Then, the theory went, Gordon Brown would be able to take Labour to a fourth election victory, strengthen his position as elected prime minister and continue for another four or five years. بعد ذلك ، ذهب من الناحية النظريه ، غوردون براون ان تتمكن من اتخاذ العمل الرابعة لانتخاب النصر ، وتعزيز موقفه لأن رئيس وزراء منتخب وتستمر لآخر اربع او خمس سنوات. Instead the local elections in parts of England, Wales and London on 1 May, alongside the Crewe and Nantwich by-election, were terrible defeats for Labour. وبدلا من الانتخابات المحلية في اجزاء من انكلترا وويلز ولندن في 1 ايار / مايو ، جنبا الى جنب مع Crewe وNantwich من قبل الانتخابات ، كانت الهزائم المروعه لليد العاملة. These elections mark a watershed in a number of ways. هذه الانتخابات حدا فاصلا فى عدد من الطرق. Most importantly, they presage the return of a Tory government for the first time in more than a decade. والأهم من ذلك انهم النذير عودة من المحافظ الحكومة للمرة الاولى منذ اكثر من عقد من الزمان. May also saw the election of a Tory mayor, after eight years in office for Ken Livingstone, who won first as an independent against Labour in 2000, and then as the Labour candidate four years later. وقد شهدت ايضا انتخاب رئيس البلدية من المحافظ ، بعد ثماني سنوات في مكتب لكين ليفينغستون ، فاز اول من كدوله مستقلة في عام 2000 ضد العمل ، ثم العمل على النحو مرشح اربع سنوات في وقت لاحق. Alongside the election of Boris Johnson, the fascist BNP won a seat on the London Assembly. جنبا الى جنب مع انتخاب بوريس جونسون ، BNP الفاشي وفاز بمقعد في لندن للجمعية العامة.
None of this is good news for the left. ان ايا من هذه انباء طيبة بالنسبة لليسار. While some right wing candidates made advances in the London elections (the notable exceptions being UKIP and the English Democrats) candidates from the Lib Dems leftwards either lost votes or only just maintained their previous ground (as in the case of the Greens). وفي حين ان بعض المرشحين اليميني تقدما في الانتخابات لندن (الاستثناءات البارزة يجري ukip والانجليزيه الديموقراطي) مرشحين من مكتبه dems على اليسار اما فقدوا الاصوات فقط أو مجرد الحفاظ على ارض الواقع لما كانت عليه في السابق (كما هو الحال في الخضر).
It would, however, be a mistake to see the result as simply a shift to the right. بيد انه يكون من الخطأ ان نرى بأنها مجرد نتيجة لتحول الى اليمين. Much more it represented a collapse of support for Labour with the Tories being the main beneficiaries. انها تمثل اكثر بكثير من انهيار لدعم العمل مع عة هي المستفيده الرئيسية. Why did that happen? لماذا حدث ذلك؟ Firstly, the election as a whole was fought on the basis of right wing politics. اولا ، ان الانتخابات ككل كان يحارب على اساس سياسة الجناح اليميني. Crime and immigration dominated the issues being discussed, and this was a deliberate decision on the part of the main parties. الجريمة والهجره وسيطر على القضايا التي تجري مناقشتها ، وكان ذلك على قرار متعمد من جانب الأطراف الرئيسية. When that happens it is much harder for a space to the left to open up, especially when Labour goes along with the consensus of more police on the streets and being tougher on crime. وعندما يحدث ذلك وهي اصعب بكثير لالفضاء الى اليسار لفتح ، وبخاصه عندما غنى عن العمل جنبا الى جنب مع اكثر من توافق في الاراء على الشرطة في الشوارع ، ويجرى اكثر صرامه بشأن الجريمة.
