betrayal doesn't pay.

‘Winds Of War’ Russia Moves Anti-Ship Missiles To Crimea In Response To US Guided-Missile...

By Susan Duclos

Russia has countered the Obama administrations attempt to interfere, once again, in the Ukraine. The US decided to move guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun into the Black Sea, and Russia has made their next move by deploying a Bastion anti-ship missile system in Sevastopol, according to Joseph Watson at InfoWars.

“The system is designed for the destruction of various surface ships from an enemy’s landing squadrons, convoys, carrier strike groups, as well as single vessels and land-based radiocontrast targets in conditions of intensive fire and electronic countermeasures. The system uses the P-800 Yakhont (SS-N-26) anti-ship cruise missile and has a maximum range of 300 km,” states a separate report on a Vietnamese military website.

Tensions are high and with the buildup of military force and world leaders with nuclear weapons, pound their chests and counter move after move, threats issued and battle lines being drawn, one wrong move, one over-the-top insult or sanction or even an accident could be construed as a declaration of war and BOOM, world war III begins.

Via the video details from Paul Begley "Russia seems to 2 steps ahead of every American Military move."

Yes, that is what happens when you pit a community organizer (Obama) against a KGB war expert (Putin).

Phil Donahue on His 2003 Firing From MSNBC, When Liberal Network Couldn’t Tolerate Antiwar...

In 2003, the legendary television host Phil Donahue was fired from his prime-time MSNBC talk show during the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The problem was not Donahue’s ratings, but rather his views: An internal MSNBC memo warned Donahue was a "difficult public face for NBC in a time of war," providing "a home for the liberal antiwar agenda at the same time that our competitors are waving the flag at every opportunity." Donahue joins us to look back on his firing 10 years later. "They were terrified of the antiwar voice," Donahue says.

TRANSCRIPT:

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Phil, I’d like to bring in another subject in terms of this whole issue, the—what happened to you, directly, as a host on MSNBC in the midst of the run-up to the war, and the responsibilities of the press in America and its—the mea culpas that have rarely been uttered by the pundits and by the journalists over what the American press did in the run-up to war.

PHIL DONAHUE: Well, I think what happened to me, the biggest lesson, I think, is the—how corporate media shapes our opinions and our coverage. This was a decision—my decision—the decision to release me came from far above. This was not an assistant program director who decided to separate me from MSNBC. They were terrified of the antiwar voice. And that is not an overstatement. Antiwar voices were not popular. And if you’re General Electric, you certainly don’t want an antiwar voice on a cable channel that you own; Donald Rumsfeld is your biggest customer. So, by the way, I had to have two conservatives on for every liberal. I could have Richard Perle on alone, but I couldn’t have Dennis Kucinich on alone. I was considered two liberals. It really is funny almost, when you look back on how—how the management was just frozen by the antiwar voice. We were scolds. We weren’t patriotic. American people disagreed with us. And we weren’t good for business.

AMY GOODMAN: You know, I had this unusual experience, Phil, in July of 2006. It was the 10th anniversary of MSNBC, and I was invited on Hardball by Chris Matthews to celebrate the 10th anniversary. I think first Brian Williams was on the show, and then the Israeli ambassador, and then I was on the show. And we were standing outside 30 Rock. It was a big deal. All the execs were on the top floor of 30 Rock, and they were all about to have a big party. And we were just coming out of a commercial.

AMY GOODMAN: I want to congratulate you, Chris, on 10 years of MSNBC, but I wish standing with you was Phil Donahue. He shouldn’t have been fired for expressing an antiwar point of view on the eve of the election. His point of view and the people brought on were also important.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: I don’t know what the reasons were, but I doubt it was that.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, we have the MS—the NBC memo, that was a secret memo—

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Oh, OK, good.

AMY GOODMAN: —that came out, that said they didn’t want him to be the face of this network, an antiwar face, at a time when the other networks were waving the flag.

MICHAEL SMERCONISH: Could I answer the question? I’d love to answer that question.

AMY GOODMAN: Phil Donahue is a great patriot.

AMY GOODMAN: I said there, Phil, you were a great patriot. We did have the NBC memo, the secret memo that said they didn’t want their flagship show to be you, when the other networks were waving the American flag.

