President Obama should call off the medical marijuana raids

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

By J.D. Tuccille

Asked about medical marijuana on the campaign trail in New Hampshire just a year and a half ago, then-Senator Barack Obama said, “I would not have the Justice Department prosecuting and raiding medical marijuana users. It’s not a good use of our resources.” Admittedly, he’s been on the job just a few days, but now-President Obama’s administration has just overseen its first medical marijuana raid. It’s time for him to live up to his promise and call off the dogs.

It’s not right to blame the new White House team for the raid in South Lake Tahoe, California. Drug Enforcement Administration officials are still hold-overs from the old administration, with the priorities of the Bush White House. So when the DEA stormed into Holistic Solutions and stole money and marijuana, they were following an old game plan — not necessarily the new one.

So consider this a test. Did Barack Obama mean what he said about pulling the federal government out of the business of kicking in doors and hauling people to jail for using marijuana to treat medical problems? The ball is in your court, Mr. President.

Asking the new president to live up to his promises on medical marijuana is hardly radical. No, radical would be to ask him to respect people’s right to consume whatever substances they please, to produce those substances, to buy them from willing sellers, and to sell them to eager customers. Radical would be to demand that he recognize that people should be free to do whatever they want so long as they don’t violate the equal rights of others.

In other words, whatever is peaceful.

Asking the president to live up to his own promise on medical marijuana isn’t radical at all. It’s just a matter of pointing out that we want to see him walk the walk after talking the talk.

President Obama will be off to a great start if he quickly reins in the DEA and offers credible assurances that this raid will be the last such raid on his watch. If he doesn’t … Well, that will say an awful lot about what we can expect from this administration.

As for whether what we get is enough … Well, some of us think it’s long past time to make a few radical demands.

    President Obama,

I voted for you and congratulations on your presidency. I chose you because I believe you speak the truth and I hope that you will live up to your promises. I believe that you want to help the citizens of this country and help protect our civil liberties and freedoms. You said, “I would not have the Justice Department prosecuting and raiding medical marijuana users. It’s not a good use of our resources.”

    I agree…

I myself am a medical marijuana patient in the state of Oregon and I don’t think it is okay that I need to be afraid for my life, my well being or the safety of my family because federally cannabis is unacceptable.

Marijuana helps me more than any other medication I have ever taken. I have fibromyalgia, chronic muscle spasms, degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, spinal arthritis, acid reflux, generalized anxiety disorder, major recurrent depression etc.. In January 2007 I was taking more than 7 prescription drugs every day. Those medications were costing me my health and my life. I am happy to report that now all I need is medical marijuana, vitamins and 1 prescription medication that I take daily and I feel like a human being again and I can live my life.

The drug war in general is hurting our American people, our economy and ruining millions of lives.

PLEASE, stop federal raids on marijuana patients. I am already losing coverage for the ONE FDA approved medication for fibromyalgia because I am on state health care and they will not pay for it.

Marijuana is a far safer drug by all considerations than even alcohol. Alcohol is legal and controlled and regulated.

Even if you do not end cannabis prohibition, I certainly hope you will call off the medical marijuana raids and protect the rights of the citizens of the country you are serving.

    Thank you,

Please serve the people well, ALL of them.

Peace to you and your family.

patients from all is always hard. but good things take time and good things always come to those who wait then jump. i think that banding together is the smartest way to gain the power needed to discharge dea raids on leagle marijuana users. banding together without greed being the focus and almost half of these organizations i belive that are no more than drug dealers. the DEA needs to convert back to the right side of the law instead of being judge, jury, EXECUTIONOR. also how about letting the justice department stand on its own merits and release the (HOSTAGES) medical marijuana users, THERE ARE SUCH LITTLE RISK THESE PEOPLE WANT THERE DAY IN COURT. they all are expecting our country leaders will stop condeming society and the human race. PEOPLE IF WE BAND TOGETHER WE CAN STOP THE DEA, AND PROTECT OUR COUNTRY. I HAVE HOPE IF ALL OF YOU DO THEN TRY THIS CONTACT ME I HAVE A GREAT DEAL OF EXPIERENCE IN THE WAR OF RIGHTS AND COMMON SENSE.YOU CAN CONTACT ME AT reverendofhaze@live.com join up with us we are here for the people. truth and right fair honest.

Denying patients medical options to those in medical need — especially medication options with Cannabis’s safety profile — is simply barbaric.

If President Obama made this logical and compassionate point, he ratings would increase (remember, most Americans support access to Medical Cannabis and are strongly opposed to this War on Patients, Docs, and Medicine in general).

So, what’s the problem? Are the other elected officials & other gubmint & agency-folk making too much money from their black market connections? Or are did the anti-medical Cannabis crowd fall out of the stupid tree and hit all the branches on the way down?

We have drifted so far from our country’s ideals: attacking sick people for their medicine? what does it have to take before more politicians catch on that this is wrong? (what a bunch of conscienceless, narcissistic Dunces)…

And the raids still continue…will Obama be a man of his word and end the raids?…so far, not yet…