More fundamentally, traditional Labour voters were punishing Labour for the 10p tax, the rise of food and utility prices, the housing crisis and much more besides. والأهم من ذلك ، كان على الناخبين ان العمل التقليديه معاقبة العمل لضريبة 10p ، والمواد الغذاءيه وارتفاع اسعار الفاءده ، وأزمة السكن الى جانب اكثر بكثير. In the circumstances of a right wing and unpopular Labour government, staggering on after 11 wasted years, it is unsurprising that some voters saw little difference between Labour and the Tories. وفي ظل هذه الظروف من الجناح اليميني وغير شعبية حكومة حزب العمال ، على بعد 11 مذهله تضيع سنوات ، ومن الدهشه ان بعض الناخبين شهدت الفارق ضئيل بين العمال والمحافظون.
It is instructive to consider two feature articles which both appeared on the same day a week after the election results. ومن المفيد النظر في رسالتين والمقالات الصحفيه التي ظهرت على حد سواء وفى نفس اليوم بعد مرور اسبوع على نتائج الانتخابات. One, by Ken Livingstone in the Guardian , heralded his support for and in the City of London. واحد ، كين ليفينغستون في صحيفة الغارديان ، عن تأييده للبشر وفي مدينة لندن. The second, by David Cameron in the Independent , appealed to all those who were progressive on green or equality issues to join the Tories. الثانية ، من قبل ديفيد كاميرون في المستقل ، نداء الى جميع من تلك كانت خضراء او التدريجي على قضايا المساواة للانضمام الى عة. No wonder voters were confused. ولا عجب اذا كان على الناخبين ان الخلط.
At the same time as these electoral gains for the right, there was another story during the election period. في نفس الوقت هذه المكاسب الانتخابية من اجل الحق ، وكأن هناك قصة أخرى خلال فترة الانتخابات. Teachers, lecturers and civil servants struck and demonstrated on 24 April. والمعلمين واساتذة وموظفي الخدمة المدنيه واظهرت ضربت في 24 نيسان / ابريل. The demonstrations on that day were some of the youngest and most militant workers’ demonstrations for at least a generation. تظاهرات في ذلك اليوم كانت بعض من أصغر وأكثر المقاتله العمال تظاهرات من اجل جيل واحد على الاقل.
The carnival held in London’s Victoria Park the weekend before the elections attracted 100,000 in opposition to the BNP . الكرنفال الذي عقد في لندن فيكتوريا بارك عطلة نهاية الاسبوع قبل الانتخابات اجتذبت 100000 في المعارضة الى BNP.
Immigration الهجره
In addition, there is no evidence that attitudes on a range of issues – from privatisation to war – have changed in the course of the election or that the results are likely to lead to such a change of views. وبالاضافة الى ذلك ، ليس هناك اي دليل على ان المواقف بشأن مجموعة من القضايا -- من الخصخصه الى الحرب -- قد تغيرت في اثناء الانتخابات او ان النتائج التي يرجح ان تؤدي الى مثل هذا التغيير وجهات النظر. In many instances the general public remains to the left of politicians on these questions and on many more. وفي كثير من الحالات لا يزال الجمهور العام الى اليسار من السياسيين على هذه الاسءله واخرى كثيرة. There is one major exception to this – immigration. وثمة استثناء رئيسي لهذا -- الهجره.
The consensus here is much more right wing, with even those who claim to be anti-racist and pro-diversity (which even Tories like Johnson now boast) saying that there have to be limits on immigration. توافق الاراء هنا اكبر من ذلك بكثير اليمين ، حتى تلك التي تدعي انها من المناهضه للعنصرية والمؤيدة للالتنوع (الذي مثل جونسون المحافظون حتى الآن ان تفخر) قوله ان يتعين ان تكون هناك قيود على الهجره. Or, as it’s sometimes put, “the country’s full up”. أو ، كما انه وضع في بعض الاحيان ، "البلد حتى الكامل". This, plus the growing wave of Islamophobia, has given a base for the BNP to grow. هذا ، بالاضافة الى تزايد موجة من الخوف من الاسلام ، قد اعطي للقاعدة BNP ان تنمو. Even liberal opinion has played its part in this. وحتى الليبراليه الرأي لعب دوره في ذلك. The BBC’s White Season showed a concern for the “white working class” not evident when reporting strikes, or the class bias in education, or the housing crisis. هيئة الاذاعة البريطانية البيضاء للموسم اظهرت الاهتمام البيض "الطبقة العاملة" ليست واضحة عند الابلاغ عن الاضرابات ، او الطبقة التحيز في التعليم ، أو أزمة السكن.
