Can Marijuana help memory?

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Elements found in marijuana can be beneficial to ageing brains and can even stimulate the growth of new brain cells - according to Ohio State University scientists.

Their research suggests that a legal drug derived from marijuana could even be used to slow down the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

The medicinal properties of cannabis is contained in tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC, which is the main psychoactive element the dope plant contains.

Principal researcher and Ohio University professor, Gary Wenk, said THC in small doses can give some protection against inflammation of the brain.

“It’s not that everything immoral is good for the brain,” he said. “It’s just that there are some substances that millions of people for thousands of years have used in billions of doses, and we’re noticing there’s a little signal above all the noise.”

Professor Wenk has recorded improved memory in animals exposed to a synthetic form of THC.

His research team are now trying to find out why and how it works.

They already know that THC can reduce brain inflammation and promote the production of new neurons, or brain cells.

“Knowing exactly how any of these compounds work in the brain can make it easier for drug designers to target specific systems with agents that will offer the most effective anti-aging benefits,” said Professor Wenk.

The professor would not rule out that smoking dope may prevent Alzheimer’s disease if the disease is in a person’s family history.

“It might actually work,” he said. “What we are saying is it appears that a safe, legal substance that mimics those important properties of marijuana can work on receptors in the brain to prevent memory impairments in aging. So that’s really hopeful.”

But one this clear said the professor, once a person’s memory is damaged the drug will have no useful effect.

There are still opposing camps when it comes to Marijuana.

One thing that is not clear, in this research, is the amount that is beneficial and whether exceeding this amount - or using the drug habitually is still ‘good’ for the brain ?

    I guess everything in moderation.

Red wine is supposed to thin the blood, but 2 bottles a day is unikely to be beneficial ?

    http://JackHerer.com - General cannabis information
http://PhoenixTears.ca - Cannabis CURE FOR CANCER info.

What is clear is that the people are having important information withheld from them, for some unknown purpose…or so the majority believe.

Pharmaceutical companies can’t afford to let a natural and UNPATENTABLE PLANT remain available to people, as it will cut into their profits. As it is widely known, there are more people working on Cancer than actually have cancer, this would be a tremendous blow to the pharmaceutical industry’s profits…even though it would save lives, and save hundreds of billions of dollars worldwide in reduced health care expenses. The net gain of the public is not important enough to offset the net losses which the pharmaceutical industry would suffer with the loss of such a huge percentage of their market, and so, they fight it’s legalization.

The Forestry industry can not allow paper to be made fomr hemp, as it will stop the destruction of the forests of the world, eliminate clearcutting, and protect the environment. As hemp paper is acid efree, longer-lived, and higher quality than that made with wood pulp, the forestry and pulp and paper industries can not afford to take the chance of the losses in market share and profits, so they fight it’s legalization.

The Cotton industry can’t afford to give up even the tiniest bit of market share to a better fibre, which is more easily grown at any location on the planet. Since the world no longer remembers that the first jeans made by Levi Strauss were made of HEMP FIBRES and NOT cotton, the cotton industry will fight it’s legalization.

For a more specific example, take Monsanto corporation. They take genes out of ONE living organism which can not be patented, inject them (through various means) into another living organism (which can’t be patented) and form a third, generitically modified organism, which can THEN be patented.

Monsanto makes chemicals. Monsanto takes the unpatentable and makes it patentable. Monsanto makes it’s patented plants specifically to provide restance to their chemicals. Monsanto sells their genetically modified plants, chemicals and fertilizers to farmers regardless of the effects on the environment of the health of the farmers or the consumers they sell to.

Now what would Monsanto do if they suddenly had a plant which can be grown anywhere on the planet, without chemicals, without fertilizers, and without any negative effects on the environment and human health? They would INSTANTLY begin losing money, market share, and they would fight the legalization of cannabis. They would fight it with more ferocity than any other company, as a matter of fact, and they have done so, even suing their own contracted farmers while they grow Monsanto’s seeds under contract…and for what? For growing their seeds!!!

There are many things about the cannabis/hemp issue that have been kept from the public for decades, but it is time that the people were informed of the truth of the situation, and what the benefits would be to the legalization fo a plant which has never killed anyone via overdose in more than 10,000 years of cultivation and use worldwide.

Think about that for a second.

Not a single confirmed case of death by “cannabis overdose”, even though there was recently a documented case of acute water poisoning which killed a woman in the US. See the following link for more information:

    http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24791437-23289,00.html

Why is water–which has been proven to kill people in excessive amounts–not illegal, while cannabis–which has never been documented to have caused the death of a single person–illegal?

It’s time that people investigated the TRUTH for themselves.

Cannabis hemp for: Rope. Paper. Food. Fuel. Medicine. Cosmetics. Fibres and Textiles. Automotive components…and tens of thousands of other potential products, NOT including thse which our most capable scientists haven’t even dreamed up yet, based on cannabis hemp and a raw material!

When are people going to stop thinking “Well, it’s stupid, but it’s the law…” and start thinking “It’s the law, but it’s stupid!” When you take both those statements into context, they are not nearly as symmetrical as they appear.

Note: The above should have read that the water poisoning dewath occurred in the UK, not in the US…although I’m sure that this has happened on both sides of the pond.
