Press TV | US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has characterized Palestinian Hamas fighters as the “proxy warriors” for the Islamic Republic.
Rice made the statement in a speech to the American Jewish Committee in Washington that underscored growing US concerns about Tehran.
The US secretary of state claimed that Iran is not just a threat to the Palestinian territories, but also in Lebanon, Iraq and even in Afghanistan, AFP said.
Rice vowed to pursue US efforts to isolate Hamas which she said refused to renounce violence, recognize Israel’s right to exist and respect all previous Palestinian agreements with Israel.
“But perhaps of deepest concern, the leaders of Hamas are increasingly serving as the proxy warriors of an Iranian regime that is destabilizing the region, seeking a nuclear capability and proclaiming its desire to destroy Israel,” Rice told the group’s annual meeting.
The Untied States accuses Iran of providing military support to the Hamas movement, a claim that has been recurrently dismissed by Iranian officials. The Islamic Republic condemns the Israeli regime’s atrocities in Palestine and insists that its support for the Palestinian nation is only moral.