Even in the case of the BNP vote, however, it is clear that for many it represented a protest against the Labour government by people who felt they had been ignored or left behind by Labour. وحتى في حالة BNP للتصويت ، إلا أنه من الواضح انه بالنسبة للكثير من انها تمثل احتجاجا على حكومة حزب العمال من قبل الشعب من يرون أنهم قد تم تجاهلها أو تركها العمل. That does not mean we should dismiss the vote. هذا لا يعني اننا ينبغي ان رفض التصويت. While the proportion of the vote was not much higher than four years ago, the absolute number of votes was higher, and the election of an assembly member for the BNP gives them a profile and a level of confidence which they have not had in London for many years. في حين ان نسبة من الاصوات كانت ليست اعلى بكثير من قبل أربع سنوات ، فإن العدد المطلق للأعلى الأصوات ، وانتخاب عضو في جمعية لBNP يعطيها لمحة عن ومستوى من الثقة التي لم يكن لها في لندن لل منذ سنوات عديدة.
The BNP vote also highlights the contradictory nature of the politics in the recent elections. وقد BNP التصويت كما يسلط الضوء على الطابع المتناقض للسياسة في الانتخابات الاخيرة. There is a sense of frustration and disgust with the policies of the mainstream parties and politicians, who are widely seen as corrupt and only in it for themselves, and this sentiment can be channelled in different directions. وهناك شعور بالاحباط والاشمئزاز مع التيار الرئيسي للسياسات الاحزاب والسياسيين ، من ينظر اليه على نطاق واسع الا في فاسدة وانها لأنفسهم ، وهذا الشعور يمكن توجيهها في اتجاهات مختلفة. In these last elections the main beneficiaries were right wing parties, particularly over the question of immigration. في هذه الانتخابات الأخيرة كانت المستفيد الرئيسي اليميني الاطراف ، ولا سيما حول مسألة الهجره. But this was at least partly because the main parties have taken up and promoted anti-immigrant policies. ولكن ذلك كان ، على الأقل جزئيا ، لان الاطراف الرئيسية التي اتخذتها وتعزيز السياسات المناهضه للمهاجرين.
Most shamefully, New Labour continued to do so in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election, held just weeks after the local elections. معظم مخجله ، واصلت العمل الجديد على ان تفعل ذلك في Crewe وNantwich بها الانتخابات ، التي عقدت بعد اسابيع من الانتخابات المحلية. Literature for the Labour candidate highlighted “concerns” over immigration and invited voters to consider, “What do you think is the biggest problem facing the area?” offering “immigration” as a tick box reply. مراجع لمرشح العمل الضوء على "القلق" حول الهجره ، ودعت الناخبين الى النظر في "ما هو هل تعتقد ان المشكلة الكبرى التي تواجه المنطقة؟" تقدم "الهجره" كما وضع علامة مربع الرد.
