Ron Suskind estaba en NPR esta mañana para discutir su libro nuevo La manera del mundo, que alega la inteligencia principal Tahir Jalil Habbush de Iraq dijo los E.E.U.U. antes de la guerra que Iraq no tuviera ningún WMD.
NPR pidió George Tenet y la casa blanca para el comentario, y, notable bastante, él ambos esencialmente admitieron que ésta era verdad.
SUSKIND: Qué ahora sabemos de esta investigación es que una misión secreta fue conducida en la cual un encargado británico, agente de la inteligencia, satisfizo con el jefe de la inteligencia iraquí en una localización secreta en Amman, Jordania. Y qué el jefe iraquí de la inteligencia dijo los Británico-y esencialmente a americanos, porque somos todos en esto junto-son que no había WMD en Iraq. Y cuál ése significado es que sabíamos todo que llegó a ser tan obvio por el verano después de la invasión. Y el presidente tomó una decisión esencialmente para no hacer caso de esa inteligencia…
NPR: Hemos llamado a jugadores dominantes en Ron que la cuenta… George Tenet de Suskind dice a iraquí no podido para persuadir, y un portavoz blanco de la casa agrega que cualquier información el iraquí pudo haber proporcionado era, cotiza, “inmaterial.”
La corroboración adicional aparece en a El noviembre de 2003 Nueva York mide el tiempo de historia por James Risen. El artículo levantado está sobre tentativas de última hora al lado de Iraq de evitar guerra, usando un intermediario Libanés-Americano nombrado Imad Hage que conocía a Richard Perle:
Una semana [después del febrero de 2003 reuniones en Beirut con el jefe iraquí del servicio de inteligencia de operaciones extranjeras], Sr. Hage dijo, él convino otras reuniones del asimiento en Bagdad. Mr. Hage said Mr. Habbush offered to turn him over to Mr. Hage, but Mr. Hage said he would pass on the message that Mr. Yasin was available.
Mr. Hage said Mr. Habbush also insisted that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction and added, “Let your friends send in people and we will open everything to them.”
Mr. Hage said he asked Mr. Habbush, “Why don’t you tell this to the Bush administration?” He said Mr. Habbush replied cryptically, “We have talks with people.”
Mr. Hage said he later learned that one contact was in Rome between the C.I.A. and representatives of the Iraqi intelligence service. American officials confirm that the meeting took place, but say that the Iraqi representative was not a current intelligence official and that the meeting was not productive.
In addition, there was an attempt to set up a meeting in Morocco between Mr. Habbush and United States officials, but it never took place, according to American officials.
This can be added onto the pile:
• The CIA sent thirty relatives of Iraqi scientists to Iraq to ask them what WMD Iraq had, and they uniformly reported it had nothing.
• Iraq’s foreign minister Nouri Sabri secretly told the US in 2002 that Iraq had no active WMD programs.
• Alan Foley, the head of the CIA’s Weapons Intelligence Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Center, told an acquaintance just before the war that he expected we would find “Not much, if anything.”
