Lhasa, Tibet - China’s secret police are just terrible at keeping themselves secret. لاسا ، التبت -- الشرطة السرية في الصين هي مجرد الرهيب في حفظ انفسهم سرا.

I assured him that Clinton, though not quite holy, would, at the least, help Tibetans. الاول أكد له أن كلينتون ، ولكن ليس تماما المقدسة ، من شأنه ، على الأقل ، تساعد اهالى التبت.

I assured the monk that this new President would help them obtain just a bit of autonomy in the “Tibetan Autonomous Region,” as China calls it. وأكدت أن هذا الراهب الرئىس الجديد من شأنه ان يساعدها على مجرد الحصول على القليل من الاستقلالية في "منطقة التبت المتمتعه بالحكم الذاتي" كما تدعو الصين.
The lama smiled. ابتسم فان لاما. It was not cynicism but a friendly disbelief in change happening in this coming year. انها ليست السخريه ولكن كفرا ودية في هذا التغيير يحدث فى العام القادم. He measured change in lifetimes. وقال انه قياس التغيير في الاعمار.
He asked a student monk to pull down a small painted statue of the Buddha - which the elder man then chopped apart with a knife. وسأل أحد الطلاب الى راهب افتح صغير يرسم تمثال للبوذا -- الاكبر الذي المفروم ثم الى جانب رجل بسكين. He then gestured to his acolyte to give us each a piece of the icon - to eat. ثم موما لصاحب المساعد ليقدم لنا كل قطعة من الايقونه -- للأكل.
Swallowing the body of his Lord was not meant to make us holy but to solve a more immediate problem - lunch. بلعة الجسم من ربه لا يقصد ان تجعلنا المقدسة ولكن حل هذه المشكلة اكثر الحاحا -- طعام الغداء. The painted god, I discovered with relief, was made out of barley, beer, rancid butter and honey. وقد رسمها الله ، اكتشفت مع الدين ، كان من الشعير ، والجعه ، rancid زبدة وعسل.
I could see that my Tibetan translator was chomping at the bit to show the old man messages we’d brought from the Dalai Lama’s Secretariat in India. انني يمكن ان نرى أن المترجم كان بلدي التبت فى قضم بصوت عالي قليلا لاظهار الرسائل رجل يبلغ من العمر كنا جلبه من الدالاي لاما امانة في الهند. But that would have been suicide. ولكن كان من الممكن ان الانتحار. The young translator’s brother (I certainly won’t use their names), a cook at a nearby temple, joined a demonstration of monks against Chinese rule and was shot dead. المترجم الشاب شقيق (أنني بالتأكيد لن تستخدم اسمائهم) ، وكوك في معبد قريب ، انضم الى مظاهرة من الرهبان ضد الحكم الصيني وقتل بالرصاص. The point of our heading deep into Tibet’s wastelands was to spread the word that the Dalai Lama hadn’t abandoned his people as the Chinese propagandists told them on radio, on loudspeakers, and through their local quislings. لدينا وجهة البند التبت فى عمق الاراضى المقفره وكان لنشر الكلمه ان الدالاي لاما لم تتخل عن شعبه وكما قال لهم الدعايه الصينية في الاذاعة ، على مكبرات الصوت ، ومجتمعاتهم المحلية من خلال quislings. (My favorite notice was a warning by Chinese authorities that they must “approve all re-incarnations.” That was meant to avoid the Dalai Lama locating the new child containing the soul of the Panchen Lama, the Dalai Lama’s missing, and obviously murdered, number two man.) (المفضل الاشعار تحذير من جانب السلطات الصينية انه يجب عليها ان "الموافقة على اعادة جميع التجسيد." الذي كان القصد منه ان الدالاي لاما تجنب تحديد موقع الطفل الجديد الذي يتضمن الروح من panchen لاما ، الدالاي لاما للالمفقودين ، وواضح قتل عدد اثنين من رجل.)
On to another monastery with the postcard and the message. الى دير اخر مع البطاقات البريديه والرسالة. The old nuns would put the postcard over their eyes and forehead and turn to bow into the sun’s rays, the symbol of Free Tibet. الراهبات القديم من شأنه ان يضع البطاقات البريديه اكثر من عيونهم وانتقل الى الجبهة وأنحني اجلالا واكبارا الى اشعه الشمس ، رمزا للحرية التبت.
One monastery was quiet. وكان للدير واحد من الهدوء. In a land where you see the clouds below you, not above, sunlight is brutally harsh. في أرض حيث كنت انظر ادناه ، فانك الغيوم ، وليس اعلاه ، من اشعه الشمس وحشية قاسيه. Every image stands out in painful, unforgettable clarity. كل تبرز في صورة مؤلمة لا تنسى الوضوح. This emptied place had been smashed into ruins by the Red Guards. هذا المكان قد افرغت حطم الى ركام من قبل الحرس الاحمر. They’d arrested all the monks they hadn’t gunned down, some of the 200,000 Tibetans killed by the Chinese in their ethnic “re-education” campaign. انها تريد القبض على جميع الرهبان انهم لم اطلق اسفل ، 200000 بعض من اهالى التبت الذين قتلوا على يد العرقيه الصينية فى "اعادة التثقيف" الحملة.

On the way to the Lhasa airport, leaving those occupied territories, I thought I could see, looking into the harsh glare, the Buddhist hermitage just below the Himalayan crest. على الطريق الى مطار لاسا ، تاركة هذه الاراضي المحتلة ، واعتقدت انني يمكن أن نرى ، والتطلع الى وهج قاسيه ، البوذيه الارميتاج اقل بقليل من قمة جبال الهمالايا.