PHIL DONAHUE: That’s what it said. And, by the way, that memo was written by a Republican focus group, a Republican counseling group that took the focus group and that revealed that most of the people in the focus group didn’t like me. But I saw that, Amy.

AMY GOODMAN: And yet, you were the most popular show.

PHIL DONAHUE: Well, often we led the night for the—nobody burned the town down on MSNBC, including me. Fox just ran away with the ratings and continues to enjoy that success.

AMY GOODMAN: Were you watching MSNBC that night?

PHIL DONAHUE: I did. I saw it. And I called the kids. I said, "Hey!" I’m not sure I did it soon enough. But I certainly was grateful for—I mean, I needed the pat on the back at the time.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And, Phil, the irony that MSNBC now is supposedly this liberal—

PHIL DONAHUE: It’s amazing, really.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: —the liberal network now?

PHIL DONAHUE: Yeah.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: You wonder, though, if another—if another move to war came, how liberal it would remain.

PHIL DONAHUE: Well, you know, the coin of the realm is the size of the audience. It’s important to see this. When a broadcasting executive gets out of bed in the morning, before his foot hits the floor, his thoughts are ratings. "What are my ratings?" Not unlike Wall Street people, who get their—and CEOs, their first thought is the price of their stock. So, you know, what—and I was replaced by Michael Savage. So there was a desperate need to get numbers.

AMY GOODMAN: Who is one of the most conservative, and that’s giving conservatives a bad name.

PHIL DONAHUE: This was the decision of—

AMY GOODMAN: Michael Savage lived up to his last name.

PHIL DONAHUE: And this was a decision by higher-ups at General Electric and NBC.

AMY GOODMAN: Tomas, you wanted to say something here. Let me go to a break, and then we’re going to come back, as we wrap up this broadcast. We’re talking to Phil Donahue and Tomas Young, Iraq War veteran, age 33—says he will end his life in the next few months, dealing with the pain of war—and his wife, Claudia Cuellar. We’ll be back in a minute.

Iraq, The Illegal War, Ten Years On: Curbing the Rights of Antiwar Activists

peace4

It is sad that well-known peace campaigners should drop below the radar, not just of the politicians who hate them, but of the so-called peace campaigners who idolised them when they were still there.  One such man, who dedicated the last 10 years of his life to confronting the UK Parliament with their outrageous decision to invade Iraq, was Brian Haw.

As a committed Christian and a father, and angered by the sanctions the West had imposed on Iraq that resulted in the tragic and avoidable deaths of too many Iraqi children, Brian left his home and arrived in London.  More particularly, he arrived in Parliament Square, where he camped at the side of the road facing the Houses of Parliament.  Always, for those of us who continued to protest about the invasion of Iraq and the awful damage our actions were doing to that nation, Brian was a figurehead, an inspiration.  Few of us could claim his courage, his determination and his perseverance.

For nearly ten years he stayed – night after night of sleeping on the pavement, in all weathers and with little protection.  Nothing the police or Parliament did could break him and make him move.  Brian’s protest caused them no end of problems as he and his anti-war placards and banners were a constant reminder of all the lies that were told in the run up to the attack on Iraq in 2003 and continued to be told to justify the invasion.  Members of Parliament had to pass his huge collection of displays and peace messages every time they went in and out of the Parliament.

In their haste to be rid of this ‘turbulent priest’ of a campaigner, who harangued MPs daily with his megaphone as they went into the august halls of Westminster, reminding them of their ghastly error in backing up Tony Blair and his eagerness to invade Iraq, the then Home Secretary David Blunkett introduced the bill SOCPA (Serious Organized Crime and Police Act 2005) which was aimed at removing Brian by banning protests within 1 km (about half a mile) of Parliament without police permission.  This came into effect on 1 August 2005.  But where else should we protest for peace if not outside the place that had rubber-stamped Blair’s desire to illegally attack Iraq?

Comedian Mark Thomas headed an action to keep protest going within the legal 1 km. He wanted to demonstrate how very ludicrous this ban was.  To quote Mark: “The point is simply that if one person with a banner can be deemed to be a protester by the police and they need to get a licence six days in advance to enter the designated zone, then we have reached a state of absurdity.” And it is true if hardly believable that one woman in Parliament Square was threatened with arrest for having an iced cake with ‘Peace’ written on it.  On certain days individual protestors, who had each registered their very individual protests with the police (including, for instance, the right to jump off Westminster Bridge) held their protests within the designated zone.  It made the new law look very stupid indeed.

