NI police find weapons in loyalist area

Northern Ireland police find haul of guns in loyalist area.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have found haul of guns and ammunition in loyalist area in capital city of Belfast.

The weapons, hid in National Trust property Lisnabreeny House in the Castlereagh area in east Belfast, were found by the PSNI during final weekend on marching season in the country.

The PSNI said the weapons were taken away for forensic examination.

There are reports that the munitions belong to the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) group, which are behind the violence connected to flag riots earlier in January.

Å“Lisnabreeny House is owned by the National Trust and is in an area where many people walk on a daily basis, and only a short distance from Lagan College,” said the Democratic Unionist assembly member Jimmy Spratt.

Moreover, he urged people to pass their information, if any, to the PSNI immediately.

Northern Ireland police are currently on high alert in preparation for the final days of marching season in Belfast.

Earlier last week, Loyalists and republicans were involved in hand-to-hand clashes outside Crumlin Road jail in North Belfast after a group of loyalists moved down on the former prison for a protest and republicans arrived for an event inside the building.
