Heavy snowfall badly affects UK economy

Recent reports have shown that the UK economy is being dangerously hit with snowfall hazards.

The UK economy is being dangerously hit with the latest heavy snowfall that caused a loss of working days for manufacturers and builders, as well as falls in other major businesses, local media reported.

Richard Dodd from the British Retail Consortium, a body representing the country's major chains, said: "At a time when retailers are already under pressure, bad weather which keeps people from going shopping is very bad news."

It will be revealed this week that the UK’s ailing economy shrank once again in the fourth quarter of 2012 and it is predicted the snowy conditions could now push the first quarter of 2013 into the red.

The hazardous weather conditions across Britain has caused commuters to struggle getting to work, while airlines and train operators were held up with a blanket of snow and ice.

The snow brought about a loss of working days for manufacturers and builders, allied to falls in business for shops and restaurants.

Shop owners and workers on a deserted Oxford Street, central London's main shopping destination said trade had been hit heavily since Friday.

Chief European and UK economist Howard Archer said, "With the bad weather looking set to continue well into this week and possibly beyond, the risk of a triple dip recession is growing by the day."

Snow Costs UK Economy ‘£500m A Day’

Today's heavy snow could cost the UK economy almost £500m, according to new research by insurance group RSA.

The bad weather continues to engulf the UK , with up to 30cm - or a foot - of snow expected in south Wales.

RSA based its findings on the economic impact of the severe weather conditions in December 2010.

At the time, the Office for National Statistics estimated the snow caused the UK economy to contract by 0.5% in the fourth quarter.

Jon Sellors, RSA's head of research, told Sky News the ongoing weather conditions had impacted businesses, schools and the transport system.

"We estimate that up to a third of the UK's workforce have been unable to get into work, which would cost the economy up to £473m.

"And if the bad weather continues, the economic cost is only going to get higher."

Ross Walker, UK economist at RBS, said there was an "obvious risk" snow would hit growth in the UK.

"This weather comes at a bad time - when the economy is growing at a 1% annual rate, it doesn't take much in any individual quarter to push it backwards," he told Sky News.

But he stressed it is important not to overstate impact of bad weather: “If you get a negative GDP figure because of weather then that is a one-off - it does not represent an underlying economic problem."

It comes amid fears that Britain's economy shrank in the final quarter of the year - with official figures due next Friday.

The industries most likely to be affected by bad weather are construction and retail, Mr Walker added.

At the end of 2010 - when heavy snow fell in some areas of the UK for weeks - construction was down by 3.3%.

"Construction is obviously vulnerable to bad weather, and retail could also get hit," he said.

"Although if it snows so heavily that you don't go and buy a pair of shoes you want, you will probably go and get them when the weather improves."

But Douglas McWilliams, chief executive of the Centre for Economic and Business Research, said the snow could hit some businesses hard.

"The economy isn't in great shape, and the retail sector isn't in great shape," he told Sky News.

"So even if in aggregate retailers don't lose out over a two or three month period, cash is king.

"If you lose a day's takings it may be the straw that breaks the camel's back."

The bad weather comes at a testing time for Britain's high streets, following a tough Christmas period.

Official retail figures were worse than expected, showing a 0.3% fall in total sales in December compared with the month before.

Since the start of 2013 three big names – Jessops, HMV and Blockbuster – have already been forced to call in the administrators.

Government’s Drive To Expel Foreign Students Is ‘Damaging UK Economy’

Calls to crackdown on bogus foreign students have driven large numbers of genuine overseas applicants to competitor countries, damaging not only universities but also the UK economy, a university chief has warned.

Chief executive of Universities UK, Nicola Dandridge, said repeated statements by ministers to be tougher on immigration had made international students feel unwelcome.

She said universities are reporting a significant drop in the number of students applying from overseas, particularly from India, Pakistan, China and Saudi Arabia,

"These are countries that send large numbers and also they are important countries in terms of international engagement, so we want to be promoting and fostering relations with them, not erecting barriers," she told The Guardian.

Any fall in foreign applicants will impact not only universities but also on the economy and international relations, she warned.

"They bring connections that reap dividends in financial and cultural and social terms way into the future," she said.

"We are concerned about the language and the atmosphere being created, not least because it plays very, very badly internationally.

"Whatever the intentions of the politicians are ... every time these sorts of comments are made by the Home Secretary or others it does have a potentially very damaging impact internationally."

In November, Boris Johnson issued a warning over prejudice against foreign students in the UK, saying new visa rules introduced by ministers sent out the "wrong signal".

Following the London Mayor's visit to India, a private Indian university announced its plans to open a campus in London for 15,000 foreign students.

Overseas students are estimated to be worth £8bn a year to the British economy, a figure projected to rise to £16.8bn by 2025, according to a study by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Home Secretary Theresa May last month announced the introduction of face-to-face interviews for 100,000 applicants for student visas a year.

She said the government's success in closing down bogus colleges and cutting student visa numbers by 74,000 (26%) last year as part of a drive to reduce overall net migration but insisted that there was no cap on legitimate students from outside the EU.

Dandridge said politicians need to portray the UK as being open and welcoming to international students without compromising immigration laws.

Mark Harper, the immigration minister, added: "The UK's education system is one of the best in the world but to maintain this reputation it is vital that we tackle the abuse of the student route, while making sure Britain remains open for business."

UK Elections: Business As Usual Triumphs

UK Elections: Business as Usual Triumphs

by Stephen Lendman

May 7 general elections approach. Britain is like America. It's all over before polls open. Monied interests win every time.

Ordinary people lose out more than ever in modern memory. It shows in opinion polls.

