US citizens injured in Kenya attack

The US State Department is closely following a mass shooting in a Nairobi, Kenya mall, a department official said on Saturday.

Marie Harf, the State Department deputy spokeswoman, said they have reports of US citizens being injured in the attack that has left dozens dead and even more injured. Nairobi™s police chief has said the attack by reportedly 10 gunmen was a terrorist act.

œWe condemn this senseless act of violence that has resulted in death and injury for many innocent men, women, and children. Our condolences go out to the families and friends of all victims,” Harf said in a statement. Harf also noted that the U.S. embassy in Kenya is helping local authorities and US citizens in response to the attack.

œWe have reports of American citizens injured in the attack, and the US embassy is actively reaching out to provide assistance. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment on American citizens at this time. The embassy is also in contact with local authorities and has offered assistance.”

The Westgate shopping mall is in a high-end Nairobi neighborhood often visited by expatriates.

The New York Times reported on Saturday that at least 30 people had been killed and more than 60 injured in the attack. The Hill
