Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage has accused the European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, of trying to “break up the United Kingdom” by tearing apart UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s backstop proposal.
Britain has presented May’s UK-wide, time-limited backstop proposal for the Irish border to the European Union ,and is now looking forward to negotiating the details of the plan.
Barnier didn’t completely rule out the Britain’s proposal becoming workable but proposed three questions the plan must answer before becoming acceptable to Brussels and asked for significant compromises.
He also said the European Union’s own plan, which would keep Northern Ireland attached to the bloc’s customs union creating a border in the Irish Sea, could become UK-wide.
