Is the High Waist Girdle Obsolete?
by Bruce Darden
“High waist girdle” is an outdated word that conjures up images of your grandmother’s lingerie drawer. The wide-spread use of a high waist girdle harkens back to a day when skirts were actually long enough to hide the constricting garments, and the idea of a bare midriff was reserved for the wedding night.
But these days, a high waist girdle is just not what it used to be. In a struggling economy and in the face of penny-pinching consumers, this undergarment is gaining steam – and profits – from America’s growing waistline. The surprising thing about the high waist girdle is that it is being used by and marketed to men. It appears that the acceptance and subsequent increase in sales of these garments is all about what you call it.
For example, high waist girdles can be seen in major department stores, if you know what to look for. In men’s departments the high waist girdle is disguised as a core undershirt, a compression shirt, or a precision-T. There is even one brand marketing the high waist girdle in a term that makes us think of something completely different: an “athletic supporter.” It’s true that the manly version of the high waist girdle doesn’t have legs on it (yet), but these athletic core-supporting wonders are clearly made to cover the high waist girdle area. You call it a core shirt, we call it hiding your love handles. It makes sense based on current fashion trends for men. You can find them front and center, on display, right next to the skinny-legged suits and thin graphic tees.
According to Bruce Darden who is the independent owner of the popular Ardyss website which focuses on the – high waist girdle made this comment:
“This marketing blitz has seen success in women’s’ lines as well, with high waist girdles being sold to women as body shapers, shaping wear, body slimmers, and under the most popular name brand, Spanx.”
Women’s lingerie sales have been up in both 2009 and the first two quarters of 2010, despite a sluggish retail environment. The industry overall experienced a 1.5% increase in 2009 alone, though it is unclear how much of that is associated with high waist girdle sales in particular.”
Bruce Darden also states, “adding men as a new marketing target was a brilliant move on the part of the manufacturers of lycra and spandex. The high waist girdle is not obsolete. If anything, it is gaining steam as the leading new secret to hide the nation’s expanding belly, even in a time when our wallets are skinny”.
