I will go if I lose vote: Zimbabwe pres.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says he will step down if he loses the countryâ„¢s upcoming presidential election.

Mugabe said at a press conference in the capital Harare on Tuesday that he had buried the hatchet with Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, his rival in the Wednesday election.

Å“If you go into a process and join in a competition where there are only two outcomes, a win or a loss, you canâ„¢t revolt. You either win or lose. If you lose you must surrender to those who won,” said the Zimbabwean president, adding, “We have done no cheating, never, ever.”

Mugabe, 89, has been the African countryâ„¢s leader for 33 years and will face the 61-year-old Tsvangirai for the third time when the polls open at 7:00 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said the party would accept the election results only if the poll is “free and fair.”

Both sides have predicted landslide victories despite widespread allegations of irregularities ahead of the polls.