Only 16% of voters trust politicians. Why anyone besides well-off Brits do they'll have to explain.

It doesn't matter who wins on Thursday. Torries and New Labour are even in polls. They're like Republicans and Democrats in America - two sides of the same coin, not a dime's worth of difference between them.

Neither major party is expected to win a majority. Expect coalition government with smaller parties to follow. They largely support the same regressive policies.

All politicians lie. Nothing they say can be believed. New Labour leader Ed Miliband maintained the standard saying Britain's "clear choice on Thursday (is) between a Labour government that will put working people first or a Tory government that will only ever work for the privileged few."

Britain's "clear choice" is none at all. Monied interests run things. Bankers top the pecking order.

Politicians come and go. One major party or the other wins. Things stay the same.

Neoliberal harshness, financialization, weak unions, offshoring manufacturing, privatizing state enterprises, deregulation, and disappearing social justice characterize Britain's economy.

London's Guardian warned of a "hit list of (more) welfare cuts" coming.

Voltaire once explained British society saying its people "are like their own beer; froth on top, dregs at bottom, the middle excellent."

Today's froth never had it better. Poor Brits are enduring their hardest times since post-WW II recovery.

Middle class society is fast disappearing - like in America. Britain's weekly Spectator magazine says it's "shrinking and sinking."

"The lifestyle that the average earner had half a century ago -  reasonably sized house, dependable healthcare, a decent education for the children and a reliable pension - is becoming the preserve of the rich."

"Middle-class pensioners look on amazed at how their children, now into adulthood, seem to have a far harder time."

Rich elites run things more than ever. They doubled their wealth since 2009. The average worker earns less when adjusted for inflation and wage cuts.

Former Bank of England governor Mervyn King said middle class society is enduring the longest squeeze in living memory. Rich folks never had it better.

London is unaffordable to live in. House prices average over $750,000. The average wage is less than $50,000.

In January, thousands participated in a March for Homes rally. They demanded solutions to unaffordable housing prices - worsening as they escalate.

They carried banners saying "People before profit." Build council homes (reasonably priced ones for working class people)." "Take the wealth of the 1%."

Rents surged an average 13% annually since 2010. So have repossessions and evictions. Britain increasingly is unfit to live in - just like America.

New Labour claiming "Britain can be better" rings hollow for millions enduring increasing hardships.

They're "all the same," growing numbers of voters say about a system increasingly ignoring their needs.

They promise one thing. They do another. Serving monied interests and allying with Washington's war machine matter most.

Respect Party Bradford West MP George Galloway is running for reelection. He calls himself "your traditional, much-loved black cab."

"You don't know what you've got until it's gone. There are not a lot of us black cabs around any more."

His constituency is one of Britain's poorest. It's struggling to reinvent itself. Despite his best  best efforts, he's up against a corrupted, uncaring system.

He's one of 650 House of Commons members. "Recovery, what recovery," he asks?

"We keep hearing that the economic recovery is better in Britain than in any other European country."

"Well it may be in London and the Home Counties, but it certainly isn't here" and most other places in Britain.

Millions are suffering. Food banks are proliferating, Galloway explained. "Can you imagine what the country will look like by 2020 if these barbarians are returned" to power, he stressed.

"We need investment in jobs and infrastructure…But it won't come under the Tories or this miserable local Labour administration." Or New Labour if it bests the Torries nationwide.

Social justice is fast disappearing. Force-fed austerity is official UK policy.

So is growing wealth inequality. It's risen four times faster since 2008 compared to the seven preceding years.

It bears repeating. Britain is like America - governed of, by and for its privileged elites alone.

It's corrupt, fundamentally unfair and ruthlessly anti-democratic. Young people have no futures.

An entire generation is lost. Social welfare cuts hits Britain's most disadvantaged hardest.

Inequality is booming. Politicians able to make a difference don't care. Increasing amounts of public wealth in private hands is a slippery slope to third world status.

Margaret Thatcher escalated inequality. She oversaw one of the greatest ever transfers of wealth to British society's most well-off.

David Cameron is worse. New Labour's Ed Miliband is no better. Robbing poor Peter to pay rich Paul is official bipartisan policy.

It's endorsed by Liberal Democrats, Britain's third ranked party. It's neither liberal nor democratic. It's hard right like the rest.

On Thursday, voting options are death by hanging or firing squad. Ballot choices exclude government serving everyone equitably.

Media Scoundrels on Sham Ukrainian Elections

Media Scoundrels on Sham Ukrainian Elections

by Stephen Lendman

Their comments didn't surprise. They supported sham Ukrainian elections. Throughout the run-up, voting and aftermath.

They endorse sham US ones. They pretend fantasy democracy is real. They do it every time. Unapologetically. With a straight face.

The New York Times headlined "Election of President Seen as Beginning to Repairing Ukraine," saying:

Some Ukrainians called Sunday's election "the triumphant culmination of six months of protests and at times violent upheaval."

The Times claimed many people believe Ukraine is different than earlier. With "systemic government reforms." With "more on the way."

Citing unnamed "analysts" claiming unidentified "civic activists, combined with pressure from… International Monetary Fund demand(s) in exchange for…emergency financing…set Ukraine on a course…past…post-Soviet…corruption and mismanagement."

Unnamed "experts" were cited. "(I)mportant changes" were made, they claimed. Raising gas prices, The Times noted. It called it a step "experts" urged for years.

Fact: Most Ukrainians are impoverished.

Fact: Many deeply.

Fact: Millions more heading for destitution.

Fact: IMF loan sharks demand bankers get paid first.

