الخلافيّة إستجواب قد خدم تقنية من [وتربوأردينغ] "قيّمة" غرض ولا يمثّل تعذيب, [أتّورني جنرل] سابقة جون [أشكروفت] قال منزل لجنة يوم الخميس.

يشهد على ال [بوش دمينيسترأيشن] إستجواب قواعد قبل المنزل لجنة قضائيّة, دافع [أشكروفت] التقنية بينما يجيب سؤال من [رب]. هوارد [كبل], [ر-نورث] كارولينا.

"[وتربوأردينغ], [أس و لّ نوو], إصدار خلافيّة. أنت تفكّر هو خدم غرض مفيدة?" العضو كونغرس يسأل.

"التقارير أنّ قد سمع أنا, وأنا أتلقّى ما من سبب أن ينكرهم, يشيرون أنّ هم كانوا جدّا قيّمة," [أشكروفت] يقال, يضيف أنّ وكالة المخابرات الأمريكيّة مديرة جورج [تنت] أشار ال "قيمة من المعلومة يستلم من الإستعمال من يحسن إستجواب تقنيات - أنا لا يعرف ما إذا هو كان قال [وتربوأردينغ] أو لا, غير أنّ يفترض أنّ هو كان لعزم - القيمة من أنّ معلومة تجاوز القيمة المعلومة أنّ كان استلمت من كلّ أخرى مصادر."

[وتربوأردينغ] تقنية يصمّم أن يتظاهر يغرق. قد اعترف الوكالة يستعمل هو على ذعر مشبوهات. بعض ناقدات إحترام هو بما أنّ تعذيب; أخرى يقول هو قاسية إستجواب تقنية, ويقول مقترحات هو أداة مفيدة في الحرب على ذعر.

قال [أشكروفت], الذي أفاد معارضته أن يعذّب, العدل قسم قد حدّ أنّ [وتربوأردينغ] - بما أنّ يعيّن ويصف بالوكالة المخابرات الأمريكيّة - لا يمثّل تعذيب.

"يصدق أنا تقرير من [وتربوأردينغ] كان جدّيّة, غير أنّ أنا لا أصدق هو عيّن تعذيب," [أشكروفت] يقال, يستجيب إلى أسئلة من [رب]. [مإكسين] مياه, [د-كليفورنيا].

هو أضاف, "ال [دبرتمنت وف جوستيس] يتلقّى على أساس متوافقة على النصف دزينه متأخّرة سنون أو هكذا, تكرارا ثانية في تقييماته, يؤتى إلى الاستنتاج أنّ تحت القانون في وجود أثناء وقتي كنائب عامّ, [وتربوأردينغ] لم يمثّل تعذيب."

مياه سألوا [أشكروفت] ما إذا اعتبرت هذا تقنيات كنت بما أنّ "تماما غير مقبول وحتّى مجرمة" إن هم كان استعملت على جنديات أمريكيّة.

"جيّدا, اشتراكي إلى هذا مذكرات, وإعتقادي أنّ يزوّد القانون الأساس ل هذا مذكرات على ثابر حتّى بحضور إبنتي يخدم اثنان رحلات الواجب رسم عبر البحار في الخليج منطقة كعضوة من قواتنا مسلّحة," [أشكروفت] يقال.

[رب]. ستيف [شبوت], [ر-وهيو], يسأل [هوو مني] أوقات [وتربوأردينغ] تلقّى يكون أنجزت. Ashcroft said that it’s his “understanding it has been done three times” as part of an “interrogation process.” He said he thinks the subjects of the interrogations “would be labeled as high-valued detainees.”

The House of Representatives failed to muster the two-thirds majority it needed this year to override President Bush’s veto of a bill that would have banned certain CIA interrogation techniques, including waterboarding.

The White House applauded the vote, saying an override “would have diminished the intelligence community’s ability to protect our nation.”

The bill was an effort to curtail the CIA’s ability to use harsh interrogation techniques that the military and other law enforcement agencies ban. It would have restricted U.S. interrogators to techniques outlined in the Army Field Manual.

The White House said the restriction “would have eliminated the legal alternative procedures in place in the CIA program to question the world’s most dangerous and violent terrorists.”