The left failed to meet the challenge presented by this election. اليسار فشل في مواجهة التحدي الذي قدمه لهذا الانتخاب. In London it became a Boris and Ken show, with little substantive differences on most policies, and some of those not to Labour’s advantage (for example on ID cards or conductors on buses). في لندن بعد أن أصبح بوريس كين وتبين ، مع قليل من الفوارق من حيث المضمون عن معظم السياسات ، وبعض هذه ليست لمصلحة العمل (على سبيل المثال على بطاقات الهوية او على قادة الحافلات). The other parties were squeezed, especially UKIP whose vote fell most dramatically from over 100,000 to just over 20,000 and who lost two seats previously held on the assembly; and the vote I received in 2004 for Respect at around 61,000 first preferences fell to under 17,000 this time. وكانت الاطراف الاخرى في عصره ، ولا سيما ukip التصويت الذي سقط معظم هاءله من اكثر من 100000 الى ما يزيد قليلا عن 20000 وفقدت اثنين من المقاعد التي سبق عقدها على الجمعية العامة والتصويت وصلتني في عام 2004 من اجل احترام الاولى عند حوالى 61000 انخفضت الى الافضليات في اطار هذا 17000 وقت. It’s clear that many voters did not want to risk voting for a smaller party for mayor in case it led to the defeat of their favoured candidate. ومن الواضح ان كثيرا من الناخبين لا يريدون ان خطر التصويت لحزب لأصغر رئيس بلدية في حال أدت الى الهزيمة من يحبذ المرشح.
While this squeeze affected the votes for mayor, the split in Respect and the divisions on the left did no one any favours in the list elections when they were in direct competition. وفي حين ان هذه الضائقة المتضرره الاصوات لرئيس البلدية ، والانشقاق في احترام الشعب وعلى اليسار لم تؤيد اي لا احد في لائحة الانتخابات عندما كانت في منافسة مباشرة. The left vote was therefore split in London, with neither the Left List nor George Galloway’s Respect getting close to winning. اليسار ولذلك جرى التصويت سبليت في لندن ، لا مع اليسار ولا قائمة على احترام جورج غالاوي في الحصول على ما يقرب من الفوز. There was clearly great confusion over the name. ومن الواضح ان هناك قدر كبير من الخلط حول اسم. In addition, any division leads to political confusion with some people taking the view that they will vote for neither. وبالاضافة الى ذلك ، اي تقسيم سياسي يؤدي الى الالتباس مع بعض الناس ، باعتبار ان لانهم سيصوتون لللا. The Left List vote was disappointing. اليسار قائمة التصويت كانت مخيبه للآمال. It is clear that the weeks which we had to publicise a new name were not sufficient and that some people voted for Respect thinking they were voting for us. ومن الواضح ان الاسابيع التي كان علينا ان publicise اسم جديد ليست كافية ، وان بعض الناس صوتوا لصالح احترام التفكير كانت نتيجة التصويت بالنسبة لنا.
It was, however, right to stand in the elections. غير انه ، الحق في الترشيح في الانتخابات. When we took part in hustings we made a real impact, helped to pull the campaign to the left and put distinctive policies on housing, crime and immigration onto the agenda. عندما شاركنا في hustings التي قطعناها على أنفسنا تأثير حقيقي ، وساعد على اخراج الحملة على اليسار ووضع السياسات المتعلقة بالاسكان المتميزة والجريمة والهجره على جدول الاعمال. We were also able to intervene around the teachers’ strikes and against the BNP putting a political alternative. وكنا ايضا قادرين على التدخل في جميع انحاء المعلمين والضربات ضد BNP طرح بديل سياسي. It would have been wrong to take part in an election campaign where no one challenged the dominant consensus. انه كان من الخطأ ان يشارك في الحملة الانتخابية حيث لا يتعرض اي شخص تحديات المهيمن الى توافق في الاراء.
At the same time, it was also right not to put all our emphasis on elections. وفي الوقت نفسه ، كما انه لا حق لوضع كل تركيزنا على الانتخابات. Elections are a very useful snapshot of consciousness among working class people at any one time, but they don’t tell the whole story. الانتخابات هي مفيدة جدا لقطة من وعي الطبقة العاملة فيما بين الناس في اي وقت من الاوقات ، ولكنها لا تروى القصة بأكملها. Of necessity, they reflect the past more than the present in the sense that people still vote mostly on past loyalties or on issues which particular parties have or have not taken up in the past. وبحكم الضروره ، وهي تعكس الماضي اكثر من هذا في بمعنى ان الناس لا يزالون في التصويت في معظم الاحيان على الماضي او على ولاءات القضايا ولا سيما الاطراف التي لها ، او لم تتخذ في الماضي. The different groups of workers going on strike over pay, or the 100,000 who attended the carnival, or those becoming radicalised over the banking and economic crisis and the high cost of food and commodities, or the students who have campaigned for fighting unions, have a specific weight regardless of if or how they vote. مختلف مجموعات العمال في الاضراب أكثر من الذهاب على الدفع ، او 100000 من حضر الكرنفال ، أو تلك التي أصبحت أكثر radicalised المصرفي والازمة الاقتصادية وارتفاع تكاليف الغذاء والسلع الاساسية ، او الطلاب من قد قام بحملة لمكافحة النقابات ، ويكون لها الوزن محددة بغض النظر عن كيفية أو إذا كان التصويت.
