Antiwar Activisten winnen de Regeling van $2 Miljoen van de Stad van New York
Een groep van 52 lokale activisten kondigde vandaag een $2 miljoen regeling in hun proces tegen de Stad New-York aan. De activisten werden illegaal gearresteerd op 7 April, 2003 terwijl het protesteren tegen de oorlog van Irak voor de bureaus van een militaire contractant in uit het stadscentrum. De regeling in Kunstler et al v. De Stad van New York volgt het ontslag in 2003 van alle misdadige lasten die tegen deze individuen en vier dure jaren vertragingen door de Stad in het bespreken van een eind aan het burgerlijke proces worden gebracht.

De procureurs en de aanklagers namen van, echter nota, dat het besluit van de Stad om het geval te slepen uit deel van een lang en storend patroon uitmaakt waardoor het probeert aanklagers „verslijten“ om politieke schade, zelfs op reusachtige kosten van belastingsdollars en de middelen van de Stad te vermijden. „Mijn vraag, waarom is stuurde NYPD politie meer dan 100 in reltoestel, samen met voertuigen om de straat de stroom van het verkeer van het ochtend spoeduur, allen om een wettelijk, vreedzaam protest tegen te houden te onderbreken te blokkeren en, wanneer er zijn veel belangrijkere kwesties zij zouden kunnen nastreven? En, waarom zij ons voor het gerecht zo doggedly bestreden toen zij het wisten bewees het bewijsmateriaal dat wij zonder enige politieorden werden gearresteerd weg te gaan?“ gevraagde Ahmad Shirazi, een filmredacteur en een grootvader en één van de aanklagers in het geval.
Een Nypd- videoband van de demonstratie schildert een groep demonstratiesystemen af die langs sidewalk van de Straat van het Westen zesenvijftigste tussen 5de en 6de Wegen worden gevoerd - met ruime ruimte voor voetgangers - die zonder enige politiewaarschuwing of kans werden gearresteerd weg te gaan. The police arrested 94 people that day.
The arrests took place outside the offices of the Carlyle Group, an investment firm with ties to the Bush family and an extensive portfolio of holdings in the military-defense sector. The police tactics used that day became the model used by the NYPD during the 2004 Republican National Convention held in New York.
At that event, thousands of activists were illegally arrested, jailed and mistreated. Lawsuits related to the police conduct at the RNC are still winding their way through the courts. NYPD officials are now consulting with police departments in Denver and Minneapolis on their plans for the 2008 Democratic and Republican Conventions.
“We hope our victory helps convince the City to stop violating people’s rights as a matter of policy and stop wasting taxpayers’ money doing so,” said Sarah Kunstler, an attorney and filmmaker who is the daughter of the late William Kunstler, noted attorney and civil rights champion. Ms. Kunstler was acquitted after a trial of all criminal charges brought against her. “It should also serve as a reminder that Washington’s illegal war in Afghanistan and Iraq is also being fought at home – against its own citizens and in the name of war profiteers like Carlyle and Halliburton. We intend to continue our resistance until this stops.”