But so hasty had Parliament’s action been in creating this law that when it was challenged, they discovered that the one person they had failed to ban was Haw himself!  So he stayed – and stayed.  For some time he was alone, although visited (and supported) by many well-wishers.  He became a tourist attraction.  MPs complained that they could not properly debate in the chamber because of the noise of his megaphone protest in the Square outside – presumably the constant traffic noise complete with police and ambulance sirens is conducive to a good debate!

In May 2006 his much-photographed display of placards and banners was reduced from 40 metres to just 3 metres by a night raid of some 78 police (which cost a staggering £27,000).  Not so oddly, this happened within hours of artist Mark Wallinger showing two curators from the Tate Gallery Brian’s display and announcing he wanted to recreate it for an exhibition.  Never the less, Mark had his way and the exhibition, State Britain, ran at the Tate from January to August 2007.

Brian continued to protest with his truncated display despite numerous arrests and assaults.  He was on crutches for his last years in the Square – the result of the not-so-gentle arrest techniques of the famed London Bobby.  He died of cancer in June 2011 and the world is a poorer place.

Brian was joined in December 2005 by Melbourne-born Barbara Tucker.  While Brian had some legal authority to stay there, Barbara didn’t, which has meant that she has been arrested an astonishing 47 times while in the square, usually on a charge of `unauthorized demonstration`.  When Brian died she nobly carried on.  She has served two short spells in Holloway prison as well as suffering constant harassment from police, heritage wardens and passing rowdies.

Until January 2012 she had a tent but that was confiscated under the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act (PRSA).  After that she sat in a chair on the pavement trying to sleep under a large green umbrella wrapped up in multiple layers of clothing.  She has slept in the open for over a year now without a tent and has been treated for exposure.  In the hope of getting her confiscated tent back, Barbara took the decision to go on hunger strike, starting on December 27th 2012.

While Brian managed to achieve some media recognition for his stance, Barbara has had little to none.  The latest reference I can find to her hunger strike dates from January 10th.  She and her colleague Neil Kerslake are no longer in the Square and have not been seen for some weeks – disappeared, tidied away perhaps, so as to make the 10th anniversary of the invasion a little less contentious.

One day maybe, when the world stops fighting needless, illegal and cruel wars, people will finally give these dedicated campaigners they recognition they deserve.  I’d like to see a statue of Brian in Parliament Square, confronting Westminster and challenging its dishonesty and hypocrisy as he did for so many cold hard years.  Until then, those of us who still call ourselves peace campaigners should at least make the effort to remember how much he once meant to us all.  Parliament may not like dissenters – I for one do.

China warns US over anti-Iran sanctions

China has warned that the US sanctions recently imposed against certain Chinese entities over their alleged trading with Iran will harm Beijing’s relations with Washington, urging the US to “correct its mistaken policy.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement on Monday that the US measure "seriously violates the norms of international relations and harms China's interests."

"China urges the United States to immediately correct its mistaken policy and revoke these irrational sanctions toward the relevant companies and individuals and cease taking actions that harm China's interests and China-US relations," the statement further read.

The United States on Monday imposed sanctions on a Chinese businessman and a number of firms over the allegation that they have sold Iran items banned under the US Arms Control Act and its Export Administration Act.

According to a notice published on the US Federal Register website, the sanctions took effect on February 5.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Over the false allegation, Washington and the European Union have imposed several rounds of illegal unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran refutes the allegation and argues that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The latest US sanctions, announced on February 5, target Iranian oil revenues.

