Dit Rapport van Oorlog is goedgekeurd door Uw Overheid
Door Dave Lindorff | Wij Amerikanen werden een grafische illustratie van de nalating van om het even welke onafhankelijke Amerikaanse collectieve nieuwsmedia deze afgelopen dagen als dekking op TV en werden in druk verzadigd met rapporten over John Edwards' infidelity en, even belangrijk, de invasie van Rusland van Georgië.
In het eerste geval, hadden wij volledig stomp als prurient luchten van' gemene buitenhuwelijkse zaak Edwards. Stomp omdat Edwards op dit ogenblik hebben- politicus is. Als er om het even welk punt aan de dekking was zou het moeten geweest zijn, zoals Alex Cockburn in zijn dagboek wees op Counterpunch, de verachtelijke mislukking van die zelfde verslaggevers en „nieuws“ organisaties om de verhaalrug te behandelen vorige herfst, toen het zou kunnen van belang geweest zijn. De rug toen, toen het enige document dat het verhaal behandelt de Nationale Onderzoeker was, Edwards was nog een haalbare kandidaat voor het voorzitterschap, of een mogelijke mededinger opnieuw voor ondervoorzitter. Het is niet dat zijn persoonlijk geslacht-leven om het even welke nieuwswaarde op zich en uit zichzelf heeft. Het punt is dat gehad hij de benoeming won, of geplukt aangezien een ondeugd presidentiële lopende partner, zijn onvermijdelijke blootstelling later tijdens de algemene verkiezing om het even welke Democratische presidentiële kansen zou vernietigd hebben. En de collectieve media kenden terug toen allen over dit verhaal. Zij achtervolgden het (en huidige blitz van verhalen bewijst dat zij niet uit principe! tegenhielden enkel) niet.
Wij lazen dat President Bush de Russische invasie van een andere natie veroordeelde en directe ceasefire verzocht. Maar toch was er niet één woord van verbazing of uitdaging van verslaggevers of commentators of redactieschrijvers bij deze stunningly cynische verklaring die uit een leider komt die zelf voor de flagrant onwettige en vernietigendere invasie van een andere natie verantwoordelijk is. En herinner me, terwijl Georgië op de grens van Rusland is, en zich minstens misschien aan onderdrukking en het aanvallen en misschien zelfs dodende leden van de Russische minderheid in twee van zijn provincies (Georgië bombardeerde de grootste stad in de secessionist provincie die van Ossetia schuldig maakte, misschien 1000 burgers doodt, vóór binnengevallen Rusland), is Irak de helft van een wereld vanaf Amerika en lette op zijn eigen zaken, in elk geval bedreigend geen Amerikanen. Rusland, tot zover, heeft bij het meest gedood een paar duizend Georgiërs. America has, by most accounts killed hundreds of thousands and perhaps as many as 1.2 million Iraqis, very few of them combatants.
We watch and read voluminous reports on this relatively small Russian war against its neighbor and former domestic province (Georgia was one of the SSRs in the old USSR), and meanwhile there is almost nothing being reported about the continuing five-year-old war launched by Bush and Cheney against Iraq. And certainly, over the course of five years we have gotten no visual depiction of that war even approaching the scenes that were on display from the front in Georgia.
Apparently, in the view of our corporate news editors and managers, it is important for Americans to fully witness the bloody horrors of war when that war is being fought by Russia, but we are to be carefully protected from seeing such things when they are being perpetrated by our own centurions. We aren’t even allowed to see the grievous injuries and death being suffered by our own troops.
And, of course, don’t feel to good about the quality of the coverage of the Russian/Georgia conflict either. This too is biased. Indeed one reason we are shown all the carnage is that the US government has been backing Georgia, and there is evidence that the US even encouraged the Georgian attacks on ethnic Russians which provoked the invasion. The US also has obligingly airlifted Georgian troops back from Iraq to Georgia.
This is not news. This is propaganda, pure and simple.
American corporate news media broadcasts and articles should include a disclaimer: “This report was approved by the media managers of the Bush/Cheney administration.”
