Senators slammed for military investment

A journalist and political commentator warns that US senators™ investment in country™s military complex is œdoing significant damage to the American economy” while adding that US military presence across the globe is placing a huge burden on taxpayers.

œThe United States is staggering under the cost of its military but a lot of people make money out of it,” said Edward Corrigan who is also an international lawyer in an interview with press TV.

œA large portion of senators and congressmen invest in the military complex … they make lots of money but it™s really terrible for the American economy and the American taxpayer because there is little or no benefit for them except that it protects power and helps secure scarce resources of oil and natural gas.”

He made the remarks as US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, in an annual international security forum known as the Manama Dialogue held in Bahrain™s capital city, outlined Washington™s policy to sell more missiles and other weapons systems to Arab countries in the Persian Gulf.

We “will place even more emphasis on building the capacity of our partners in order to complement our strong military presence in the region”, said the US defense secretary during the conference on Saturday.

œThey have built an entire political apparatus largely based on protection of a military strength,” said Corrigan.

Corrigan, also an expert on US and Middle East relations, said that in the long term it would be better for the United States and better for the Middle East and for the world if the Americans cut back their military forces and also their reliance upon their military.

The US has military bases in many countries around the world which imposes œa huge cost on American taxpayer and the American economy.”

œIt is actually wearing down and doing significant damage to the American economy and the lack of infrastructure and lack of investment in the country but that™s the route they have chosen,” he concluded.
