Germany were the first team in World Cup history to finish 3rd on consecutive World Cup tournaments after defeating Uruguay 3-2 in a tightly contested game at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The game started with a rather cautious approach by both teams as each was keen not to concede first.
After 19 minutes of entertaining football, Tomas Mueller opened the account for the Germans by scoring his 5th goal of the tournament after the Uruguay goal keeper failed to properly deal with a Batian Shweinsteiger long range shot.
Uruguay responded in the 28th minute with a counter attack that ended in a goal through Edinson Cavani. In the 51st minute, Diego Forlan put Uruguay ahead with a spectacular goal that took his tally to 5 goals in the tournament but just 5 minutes later, German were back on level terms as Marcelll Jensen scored from a header.
With 8 minutes to the end of game, Sami Khedira scored German’s 3rd and final goal after a corner kick that created confusion in the Uruguay defense. All eyes will now turn to the final on Sunday between Netherlands and Spain.