Fact: Then other major investors.

Fact: Debt service matters most.

Fact: Force-fed austerity is mandated.

Fact: When Ukrainians need help most of all.

Fact: Residual amounts pay depleted bureaucrat ranks.

Fact: Those not sacked get poverty or sub-poverty wages.

Fact: Without benefits, hugely reduced ones, or too few to matter.

Fact: With virtually nothing for ordinary Ukrainians longterm.

Fact: Kiev putschists increased gas prices 50% starting May 1.

Fact: Ukraine's national oil and gas company Naftogaz hiked them 40% more beginning July 1.

Fact: It promised further stiff increases ahead.

Fact: At the same time, Ukraine's central bank began limiting currency interventions.

Fact: Since January 1, Ukraine's hryvnia currency lost over one-fourth of its dollar value.

Fact: It may end up worthless.

Fact: Expect more deterioration ahead.

Fact: Pensioner income was halved.

Fact: It went from $160 to $80 dollars monthly.

Fact: Other social benefit cuts were made.

Fact: Across-the-board.

Fact: More coming.

Fact: Ordinary Ukrainians are hit hardest.

Fact: Kommersant-Ukraine (K-U) obtained an internal document.

Fact: "The Finance Ministry has prepared a plan for optimizing budget expenditures, which implies budget sequestration is to be in force before the end of March," said K-U.

Fact: "For this purpose, in particular, it has been proposed to reduce capital costs, eliminate tax schemes and preferences and to cut social benefits, for example, 50 percent of pensions to working pensioners."

Fact: At the same time, plans are to plunder Ukraine.

Fact: Hollow out its economy.

Fact: Sell its state enterprises at fire sale prices.

Fact: Sack growing thousands of its workers.

Fact: Eliminate its trade unions altogether.

Fact: Crack down hard on nonbelievers.

Fact: A race to the bottom defines official policy.

Fact: Hunger and homelessness are increasing.

Fact: So is human misery.

Fact: Popular needs don't matter.

Fact: Fascist regimes operate this way.

Fact: Don't expect Times correspondents, contributors or editors to explain.

Fact: Editorial policy defends the indefensible.

Washington Post editors bash Putin irresponsibly. "Will the West move the goalposts again for" him they asked?

Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel "warned that disruption of Ukraine's election by Russia would trigger a tough new round of sanctions by the West."

They expanded "what (they) meant by 'disruption…' " They said it's "not just whether "Moscow's agents tried to stop voting, but whether the government of Vladimir Putin tried to prevent such interference."

Voting included "substantial disruption(s)." In "two (Eastern) provinces…"

"(W)here Moscow's agents tried to stop voting," they claimed.

Where Vladimir Putin did nothing "to prevent such interference," they said.

"(N)o voting (was) possible" in most Donetsk and Lugansk districts.

"Ukrainian security forces (were) ambushed." Kiev "election commissions (were) abducted and threatened."

"There's little question among Ukrainian government officials and Western diplomats in Kiev that Russia is backing the separatists and has done nothing to stop their interference."

"Yet US and German officials…again (moved) the goalposts." They "justif(ied) retreat by (saying voting) will proceed smoothly in the rest of the country."

Noting Putin "hinted he would accept the results. The bottom line is that Mr. Putin could come out of the election having kept alive the separatist movement…"

"(W)ithout suffering economic consequences." Giving "Moscow de facto suzerainty over the eastern provinces…"

"(A) power to block any move by Ukraine toward the West."

WaPo called it "lapse of Western resolve."

Fact: It bears repeating.

Fact: Ukraine's sham electoral process was farcical.

Fact: It had no legitimacy whatever.

Fact: So-called Eastern Ukrainian "substantial disruption(s)" reflect freedom fighting in action.

Fact: For fundamental human and civil rights everyone deserves.

Fact: For what warrants universal support.

Fact: So-called "Moscow agents" don't exist.

Fact: Ukrainian freedom fighters acted on their own volition.

Fact: No evidence suggested otherwise.

Fact: None whatever.

Fact: They're not separatists.

Fact: They're not militants.

Fact: They're ordinary people wanting to live free.

Fact: Most Donetsk and Lugansk residents reject Kiev putschists.

Fact: They refused to vote.

Fact: Ballot choices excluded democratic ones.

Fact: Fascists or sympathizers alone competed.

Fact: Putin "hinted" nothing.

Fact: He was clear and unequivocal.

Fact: "We understand that the people of Ukraine want their country to emerge from this crisis," he said.

Fact: "We will treat their choice with respect."

Fact: "We are today working with those people who control the government, and after the election we will of course work with the newly elected authorities."

Fact: He urged peaceful conflict resolution.

Fact: He stressed "constructive dialogue."

Fact: He made no demands or ultimatums.

Fact: He urged mutual respect.

Fact: He supports unity.

Fact: He opposes separatism.

Fact: He has no Ukrainian territorial ambitions.

Fact: Or anywhere else.

Fact: Claims about him wanting Russia's empire restored don't wash.

Fact: He called making them "a tool in the (anti-Russian) information war."

Fact: "People are trying to label us as such, that we're trying to restore the empire, the Soviet Union, to bring everybody under our influence. But this is totally inaccurate," he said.

Fact: Ukrainian security forces wage war without mercy.

Fact: On ordinary Donestsk and Lugansk civilians.

Fact: Notions of heavily armed troops being "ambushed" are sheer nonsense.

Fact: Or claims about "threaten(ing)" and "abduct(ing)" them.

Fact: Or saying Putin backs separatists and does nothing to stop them.

Fact: Or suggesting he's in any way involved.

