Monday, April 21st, 2008
Jeffery A. Miron finds that by decriminalizing cannabis, the federal government would generate $2.4 billion in federal tax revenue annually, and that an additional $7.7 billion would be saved as the cost of incarceration, policing, and processing offenders. Now, that’s too much money to for the human brain to fully conceptualize, given the air quality around April 20th, so your friends at the Prometheus Institute have provided this handy quantitive index in order to show exactly how much the U.S. can earn each year from cannabis decriminalization. The math: $2.4 billion per year + $7.7 billion per year = $10.1 billion gained in total per year. You’re welcome.
The $10.1 billion dollars could, for those who are interested, do any of the following: • Subsidize a school voucher system for half of the U.S., for good reason Have Your Say: Decriminalising Pot Would Save $10 Billion a Year Please read our posting guidelines before posting. From my days in San Francisco during the mid 1960’s we often dreamed that by the year 1980 we would be able to go into a store and buy a pack of pre-rolled weed of our choice with no problem. Legalization would stop the drain on our economy of trying to stop a crop that will neve be eradicated and if legalized the government could place rules on it’s use just as alcohol and could tax on it’s purchase therefore bringing in billions of dollars annually,I would venture to say,r which could be used to fund any number of programs including Social Security. The proper use of marijuana in my opinion is certainly less dangerous than alcohol. How many headlines have you read that state “MAN GOES BESERK AND KILLS WHOLE FAMILY AFTER SMOKING A JOINT”? The medicinal use of it for pain and such is phenomenal and yet even those people who are given a script are hassled and abused. Farmes could grow cash crops and the plants could be used in so many ways. As far as I can tell this whole eradication process is due to the government not wanting it legalized because SOMEONE somewhere is making a great deal of money off it it being illegal. Until the American people band together and vote for legaliztion it will remain just what it is now- criminal consequences for using a helpful substance. When I saw what it did for my sister as she died from cancer I became a true fan of it as a pain reducer, relaxant and appetite increaser. This is just another example of our tax dollars being wasted and put into the pockets of high officials. Just my 2 cents worth.