Any socialist or left organisation has to relate to them, as well as to ethnic minorities suffering immigration raids, or the Muslim community suffering racism and attacks on civil liberties. اليسار الاشتراكي أو أي منظمة ان تتصل بها ، وكذلك الى الاقليات الاثنيه معاناة الهجره الغارات ، أو معاناة الجاليه المسلمه العنصريه والاعتداءات على الحريات المدنيه. Opposition to the war continues, as does defence of women’s rights, especially over abortion and the reactionary attempt to reduce the time limit. معارضة الحرب مستمرة ، وكذلك الدفاع عن حقوق المراه ، لا سيما على مدى الرجعيه والاجهاض ، ومحاولة للحد من الوقت المحدد. The outcome of the various struggles that take place in the coming months can have a greater impact on the balance of class forces, on people’s lives and their willingness to engage in further struggle than where they put their cross on a ballot paper. نتائج مختلف الصراعات التي تجري في الاشهر القادمة يمكن ان يكون لها اثر اكبر على ميزان القوى الطبقيه ، وعلى حياة الناس واستعدادها للدخول في مزيد من النضال من حيث ترتب وضعها الصليب على ورقة الاقتراع.
Where does the left go from here? أين نذهب من هنا ترك؟ Firstly, this is a time when many on the left want to discuss why Livingstone lost, whether a Tory government is inevitable and how the left can organise to defend ourselves. أولا ، هذا وقت كثير على اليسار ترغب في مناقشة لماذا خسر ليفينغستون ، ما اذا كان المحافظ الحكومة امر لا مفر منه ، وكيف يمكن تنظيم اليسار للدفاع عن انفسنا. We have had nearly a decade when the movement has seemed on the rise, since Seattle in 1999, and this is a reverse which requires explanation and serious analysis if it is not to lead some to despair. لقد كان ما يقرب من عقد من الزمن عندما بدأ الحركة على ارتفاع ، ومنذ سياتل فى عام 1999 ، وهذا هو عكس الذي يتطلب تحليلا دقيقا لشرح واذا لم يكن ليؤدي الى بعض اليأس.

But that activity on its own is not enough. ولكن هذا النشاط على حد ذاته لا يكفي. We also need political solutions to the major ideological and political questions that face us. نحن بحاجة ايضا الى التوصل الى حلول سياسية كبرى ايديولوجيه وسياسية الاسءله التي تواجهنا. Socialists are well placed to do this: we have a set of ideas which attempt to understand the world in order to change it, also because we take a wider view of the working class movement. الاشتراكيون هم في وضع جيد للقيام بذلك : لدينا مجموعة من الافكار التي تنطوي على محاولة لفهم العالم من اجل تغييره ، لأننا ايضا اتخاذ نظرة اوسع للحركة الطبقة العاملة.
