Gunmen have abducted the 80-year-old father of Syriaâ„¢s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad in the countryâ„¢s southern province of Daraâ„¢a.
The office of the Syrian deputy foreign minister confirmed that the kidnapping was carried out in the village of Ghossom on May 18.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the kidnapping. However, the foreign-backed militants in Syria have targeted the families of Syrian officials over the past months of turmoil in the country.
Unrest erupted in Syria over two years ago. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
The Syrian government says that the chaos in the country is being orchestrated from outside, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
In addition, several international human rights organizations say the militants have committed war crimes in Syria.