Fact: So-called goalpost retreat claims reflect WaPo editors neocon credentials.

Fact: They're militantly hardline.

Fact: They support war.

Fact: They deplore peace.

Fact: They reject diplomatic conflict resolutions.

Fact: They prefer belligerent ones.

The Wall Street Journal headlined "Ukraine Seeks to Regain Stability as Voters Head to the Polls."

"In Donetsk, hundreds of heavily armed pro-Russia rebels paraded in front of a crowd of about 2,000 to underscore the power they hold there," it said.

"The rebel insurgency has left dozens of people dead and transformed much of the country's southeast into a conflict zone."

Fact: Journal comments were milder than their usual militancy.

Fact: Perhaps a Monday editorial follow-up will talk tough. Perhaps it'll make up for what its election day report lacked.

Fact: So-called "heavily armed pro-Russia rebels" use hand-held light ones.

Fact: They're no match against Ukrainian tanks, APCs, artillery, mortars, attack helicopters and fixed wing warplanes.

Fact: They reject fascist rule.

Fact: Most prefer Ukrainian unity.

Fact: They want local autonomy.

Fact: They want Ukraine federalized.

Fact: They want the right to elect their own officials.

Fact: They reject having them appointed.

Fact: Doing so denies their democratic rights.

Fact: Washington bears full responsibility.

Fact: It turned their regions into conflict zones.

Fact: It elevated illegitimate fascist putschists to power.

Fact: They launched war without mercy.

Fact: They did so against freedom-fighting Ukrainians.

Fact: They acted at Obama's behest.

Fact: Don't expect Journal correspondents, contributors or editors to explain.

Fact: They in lockstep with longstanding US policy.

Fact: Imperial lawlessness reflects it.

Fact: Ukraine is in the eye of the storm.

Fact: It's Obama's latest imperial trophy.

Fact: Holding it is another matter entirely.

Fact: Ukrainian freedom fighters may have final say.

Fact: Perhaps if they stay the course.

Fact: If their will to win remains indomitable.

Fact: If growing thousands more Ukrainians join them.

Fact: If freedom fighting protests spread nationwide.

Fact: If they're sustained.

Fact: Organized people can beat organized money.

Fact: Perhaps Ukrainian freedom fighters will become role models.

Fact: Perhaps for activists everywhere.

Fact: Perhaps they'll inspire resistance too strong to beat.

Fact: Perhaps real change is possible.

It bears repeating. The fullness of time will tell.

Putin on Ukraine’s Sham Election

Putin on Ukraine's Sham Election

by Stephen Lendman

He's a master chess player. He's a world-class geopolitical leader.

He shames his Western counterparts. He makes them look amateurish by comparison.

He thanked St. Peterburg Economic Forum participants. He thanked everyone attending.

"We established good rapport with our partners in all areas of production, from all sectors of the economy," he said.

"(W)e are very pleased with how cooperation with our partners" went, he added.

I'm impressed with "this year's attendance," he said. Elements involved included "80% of the global information flow," he explained.

Their influence on "global and national news cannot be overstated." He requested they disseminate their message widely.

Spread it worldwide, he urged. Build good relations with Russia. Do it because it matters.

Putin addressed Sunday's Ukrainian election. "This is what I think," he said. Putschist power may be strengthened.

Ukraine's new president may either be transitional, hardline or despotic.

Kiev junta power and "principal (presidential) candidates are, after all, different people…(It) may not be in the interests of those (in charge) today (to have a legitimate) newly elected president."

"I wouldn't like to think that it's the start of a new cold war," he said. "No one needs it, and I don't think it's going to happen."

"It would have been more logical and more fundamental in my opinion to hold a referendum at first, to adopt the constitution and then to hold the elections basing on the new legislature."

"A new constitution may be adopted" post-election. "If this is how it turns out to be, then the new president could become intermediary."

"Or on the contrary, he would be accumulating maximum of authoritative powers. Both scenarios will be tied to the escalation of the domestic political fight" for control.

Either way, Russia urges "constructive dialogue." Excluding demands or ultimatums. Based on mutual respect. Without ulterior motives.

Russia operates in good faith, Putin stressed. It expects likewise treatment in return. Nothing less is acceptable. It wants trustworthy partners.

It respects sovereignty of all nations. It expects no less in return. It deplores war, violence and instability. It champions peaceful conflict resolutions.

Its actions speak louder than words. It reflects geopolitical honesty. It's polar opposite Western policies. It's struggling to prevail.

Saturday was a Kiev-ordered "Day of Silence." Sunday presidential and mayoral elections followed.

In seven regional areas - Kiev, Nikolaev, Odessa, Sumy, Kherson, Cherkassy and Chernovtsy.

Saturday campaigning was prohibited. Sunday voting continued from 8AM to 8PM. It didn't matter either way.

Twenty-one aspirants competed for president. If no one wins a majority, second round voting follows. Matching two leading candidates.

Most likely in early June. Initial results should be published by around June 4. If needed, round two will follow soon as possible. In days or weeks at most.

It doesn't matter. Final results are virtually preordained. They're predetermined. Petro Proroshenko is anointed to win.

Expect electoral rubber-stamping to follow. So-called polls show his support at from around 34 - 38 - to as much as 44%.

He's highest in Western Ukraine. Less in Eastern. Least in Southeastern.

Yulia Tymshenko ranks second. She's way behind. At 5.9 - 8.4% overall. She has no chance whatever. Nor do other candidates scoring less.

They're all putschist-approved. They're regime supporters. They're hardline fascists. Not a democrat among them.

