‘Twin blasts kill 13 in N Iraq’

Iraqi civilians check the site of an explosion in Baghdad on August 28, 2013.

At least 13 people, mostly children, have been killed and 18 others, including a baby, wounded in twin bomb blasts hitting the northern Iraqi town of Tuz Khormato.

According to police officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Friday, the first attack took place on a road at the entrance to the town situated 170 kilometers (105 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad.

The second bomb went off as people were trying to help casualties of the first explosion, the officials added.

Fridayâ„¢s attacks were the latest in a seemingly unrelenting wave of violence pounding Iraq a decade after the US-led invasion.

On Wednesday, bombings across the Arab country, mostly in Shia districts of the capital Baghdad, claimed the lives of over 80 people.

According to the United Nations, a total of 1,057 Iraqis, including 928 civilians, were killed and another 2,326 were wounded in terrorist attacks throughout the country in July — the deadliest month in Iraq since 2008.

Iraqâ„¢s Interior Ministry has said that militants have launched an open war in Iraq and they want to push the Middle Eastern country into chaos.