February 15th 2003 saw the largest protest in British history. Like millions of others across the world, the British public said no to the invasion of Iraq. Their government ignored them.So two million people marched on Britain’s cities, supported by millions more. But Tony Blair still took this country to war on what’s now apparent was flawed, or even fraudulent, intelligence. Since then Britain, much like the US, has entered an era of continuous warfare.Tariq Ali, Writer / Filmmaker“It pains me when good people, especially in the United States, who were hostile to wars when Bush was waging them, become passive when Obama wages them.Hassan GhaniToday, in a more complex world, and with a so called war on terror that has spread to many more fronts, Britain’s anti-war movement is taking stock.Tariq Ali, Writer / Filmmaker“Effectively what we noticed in the United States today is imperial continuity. More drone attacks on Pakistan and Afghanistan and Yemen and Somalia under Obama than there were under Bush. The President of the United States has now the power, legal power, to order the execution of any American citizen, leave alone citizens from the rest of the world. That is the world we live in.”Hassan GhaniSo despite boasting the support of millions, has the anti-war movement essentially failed in its objectives of stopping war, or even affecting change in foreign policy.Jeremy Corbyn“I think we did mobilize a lot of people who became very well educated as a result of it. I think we did probably do a lot to stop any direct attack taking place on Iran at that time, or indeed since that time. Of course we didn’t succeed in stopping the wars, but that’s not a reason to go away, it’s every reason to redouble our efforts and say to people ‘there is a different alternative way of doing things’. We don’t have to arm ourselves to the teeth, we don’t have to have global military reach, we don’t have to steal other people’s raw materials and resources, we don’t have to run round the world on behalf of corporate entities. We can instead be a force for moral good in the world by respecting international law and seeking to relate to people rather than the way we’ve increasingly got involved in wars largely on behalf of the United States.I can’t promise success, but I can say: doing nothing is not an option.”Hassan GhaniIt is true however, that while there is no public appetite for further wars abroad, and opposition to Britain’s ongoing military action in Afghanistan has grown, the numbers at public protests have shrunk in recent years.Owen Jones, Journalist, The Independent“There is certainly that opposition. The reality is that at the same time we’re going through a huge economic crisis where often people’s priorities are bread and butter issues like housing, jobs, and everyday issues. I think Western foreign policy is something most British people are actually concerned about, and they do oppose those interventions, including the occupation of Afghanistan. But at the same time, at the end of the day, if you’re struggling to heat your home or feed your kids, then there are other priorities.”Hassan GhaniPerhaps one of the most effective tools going forward for the anti-war movement is to highlight the link between the cost of wars abroad and cuts in public spending at home, building ties with the UK’s growing anti-austerity movement.Owen Jones, Journalist, The Independent“The government can always afford to shell out money for wars in Afghanistan, but cuts here where they say these services are not affordable. It just shows that actually we should fighting, instead of waging war on other people we should actually be defending our services here instead.”John Rees, Counterfire / Stop the War Coalition“As long as this system shows us the face of war and austerity, we will show in opposition an anti-war movement and an anti-austerity movement, which brings together, in unity, the only kind of forces that working people really have - their strength in numbers and their capacity to organise. That is what this movement has, in the end, always been about. The struggle for success in the working class movement is the struggle for unity. Without unity we cannot win. In unity we can take down the war mongers and the profiteers.”Hassan GhaniThere were also calls to do more to counter the increasing use of drone attacks, which often result in substantial civilian deaths, a tactic which anti-war campaigners argue is counter-productive, and will ultimately increase the risk of terrorism at home.John Rees, Counterfire / Stop the War Coalition“Let’s be clear. The drone wars are about making sure that there are no body bags of American and British and European troops coming back from the theatres of war. That’s what the drone wars are about. Now if they move to drone wars, we move after the drone wars.”Victoria Brittain, Journalist / Writer“What the Obama administration has done, worse than Bush, is sanitised killing. That’s what drones are, that you have men at computers away in America killing people in Pakistan, in Yemen, in Somalia. And the fact that we know, now, that the American President personally sanctifies most of these killings, ticks off the names, including of Americans, I think is an incredibly alienating process. Everybody I know who knows about Yemen and Pakistan says that is creating new terrorists all the time, it would be strange if it wasn’t.”Hassan GhaniSuccessive British governments have denied that UK foreign policy is one of the root causes of terrorism, despite the 2005 London underground train bombers specifically citing it as their motivation.Mohammad Sidique Khan, 7/7 Bomber“Your democratically elected governments continuously perpetrate atrocities against my people all over the world, and your support of them makes you directly responsible.”Hassan GhaniIt later also emerged that intelligence officials had warned of blowback from Iraq prior to the invasion. Also being discussed in London was the fresh push for consolidating western interests in Africa. Activist Explo Nani-Kofi for years oversaw the campaign against proxy wars in Africa, and says today’s conflict in Mali is the result of a bigger picture of decades old western interference in the region, and a scramble to exploit its resources.Explo Nani-Kofi, Kilombo Centre for Civil Society and African Self-Determination, Ghana“Because China was also coming in and trying to give, what appeared to be, more favourable conditions to the African countries, it threatened the West. So the West has to go in to ensure that the control they have over these resources over the years, since the Berlin conference, is not lost.We have to democratise our states, to strengthen the grassroots control on governments and direction of policy. And if we have grassroots organisation control, then we would be able to defend the state.”Hassan GhaniThere were several other issues also under the spotlight, but one central to many of them was the west’s continued support for Israel.Manuel Hassassian, Palestinian Authority’s Rep to UK“We do understand that the crux of the problem in the Middle East today is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and all other problems are transient, they’re not going to stay there, we know that. When is the international community going to understand that they cannot the victimiser and the victim on equal footing, when they talk about this conflict.”Hassan GhaniLooking back at Iraq and 2003, Sami Ramadani opposed the regime of Saddam Hussain. But he also opposed the invasion. Ten years on, he says the US and the UK have left a poisonous legacy behind. And looking forwards, he warns others seeking to overthrow despotic regimes not to allow their struggle to be hijacked by western interests.Sami Ramadani, Senior Lecturer, London Metropolitan University“I was an exile of Saddam’s regime. We struggled against his regime for 35 years of Ba’athist rule. But the question is always posed: would intervention and imperialist backed change bring anything good for the people, would it improve the situation? No. My view was, and the view of most Iraqis overwhelmingly, was no. Saddam’s regime is a terrible dictatorship, but this alternative of backing US-led intervention would bring an even bigger disaster to the Iraqi people. And similarly if that war is to be launched on Iran, and so on. And similarly their attempt to divert the struggle of the Syrian people for democracy into darker channels. So you have a choice, in a sense. You stay opposed to dictatorship, you stay with your people demanding democracy, but if you don’t link that to opposition to imperialist intervention then the struggle will be led into a bind alley.”Hassan Ghani, for the Real News, London.