None approved. None whatever among ballot choices. Ukrainians have none at all. Key is Russia's response.

It rejects Kiev putschists. It's hard imagining support for what's coming. Moscow wants free, fair, open, democratic elections.

Sham ones followed. Will Moscow recognize what it rejects? Don't bet on Putin supporting what demands denunciation.

His policy may differ from post-electoral rhetoric. For sure he won't accept what harms Russian interests. Especially hostile Western policies.

Post-electoral Ukrainian governance will determine Russian policy. Mostly whether attacking Eastern freedom fighters ceases.

Anything less is unacceptable. Elections during regime aggression have no legitimacy whatever. Nor do putschist-controlled ones.

Lugansk and Donetsk regions reject them. It's unclear how most Ukrainians feel. How many will vote?

How many know what's at stake? How many understand democratic choices don't exist?

How many realize they've been had? How many will go along or opt out? Will electoral manipulation obscure vote totals and turnout?

Will anything officially reported be legitimate? Will Big Lies substitute? Will independently disseminated information expose them?

On May 24, Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics united. A Novorossiya (New Russia) state was formed.

Donetsk (DPR) leader Denis Pushilin announced it, saying:

"We’ve signed a memorandum on the republics' union. We've named the united regions as the union of people's republic."

They include Donetsk, Lugansk, Odessa, Nikolaev, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, Kharkov, and Kherson regions.

Details are being finalized. Commissions are preparing political, economic and social policies.

They'll be completed in due course. Donbass Governor Pavel Gubarev confirmed Novorossiya's formation.

"The document was signed by DPR premier Alexander Borodai and head of the Lugansk People's Republic Alexei Karyakin," he said.

A popular manifesto was adopted. It vows self-determination. It includes protection from neo-Nazi terrorism.

It stresses Popular Front resistance. It includes "everybody (able and) ready to resist self-appointed" Kiev putschists.

Against their illegitimacy. Against their aggressive war without mercy. Against their cold-blooded murder.

Against oligarch power. Against complicit Western interests. Against fascists wanting freedom destroyed.

Against their hardline rule. Against war on democracy. Against attempts to destroy fundamental human and civil rights. Against what freedom fighters support.

"We do not recognize the president and parliament of Ukraine," DPR and LPR leaders said.

"The Donetsk and Lugansk republics are independent states."

"We will recognize a government of a newly-elected president if (Kiev) recognize(s) the republics' independence."

It "should immediately withdraw troops from our republics…(It) should stop (all) military actions."

It should do so straightaway. It should recognize regional self-rule. Their sovereign self-determination, Gubarev stressed.

It shows no signs of doing so. War without mercy continues. Expect worse post-election.

Expect all-out war. Hot and propaganda ones. What follows remains to be seen.

Freedom-fighting struggles aren't resolved quickly. They continue. Perhaps longterm.

Perhaps after lots more bloodshed. It's unclear how things will end.

Whatever side is more committed may prevail. Battles are usually decided this way.

Eastern Ukrainians show no signs of quitting. Their resolve is their best hope. It's encouraging. It's inspiring. It's motivating others to get involved.

Perhaps growing thousands will do so. Perhaps an eventual majority. Perhaps including Western Ukrainians.

Perhaps huge numbers nationwide. Perhaps Obama's latest imperial trophy isn't secure. Perhaps it'll slip-slide away.

Perhaps he'll lose another war. He hasn't won one yet. Nor did Bush. Or Clinton. Or Bush I.

Or their post-WW II predecessors. Despite millions of corpses revealing their barbarity.

Displaying hubris and arrogance. Making more enemies than friends.

Prohibiting democracy at home and abroad. Heading America for full-blown tyranny and ruin.

Waging war on humanity. Perhaps destroying it altogether.

Fascist regimes operate this way. America is by far the worst in world history.

Others pale in comparison. It threatens humanity's survival. It hangs by a thread.

Wall Street Journal Supports Putschist Ukrainian Oligarch Rule

Wall Street Journal Supports Putschist Ukrainian Oligarch Rule

by Stephen Lendman

Sham elections approach. They'll be held Sunday, May 25. They're illegitimate. They have no legal standing.

Coup-appointed putschists are running them. Washington supports what demands rejection. So does the Wall Street Journal.

It's in lockstep with putschist rule. Murdoch's world reflects presstitute power.

It features demagoguery, propaganda, pseudo-journalism, corporate power, and warmongering. It supports wrong over right.

It turns truth on its head. It lacks ethical and moral standards. Its poisonous influence debauches whatever it touches. It endorses Wall Street grand theft.

It favors hard right billionaire bandits running Ukraine. On May 22, it headlined "A Pragmatic Favorite to Lead a Shaky Ukraine," saying:

Candidates reflect "few policy differences." Their "backgrounds are similar…The only issue in the Ukrainian presidential vote on Sunday is the country's survival."

"The election takes place 'at a time of war.' " Russia "occup(ies) Crimea…Slow to confront Moscow, Western leaders are reluctant to call what's going on by its proper name."

Fact: Putschist-approved candidates alone are competing.

Fact: Ballot choices exclude democratic one.

Fact: So-called "pragmatic favorite" Petro Poroshenko is a billionaire oligarch crook.

Fact: He made money the old-fashioned way.

Fact: He stole it.

Fact: "We can do business with anyone," he says, as long as he gets his share.

Fact: He supported Maidan putschists.

Fact: He did so straightaway.

Fact: He ignored their violence.

Fact: Ukrainian oligarchs notoriously plunder the country for profits.

Fact: They exploit ordinary Ukrainians.

Fact: They deplore responsible law and order.

