Demonstrators in Pakistanâ„¢s capital of Islamabad have held a rally to protest against US assassination drone attacks in the countryâ„¢s troubled northwestern tribal region, Press TV reports.
The protesters gathered outside Pakistanâ„¢s parliament and chanted anti-US slogans to condemn Washingtonâ„¢s policy of strikes in the countryâ„¢s tribal belt.
They also urged the Pakistani government to take practical steps against the illegal US drone strikes in the country.
The protest was organized by Pakistani religious parties, which believe that the US assassination drone campaign in the tribal areas violates the Asian countryâ„¢s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Å“The United States is committing great human rights violation in the tribal areas. Drone attacks are against the international laws and we have come here to see [an] immediate end to such attacks,” said one of the protesters.
On Thursday, at least six people were killed in a US drone attack in a residential area in Ghulam Khan town in North Waziristan tribal district along the Afghan border.
Pakistanâ„¢s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday issued a statement strongly condemning the latest deadly US drone strike.
However, the furious demonstrators in Islamabad said that the mere condemnation of the assault was not enough.
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recently slammed the aerial assaults in his country, describing them as a violation of the international law and the UN Charter.
Washington claims its drone strikes target militants; however, casualty figures show that Pakistani civilians are often the victims of the non-UN-sanctioned attacks.
The United States often uses its assassination drones to hit targets in Pakistan and some other countries including Yemen and Afghanistan.
Obama recently defended the use of the controversial drones as Å“self-defense.”
The UN says the US-operated drone strikes in Pakistan pose a growing challenge to the international rule of law.
