Iran think thank slams US sanctions

The head of an Iranian think thank has censured Washingtonâ„¢s Å“cruel sanctions” against Iran, calling on the US Treasury to adopt a logical approach towards Tehran.

In a letter to US Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen, Chairman of Middle East Commercial and Economic Research and Studies Center Hossein Sadr said the US-led Å“cruel sanctions” against Iran blatantly run counter to human dignity and divine teachings.

Sadr pointed to the US long-standing hostile policies against Iran and noted that such arrogant approaches have become nonsensical against the backdrop of changing global equations.

On July 31, the US House of Representatives approved a new sanction bill against Iran aimed at imposing tougher bans on Tehranâ„¢s oil exports and financial sector.

The bill, which must be approved by the Senate and signed by President Barack Obama to become law, seeks to cut Iran’s oil exports by one million barrels per day over a year.

The US has imposed several rounds of illegal sanctions on Iran, which Washington claims to be aimed at pressuring Tehran to abandon its nuclear energy program.

The US, Israel and some of their allies falsely claim that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with Washington and the European Union using the unfounded allegation as a pretext to impose illegal sanctions on Iran.

Tehran has categorically rejected West’s accusation, arguing that as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a committed member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