Fact: Poroshenko's empire includes food, automotive and media interests.

Fact: Oligarch power began after Soviet Russia's dissolution.

Fact: It hardened during Leonid Kuchma's presidency (July 1994 - January 2005).

Fact: He's called oligarch power's founding father.

Fact: One hand feeds the other.

Fact: Mutual dependence reflects official policy.

Fact: Ukrainian government officials conspire with oligarch crooks.

Fact: They facilitate massive corruption.

Fact: Each side benefits hugely.

Fact: They do so with underworld elements.

Fact: All Ukrainian presidents operate this.

Fact: Some more than others.

Fact: Differences are in degree, not kind.

Fact: Putschists running things are worst of all.

Fact: Expect greater than ever grand theft.

Fact: Expect Ukraine more than ever plundered.

Fact: Expect Western crooks stealing plenty.

Fact: Expect Ukraine turned into a cash cow for looting.

Fact: Expect the entire country sucked dry.

Fact: Expect the economy hollowed out for profit.

Fact: Expect greater than ever mass impoverishment.

Fact: Expect sham elections rubber-stamping things.

Fact: Expect hardened Ukrainian fascism.

Fact: Expect it in Europe's epicenter.

Fact: Expect protracted Great Depression conditions.

Fact: Expect total Western support.

Poroshenko is a "runaway" Sunday favorite, said the Journal. At issue only is whether he'll need one or two rounds to become president.

He's "a rebuke to the Kremlin propaganda machine," said the Journal.

Fact: Journal editors bash Russia irresponsibly.

Fact: Misinformation rubbish substitutes for credible journalism.

In the 1980s, Poroshenko studied with former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili.

They maintain contact. One fascist thug supports another. In the 1990s, Poroshenko amassed a fortune.

He "dabbled in politics" at the same time, said the Journal. Sitting in parliament assured immunity from prosecution.

He held various ministerial jobs. "His most enduring alliance has been with Ukraine's pro-Western camp," said the Journal.

He supported 2004 Orange Revolution conspirators. He operates politically and in business extrajudicially.

He backed Maidan putschists. He helped bankroll them.

His "visit to Crimea at the start of the Russian invasion in February earned him points for bravery," said the Journal.

Fact: Crimeans acted on their own volition.

Fact: They did so near unanimously.

Fact: They voted 96.77% for unification with Russia.

Fact: They did so with historic turnout. At 83%, it was unprecedented.

Fact: Russia had no involvement whatever.

Fact: Claiming otherwise turns truth on its head.

Fact: Longstanding Journal editorial policy reflect lies, damn lies, Big Lies, and more of them.

According to the Journal, Poroshenko promises to build, not destroy. He ludicrously vowed "zero" corruption tolerance.

He's up to his ears in it. He amassed his fortune this way. He plans grabbing much more.

"We live in a different Ukraine," he claimed. He omitted explaining in what way.

He was silent about fascist putschist power. His connection to it. His pillaging plans as president.

"History has given us a unique chance," he said. He intends taking full advantage.

He'll enforce police state ruthlessness. He'll continue waging aggressive war.

He'll keep killing his own people. He'll blame victims for his crimes. He'll get full Western support.

According to the Journal, "Putin is playing spoiler. If not for Russian intervention Ukraine's chances of achieving that banal European dream of normalcy had looked better than even."

"Its media, civic and student groups and broader society are mature and vigilant. This is no post-revolutionary Egypt."

Fact: Egyptian fascism is horrendous.

Fact: Democracy is fantasy.

Fact: US-supported putschists run things.

Fact: Anointed president-to-be General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to Chile's Pinochet.

Fact: State terror is official policy.

Fact: Ukraine is worse.

Fact: It's much worse.

Fact: Conditions are incendiary.

Fact: At risk is civil war.

Fact: It risks spilling cross-borders.

Fact: It risks potential East/West confrontation.

Fact: It risks possible global war.

"Ukrainians have done their part," said the Journal. It stopped short of explaining horrendous horrors Ukrainian face post-election.

Worse than post-February coup. It remains to be seen how they'll react. They'll learn soon enough they were had.

They may join their Eastern Ukrainian freedom fighters. National rebellion may follow. The fullness of time will tell.

Ukraine’s Fascist Roots

Ukraine's Fascist Roots

by Stephen Lendman

US-installed putschists are fascist extremists. Elevating them to power should scare everyone.

Ukraine is the epicenter of European fascist reemergence. It's a freedom-destroying cancer.

It threatens world peace. It risks global conflict. It doesn't surprise. Its roots are deep.

Washington offers full support. It's longstanding. It dates from 1945. Svoboda and Right Sector parties are modern-day Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) heirs.

Its Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) leaders were Nazi collaborators. They fought with Hitler's Waffen SS Galician Division.

Their forces massacred hundreds of thousands. Their hero was Stepan Bandera. He headed OUN-B. It terrorized Ukrainian and Polish Jews.

His legacy thrives in Ukraine today. His heirs openly display his OUN-B red and black flag. They enjoy full US support.

Svoboda's slogan is "Ukraine for Ukrainians." Bandera said the same thing. He wanted Ukraine made ethnically pure. Mass extermination followed.

Svoboda earlier called itself Socialist-Nationalists. It bears erie resemblance to Hitler's National Socialism. It reflects fascism writ large.

Svoboda openly calls for "creat(ing) a truly Ukrainian Ukraine in the cities of the East and South."

"We will need to cancel parliamentarism, ban all political parties, nationalise the entire industry, all media, prohibit the importation of any literature to Ukraine from Russia."

"Completely replace the leaders of the civil service, education management, military (especially in the East)."

