‘Indian troops kill Kashmiri girl’

Indian soldiers take position at a military camp in Gurez, some 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Srinagar, on August 20, 2011.

A 10-year old Pakistani girl has been killed and her mother wounded in a cross-border firing from the Indian troops in the disputed Kashmir region, officials say.

The incident took place on Wednesday in Battal area of Rawlakot District near the the Line of Control (LoC) — the de facto border that divides Kashmir between Pakistan and India.

“Indian troops resorted to small arms and artillery fire in Battal area, killing a 10-year old girl and wounding her mother,” AFP quoted a senior Pakistani security official as saying on condition of anonymity.

He said the incident sparked fire exchange between the border soldiers of the two rivals.

On Tuesday, a 65-year old woman was wounded after Indian troops opened fire on a small village in the town of Kotli along the LoC.

Last week, Pakistan said that two Indian fighter jets violated its airspace in Punjab Province and flew over the Pakistani territory for two minutes.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 65 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both countries claim the region in full but each only has control over a section of the territory.

Over the past two decades, the conflict in Kashmir has left over 47,000 people dead by the official count, although other sources say the death toll could be as high as 100,000.