The crucial questions facing the movement today are how do we develop successful struggles and how do we build an alternative to Labour which has so badly failed generations of working people? المسائل الحاسمه التي تواجه حركة اليوم هي كيف يمكن لنا ان النجاح في تطوير النضال وكيف نبني بديلا عن العمل الذي فشل في اشد أجيال من الشعب العامل؟ The election results were bad for the left overall in London – although even here there were some very good votes in north and east London which show the left can present an alternative – but in parts of the country the results were extremely good, for example in Sheffield and Preston. نتائج الانتخابات كانت سيئة لليسار عموما في لندن -- وحتى في هذا المجال على الرغم من وجود بعض الأصوات جيدة جدا في شمال وشرق لندن التي تظهر هذا يمكن ان يترك بديلا -- ولكن في أجزاء من البلاد وكانت النتائج جيدة للغاية ، على سبيل المثال في شيفيلد وبريستون. Other results, for example the anti-academies councillors in Barrow, who won four seats, show there is space to the left of Labour that needs to be filled. نتائج أخرى ، على سبيل المثال المضاده للاكاديميات في المجالس بارو ، وفاز من اربعة مقاعد ، ويتضح ان هناك الفضاء الى اليسار من العمل الذي يتعين ملؤها.
That is why it would be a mistake to abandon the electoral field, and why the Left List should continue to organise locally, through meetings, networks and activities which can allow us to build a base in the localities. وهذا هو السبب في انه سيكون من الخطأ التخلي عن الميدان الانتخابي ، وقائمة اليسار لماذا ينبغي ان يستمر التنظيم محليا ، من خلال الاجتماعات ، والشبكات والانشطه التي يمكن ان تسمح لنا لبناء قاعدة فى المحليات. In London we began to establish very good networks among different ethnic minorities and trade unionists, but in this election they did not translate into votes. ونحن فى لندن بدأت جيدة جدا لاقامة الشبكات بين مختلف الاقليات العرقيه والنقابيين ، ولكن في هذه الانتخابات انها لم تترجم الى اصوات. We have to build on our areas of success to find a way of winning more votes in future. علينا ان نبني اعمالنا مجالات النجاح لايجاد طريقة لكسب اصوات اكثر في المستقبل.
The left also needs to build links and organisation on every issue which confronts us – war, fascism, a growing housing crisis, attacks on living standards – which at present will fall short of total electoral or programmatic unity, but which should aim to go beyond single-issue campaigns. اليسار تحتاج ايضا الى بناء روابط ومنظمة على كل المسائل التي تواجهنا -- الحرب ، الفاشيه ، تزايد أزمة السكن ، والاعتداءات على مستويات المعيشة -- فى الوقت الحاضر والتي ستقل من مجموع الانتخابية او برنامجية وحده ، ولكن الذي ينبغي أن تهدف الى تجاوز - حملات قضية واحدة. Labour MP John McDonnell has put forward a list of demands that Labour should adopt to win the next election and these sorts of issues are ones which can unite the left. العمل النائب جون ماكدونيل وقد طرح لائحة المطالب التي ينبغي ان تعتمد العمل للفوز في الانتخابات المقبلة وهذه الانواع من القضايا هي تلك التي يمكن ان توحد اليسار.
Finally, socialists are too few in number to bring about the changes and policies we need. واخيرا ، الاشتراكيين هي قليلة جدا في عدد لاحداث التغييرات والسياسات التي نحتاج اليها. That has to change, both by winning more people directly to socialist ideas, and by deepening our influence where we can make a difference and where we have already shown the importance of socialist organisation. يتعين ان يتغير ، سواء من جانب كسب عدد أكبر من الناس مباشرة الى الافكار الاشتراكيه ، وعن طريق تعميق تأثيرنا حيث يمكننا ان نحدث فيها الفرق ولقد سبق ان بينت اهمية منظمة الاشتراكيه. That also means spreading our influence geographically, especially to areas such as outer London where the fascists have gained support in recent years. وهذا يعني ايضا نشر تأثيرنا جغرافيا ، ولا سيما إلى مناطق مثل الخارجي لندن حيث اكتسبت الفاشيون الدعم في السنوات الاخيرة.
The world is changing very fast. العالم يتغير بسرعة كبيرة. We do not know the full extent of the economic crisis – only that it is already affecting jobs, wages and housing. نحن لا نعرف المدى الكامل للأزمة الاقتصادية -- الا انها بالفعل تؤثر على الوظائف والاجور والسكن.