"Physically liquidate all Russian-speaking intellectuals and all Ukrainophobes (fast, without a trial shot. Registering Ukrainophobes can be done here by any member of Svoboda)."

"Execute all members of the anti-Ukrainian political parties."

Svoboda straightaway abolished Russian-speaker minority rights. It targets Jews, ethnic Russians and opposition elements.

Its manifesto calls for "carry(ing) out a broad public discussion about the meaning of Ukrainian pluralism for the future of Europe, Russia and the world."

Its aim is undermining Russian Eurasian influence. It wants fundamental freedoms destroyed. It wants hardline rule replacing it.

Democracy is strictly verboten. Hooliganism is longstanding  strategy. Unrestrained violence reflects it. Opposition elements are targeted for elimination.

Post-WW II, Washington began cooperating with Ukrainian fascists. OUN-B leader Mykola Lebed (1909 - 1998) openly collaborated with Nazis.

He was responsible for massive Volhynia and Eastern Galicia Polish ethnic cleansing.

In 1949, he emigrated to America. He did so with CIA/State Department help.

He lived in New York. His CIA-funded Prolog Research Corporation spied on Soviet Russia.

In his book titled "The OUN, the UPA and the Holocaust: A Study in the Manufacturing of Historical Myths," Per Rudling said:

"During the early Cold War, extreme nationalism and fascism were retooled and employed by Western intelligence services in the struggle against the USSR."

"One CIA analyst argued that 'some form of nationalist feeling continues to exist (in Ukraine)…"

"There is an obligation to support it as a cold war weapon."

According to Rudling, CIA and State Department officials collaborated with OUN members.

They sponsored them. They brought them to America. They shielded them from war crimes prosecutions.

They helped them gain "positions of of influence and authority, assisting their creation of semi-academic institutions and/or academic positions at established universities," said Rudling.

They whitewashed their WW II crimes. They transformed them into Ukrainian heroes.

During Viktor Yushchenko's illegitimate Orange Revolution presidency, institutes of memory management and myth-making were established.

They buried information about OUN/UPA atrocities.

According to Rudling, "(u)nlike many other former Soviet republics, the Ukrainian government did not need to develop new national myths from scratch, but imported ready concepts developed in the Ukrainian diaspora."

Washington calls OUN/UPA and its modern-day heirs "nationalists." It buries their fascist roots. It ignores their criminal past.

Rudling was clear and unequivocal saying:

"The OUN shared the fascist attributes of antiliberalism, anticonservatism, and anticommunism, an armed party, totalitarianism, anti-Semitism, Führerprinzip, and the adoption of fascist greetings."

"Its leaders eagerly emphasized to Hitler and Ribbentrop that they shared the Nazi Weltanschauung and a commitment to a fascist New Europe."

Racial/ethnic purity was a core ideological element. It remains so today. Washington's alliance with hard right extremist groups is longstanding.

Political analyst Caleb Maupin said decades before European fascism, Ku Klux Klan elements were state-sponsored in former slave-holding states.

It wasn't the only fascist organization Washington embraced, said Maupin. Post-WW I, American Legion leaders were openly fascist.

So were prominent US industrialists like Henry Ford. Fascism thrives in today's America. It reflects its dark side.

It emerged post-WW I. At the time, Western civilization was called decadent and destructive. It was in decline, critics said.

In his book titled, "The Decline of the West," Oswald Spengler said "liberalism, democracy, socialism (and) free-masonry" weakened it. Fascism alone could save it, he claimed.

In his essay titled, "Fascism: Doctrine and Institutions," Mussolini said, "Fascism denies, in democracy, the absurd conventional untruth of political equality dressed out in the garb of collective responsibility."

He called it Marxism's "complete opposite." In class struggle for social progress and justice, he added.

"Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of State and corporate power," he stressed.

His definition applies now. Corporatism's alliance with political Washington reflects his ideology. It built for decades.

It's deeply entrenched. It reflects Washington's bipartisan agenda. Its criminal class runs things.

Huey Long once said fascism will arrive "wrapped in an American flag." In his book titled, "Friendly Fascism," Bertram Gross called Ronald Reagan its prototype ruler.

He described a slow, powerful "drift toward greater concentration of power and wealth in a repressive Big Business-Big Government."

It reflects a Big Brother alliance. It leads "toward a new and subtly manipulative form of corporatist serfdom." Its friendly face conceals its dark side.

In the 1930s, George Seldes saw it coming. He worried about New Deal policies eroding.

In his 1934 book titled, "Iron, Blood and Profits," he discussed a "world-wide munitions racket."

He cited WW I militarists. He named weapons makers in Europe and America.

He called them "merchants of death." They promote "imperialism (and) colonization - by means of war."

"(T)he healthfulness of the business depends on slaughter. The more wars," the more profits.

His 1943 book titled "Facts and Fascism" explained "Fascism on the Home Front" in Part One. It's called "The Big Money and the Big Profits in Fascism."

In Parts Two and Three, he discussed "Native Fascist Forces" in industry and his day's media. It was a shadow of today's propaganda machine.

Print and radio's early days alone existed. Television was years away.

In his 1935 novel titled, "It Can't Happen Here," Sinclair Lewis saw fascism coming in hard times.

It'll be led by a charismatic leader, he said. A self-styled reformer/populist champion. A con man exploiting human misery.

He recounted Merzelium "Buzz" Windrip's rise to power. His promise to restore prosperity equitably was duplicitous. His alliance with corporatist interests and religious ideologues remained hidden.

He capitalized on hard times. He instituted militarism. He established unconstitutional governance.

