US Treasury official to discuss North Korea in China trip

A top US Treasury Department official will be visiting China this week to discuss North Korea’s recent actions and new sanctions aimed at curbing Pyongyang’s “destabilizing behavior.”

Adam Szubin, the US Treasury’s acting under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, will travel to Beijing and Hong Kong on March 15 and 16 for discussions about sanctions against North Korea that were introduced by the US and adopted by the UN on March 2.

“This trip provides an important opportunity for discussions of ways to strengthen US-China coordination in response to North Korea’s destabilizing behavior and to ensure sanctions targeting the North Korean regime are as effective as possible,” the Treasury said on Monday.

The sanctions were a response to North’s fourth nuclear test in January, which was followed by an alleged satellite launch the next month.
