Kashmir deaths intensify Indo-Pak row

Tensions have heightened between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan with New Delhi accusing Pakistanâ„¢s army of involvement in the killing of its soldiers in the disputed Kashmir, Press TV reports.

Five Indian soldiers were killed on Tuesday after their border patrol convoy was ambushed in Poonch area of the Indian-administered Kashmir.

The Indian government has accused Pakistani troops of attacking the Indian convoy. Islamabad, however, denied the allegations as baseless.

Peace talks between the two neighbors were suspended in 2008 after a terrorist attack on the Indian city of Mumbai killed 166 people and injured more than 600 others.

Pakistanâ„¢s new Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has shown willingness to resume the talks. Indiaâ„¢s new Foreign Secretary Sujata Singh said a few days ago that New Delhi was getting prepared to participate in the talks.

But the recent incident is likely to affect any such process.

On Wednesday, two Pakistani troops were injured in an exchange of fire with Indian soldiers in Kashmir.

Kashmir is disputed since India and Pakistan gained independence from Britain in 1947. Since then, India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over Kashmir.

Both neighbors claim the region in full but have partial control over it.

Thousands of people have been killed in Kashmir over the past 20 years.