He convened military tribunals. He did so for civilians and nonbelievers. He called them traitors.

He solidified hardline rule. He institutionalized tyranny. He put political enemies in concentration camps.

He created Minute Men paramilitaries. They terrorized opposition elements.

He destroyed democracy. He abolished constitutional freedoms. He declared martial law.

He usurped dictatorial powers. He circumvented Congress. He made himself supreme ruler.

Lewis said it can happen here. Today it's institutionalized. It rules America.

It runs Ukraine. Svoboda and Right Sector parties have enormous power.

Their members hold key ministerial positions. Previous articles discussed Obama's new friends. They include a rogue's gallery of societal misfits.

They're militant fascists. They're thugs. They're criminals.

They're illegitimate putschists. They're xenophobic, hate-mongering, ultranationalist anti-Semites.

Combined they represent mob rule. They make mafia bosses look saintly by comparison.

For the first time since WW II, overt fascists have real power in Europe. They hold major government posts.

In December 2012, European parliamentarians expressed concern about "rising nationalistic sentiment in Ukraine."

They called Svoboda members "racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic." They're polar opposite "EU's fundamental values," the added.

They "appeal(ed) to pro-democratic parties in (Ukraine's legislature) not to associate with, endorse, or form coalitions with" these elements.

That was then. This is now. EU officials openly support what they condemned. They do so unapologetically.

They march in lockstep with Washington hardliners. They mock democratic values they claim to support.

Olexander Turchynov serves as illegitimate president/parliament speaker. He's a political opportunist.

He's Ukrainian armed forces commander-in-chief. He's Batkivshchyna/All-Ukrainian Union/Fatherland party deputy chairman.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk serves as Ukraine's illegitimate prime minister. He's super-rich.

He's a former central banker/economy/foreign minister/ parliament (Verkhovna Rada) speaker.

He's a Batkivshchya/All-Ukrainian Union (Fatherland) leader. He sold out for greater wealth and power.

He serves Washington, EU interests and Western bankers. Paying them comes first. Ukrainians bear the burden.

Exploiting them irresponsibly is official policy. So is plundering Ukraine for profit. Selling its state enterprises at fire sale prices.

Strip-mining its state resources. Hollowing out its economy. Wrecking it entirely.

Creating a protracted Greek-style Depression. Making ordinary people suffer most. Cracking down hard on nonbelievers.

Andriy Parubiy co-founded the ultranationalist neo-Nazi Social National party. It's now called Svoboda. He did so with Oleh Tyahnybok.

Right Sector hard right neo-Nazi hate-mongering anti-Semite Dmytro Yarosh is his deputy. He openly boasts about "...fighting Jews and Russians till I die."

He calls Russia Ukraine's "eternal enemy." He said war between both countries is inevitable.

Right Sector neo-Nazis are the worst of Ukrainian extremists. On May 2, they massacred 300 Odessan civilians in cold blood.

They did so inside Odessa's Trade Union House building. They hunted down survivors and murdered them.

They're gun-toting, radicalized terrorists. Imagine them and likeminded scoundrels in charge of Ukraine's government.

Imagine Obama embracing them. They're cold-blooded killers. State terrorism defines their agenda. Elements opposing them are targeted for elimination.

Oleh Tyahnybok heads Svoboda. He's a force to be reckoned with. He reflects fascism writ large. He openly claims determination to crush "Russkie-Yid mafia" elements Ukraine.

Parubiy serves as Kiev's Secretary of National Security and Defense Council. He oversees Ukraine's Defense Ministry and armed forces.

He directed months earlier Right Sector Maidan violence. Other Svoboda/Right Sector officials hold influential ministerial posts.

Obama's new friends are fascist extremists. Their agenda makes peace activists cringe. They threaten civil war. Regional conflict could follow. They risk spreading it globally.

Yatsenyuk vowed never to give up "a centimeter" of Ukraine to Russia. "This is our land," he said. "Our fathers and grandfathers have spilled their blood for this land."

"And we won't budge a single centimeter from (it). Let Russia and its president know this."

Washington pledged full support. Obama pledged financial aid. Doing so violates US law. It doesn't matter.

Parubiy wants all he can get. He wants "immediate US military aid," he said. On May 15, he got feature Wall Street Journal op-ed space requesting it.

He lied claiming "Putin's goal is to destroy the independent Ukrainian state…"

"(B)ecause it had the courage to choose a better future with Europe," he said.

He called UN Charter recognized self-determination "illegal." He said so regarding Crimea's legitimate reunification with Russia.

He turned truth on its head claiming Putin "stirr(ed) up separatist movements in multiple regions of Ukraine in the hope of annexing even more Ukrainian territory."

Ukraine "can't do everything on its own," he said. It's "a peaceful nation," he claimed.

It's waging war without mercy on its own people. Burying truth is longstanding fascist policy.

Parubiy want US military aid. He wants weapons, "modern equipment," and training. He wants all he can get. He enjoys Journal editorial support.

He and likeminded ideologues turned Ukraine into a fascist police state. It's an eastern cauldron of violence.

Paribiy deplores peace. He wants conflict escalated. He ludicrously claims Western military aid can "regain stability."

Enhancing Ukrainian might can "withstand Russia('s) (nonexistent) aggression." He wants powerful weapons supplied.

He wants "tools to defend our nation." He wants them despite no existing threat. He wants them for lawless aggression.

He wants eastern opposition elements crushed. He wants them slaughtered in cold blood.

He wants Washington partnering with his crimes. He risks global conflict.

He and likeminded ideologues may start WW III. Stopping them matters most.
