I do not wish to engage in a debate about the Iraq War. انني لا ارغب في الخوض في جدال بشأن حرب العراق. But the thought of planting a largely Christian army in the middle of the Muslim Middle East over the opposition of most countries in the region, when put as I have just put it, sounds daft. ولكن من زرع الفكر المسيحي الجيش الى حد كبير في وسط الشرق الاوسط المسلم اكثر من المعارضة من معظم البلدان في المنطقة ، عندما توضع كما ذكرت منذ قليل على حد ، daft الاصوات. It was the triumph of myth over logic. انه انتصار للمنطق أكثر من اسطوره.
Why were Americans so susceptible to myth? لماذا لم تصدر حتى الاميركيين عرضة للاسطوره؟ Foreign policy specialists don’t usually spend a lot of time reflecting on this question. السياسة الخارجية المتخصصين عادة لا تنفق الكثير من الوقت في التفكير في هذه المساله. They should. وينبغي لها. Unlike subjects with which they have first-hand experience–think gas prices–matters related to foreign countries are both exotic and incomprehensible to most Americans. وخلافا للالمواضيع التي لها اول تجربة مباشرة التفكير في أسعار الغاز - في المسائل ذات الصلة الى البلدان الاجنبية على حد سواء غريبة وغير مفهومة لمعظم الاميركيين. This leaves them sitting ducks for wily pols who want to take advantage of their ignorance by playing on fear and patriotism. وهذا يترك لهم الجلوس البط لمكار pols من يريد الاستفادة من جهلهم بها اللعب على الخوف ووطنيه.
The extent of Americans’ ignorance is underestimated. الاميركيون مدى جهل هو التقليل من شأنها. Only two in five know we have three branches of government and can name them. اثنان فقط في خمس ولدينا معرفة الفروع الثلاثة للحكومة ويمكن لها اسم. Only one in five know there are 100 US senators. واحدة فقط في خمس نعرف ان هناك 100 اعضاء مجلس الشيوخ الامريكى. And five years into the war in Iraq only one in seven can find Iraq on a map. وبعد خمس سنوات من الحرب في العراق الا واحدا من كل سبعة يمكن ان تجد العراق على الخريطه. Someone once said–the author is in dispute–that war is God’s way of teaching Americans geography. ذات مرة قال احدهم - صاحب البلاغ هو في النزاع - ان الحرب هي طريقة الله من الاميركيين تدريس الجغرافيا. It’sa great line, but rather optimistic. It'sa كبيرة الخط ولكن متفاءله الى حد ما. A majority of Americans still haven’t bothered to take a look at the map of the country where we have been bombing and killing people since 1991. غالبية الاميركيين لا تزال لم ازعجت لالقاء نظرة على خريطه البلد اين كنا والقصف وقتل الناس منذ عام 1991.
Not all is grim. ليست كلها قاتمه. On the positive side, Americans did not make wholly irrational demands of their leaders after 9/11. وعلى الجانب الايجابي ، الامريكان لم تقدم مطالب غير منطقيه تماما من قادتهم بعد 9 / 11. American Muslims were not rounded up and sent to concentration camps after 9/11 (as Japanese-Americans were after Pearl Harbor). المسلمين الامريكيين لم جمعوا وأرسلوا الى معسكرات الاعتقال بعد 9 / 11) كما كان على الأميركيين اليابانيين بعد بيرل هاربور). Given what has happened in American history any one of these responses or all of them might have been anticipated. وبالنظر الى ما حدث في التاريخ الاميركي اي واحد من هذه الردود أو لهم جميعا ربما كان متوقعا. That none occurred and that nothing like them occurred is worth noting. ان لا شيء يحدث وانه ليس مثلهم وتجدر الاشارة الى حدث.
But polls indicate that a significant segment of the American public was susceptible to wild conspiracy theories. ولكن استطلاعات الرأي تشير الى ان قطاع كبير من الرأي العام الاميركي وكان عرضه لنظريات المءامره البرية. A Scripps-Howard poll in 2006 found that 36 percent believe that it is “very likely” or “somewhat likely” that US officials either allowed the attack to take place or were involved it. أ - سكريبس هوارد في عام 2006 ووجد الاستطلاع ان 36 في المئة نعتقد انه من "المرجح جدا" او "الى حد ما يرجح" ان المسؤولين الامريكيين اما السماح لهذا الهجوم ان يتم ارتكابها او كانوا ضالعين فيها.
Americans do not have a monopoly on conspiracy thinking. الاميركيين لا يكون حكرا على مءامره التفكير. Nineteen percent of Germans said in a 2004 poll that 9/11 was the work of the CIA and Israel’s Mossad. تسعة عشر في المئة من الالمان في 2004 وقال الاستطلاع ان 9 / 11 هو عمل من وكالة المخابرات المركزية والموساد لاسرائيل. The French turned Thierry Meyssan’s book The Appalling Fraud into a best-seller, despite the absence of evidence for its chief and crazy claim: that the Pentagon attacked itself on 9/11 with a cruise missile. الفرنسي تييري ميسان تحولت كتاب المروعه الاحتيال الى افضل البائع ، بالرغم من عدم وجود أدلة لرئيس مجنونة والمطالبة : ان البنتاجون نفسه على هجوم 9 / 11 مع صواريخ كروز. Millions of Muslims around the world persist in believing that Jews were given advance warning of the attack on the World Trade Center. الملايين من المسلمين في انحاء العالم ما زالت قائمة في الاعتقاد أن اليهود كانوا ونظرا لانذار مسبق من الهجوم على مركز التجارة العالمي.
But instead of the thoughtful debate we should by rights have had in this country, we settled for slogans: ولكن بدلا من التفكير وعلينا ان النقاش كان لها من قبل الانسان في هذا البلد ، ونحن لتسوية الشعارات :
We must fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here يجب علينا ان نكافح لهم هناك اكثر من ذلك ليس لدينا لمكافحة منهم أكثر من هنا

You are either with us or with the terrorists اما انت معنا او مع الارهابيين

To be sure the public eventually turned against Mr. Bush’s war in Iraq. ومن المؤكد ان الجمهور في نهاية المطاف تحول ضد السيد بوش الحرب فى العراق. The one thing the public usually gets is success and failure. الشيء الوحيد الذي يحصل عادة الجمهور هو النجاح والفشل. And Mr. Bush’s war has been a spectacular failure when judged against all of the many measures by which he has asked us to judge it. والسيد بوش الحرب كانت مذهله عندما فشل الحكم ضد كل من العديد من التدابير التي قال انه قد طلب منا ان القاضي.
As we head into the Fall campaign and listen to the debates about the war we should keep in mind the limits of public opinion. ونحن الى سقوط رئيس الحملة واستمع الى المناقشات حول الحرب ينبغي ان نضع في الاعتبار حدود للرأي العام. If we don’t begin to address the problem of gross public ignorance there will be more Iraqs. واذا لم نفعل ذلك أبدا لمعالجة هذه المشكلة من الناتج العامة الجهل سيكون هناك مزيد من iraqs.
One poll finding we should all keep in mind is this. استطلاع للالعثور على واحد وعلينا جميعا ان نضع في اعتبارنا هذا هو. Even after the 9/11 Commission reported that there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and the Sept. 11 attack 50 percent of the country persisted in believing there was. وحتى بعد 9 / 11 وأفادت اللجنة انه لا توجد صلة بين صدام حسين وهجوم 11 أيلول / سبتمبر 50 فى المائة من اراضى البلاد لا تزال قائمة وكان هناك في الاعتقاد. The implications of this are mind boggling. الآثار المترتبة على هذا الاعتبار هي محيرة.