Baroness Warsi Slams Media For Fuelling Anti-Muslim Hatred

Baroness Warsi will hit out at the media for spreading negative stories about Islam on Thursday, arguing it must share the blame for a rise in hate crimes against Muslims and for "fuelling Islamophobia".

In a speech in London this evening, the minister for faith and communities and senior Foreign Office minister will say there is an "underlying, unfounded mistrust" among many Britons towards Muslims as well as a "misinformed suspicion of people who follow Islam".

Warsi will make the comments at a dinner held by Mama, a new government-backed group dedicated to measuring and monitoring anti-Muslim attacks.

The former Tory chairman will cite recent YouGov polling data that revealed just 23% of those asked thought Islam was not a threat to Western civilization.

"Perhaps most disturbingly, nearly half of people polled thought there would be a clash of civilisations between and Muslims and other Britons,” she will say.

Warsi will also say that early indications are that 50-60 per cent of reported religious hate crimes in 2011 were anti-Muslim.

"Sadly, much of this negative narrative is being perpetuated by certain sections of the media," she will say.

“Lord Justice Leveson’s report event revealed journalists were encouraged to make up stories about Muslims. And concluded that the unbalanced reporting of ethnic minorities was endemic.”

Warsi’s speech comes two years after her infamous "dinner-table test" speech in which she said prejudice against Muslims had become socially acceptable in the UK.

Downing Street distanced itself from the then Tory chairman, claiming it had not cleared the speech before key lines were briefed to the media.

Warsi who lost her job as chairman in the September reshuffle, will defend her 2011 comments and return to the theme, arguing it is her duty to counteract negative perception of Muslims.

“When I said that Islamophobia had ‘passed the dinner table test’ I meant anti-Muslim sentiment had become so socially acceptable, it could be found even in the most civilised of settings,” she will say.

"I got a fair amount of stick for making that statement: There were those who denied the problem existed. There were those who said talking about it was dangerous. But let me tell you what’s really dangerous: It’s when people are treated differently because they hold a different religious belief.”

She will warn Britain is danger of turning a "blind eye" towards discrimination and that "any form of prejudice, bigotry or discrimination is wrong" and "unBritish".

Warsi will add: "An attack on one faith is an attack on all faiths. And an attack on faith is an attack on freedom.

"It’s a matter for everyone who cares about Britain being the modern, equal, fair society that we want it to be. After all, anti-Muslim hatred is a form of prejudice. And there should be no place in Britain for this prejudice."
