PressTV-Huge fire engulfs residential block in Manchester

A huge fire has broken out over several floors in a 12-story block in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

The fire blazed through the ninth and tenth floors of the Joiner Street tower block on Saturday.

Residents of the block were evacuated onto the street as 12 fire engines rushed to the scene. Police closed off roads surrounding the area.

One person has been taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, and police have advised members of the public to avoid the area.

“Firefighting in still ongoing and one casualty has been taken to hospital suffer by smoke inhalation. Please avoid the area as roads are still shut,” the fire service tweeted

Authorities advised those nearby to keep windows and doors shut.

A spokeswoman for the North West ambulance service said resources were at the scene but no further information was currently available.

Witnesses said the fire appeared to have been quickly brought under control.
